SCOTT MILLER / LEE CAMFIELD / MERZBOW | No Closure CD (CSR185CD) £8

Shipping: 30th September
"No Closure" is the collaborative output of ex-Sutekh Hexen members Scott Miller and Lee Camfield, with Japanese noise mastermind, Masami Akita. Mixing elements of psychedelia, black metal, doom and industrial, the musicians created a spellbinding work of experimental art. Conceptually crafted in a dark basement recording studio in the Mission District of San Francisco and later fleshed out in Tokyo, Japan, Miller, Camfield and Akita have completely pushed the boundaries of sound far beyond their individual comfort zones. Purposely devoid of their usual feedback drenched and oscillator projections, they left the inevitable incorporation of varied sound manipulation and textures strictly to Akita, thus giving birth to this two track, 44 minute long masterpiece of epic mind warping experimental composition.

A colllection of rare / deleted tracks from compilations Vol. II (1999-2002). ABSURD THULE - '00 AntiMusic' CD (Nihil Art) - £10.50

The second album of this project from Moscow. Excellent industrial / dark ambient combining retrospective, abstract and nihilistic philosophy. For fans of Industrial Ambient in the "Swedish tradition", mixing Dark Ambient soundscapes with slow processed beats. By the sounds of your dark thoughts will find new shapes and will open a new face. Over 76 minutes of music. Ltd x 500 copies.

ACTUARY - 'The Reality Is, The Dream Is Dead' CD (Crucial Blast) - £11

Since forming late in the latter half of the past decade, the California-based extreme noise outfit Actuary has shared releases with Merzbow, Bastard Noise, Aderlating, Winters In Osaka and more. On their first full-length CD, Actuary presents four new tracks of intense noise that covers all of the different aspects of their sound. The malevolent, psychedelic electronics that Actuary exudes takes the sort of brutal cyborg chaos found in the likes of Bastard Noise and Government Alpha, and drenches it in a heavy coating of dextromethorphan delirium, making for some of their heaviest noise so far. Ltd x 200 hand-numbered copies in a DVD case with 32-page art zine filled with strange, surrealistic artwork from members of the band as well as contributions from FetusK, Mories (Gnaw Their Tongues), Chris Dodge (Spazz), Jay Randall (Agoraphobic Nosebleed) and more.

ALTAR OF PLAGUES - 'Tides' MCD (Burning World Records) - £10

Blending the suffocating blasts of black metal with post-metal atmospherics, Irish quartet Altar of Plagues expand some already extreme genres into new territories. The band strikes a fine balance between the two genres, adding quieter, more open moments to its songs to break up the smothering assaults of blastbeats and brittle guitars. "Tides" is comprised of two epic tracks; 'Atlantic Light' (15:45) and 'The Weight of All' (19:45). Inspiration was drawn almost entirely from the power and energy of the Atlantic Ocean. "The product is what we believe to be our 'darkest' material. Perhaps this may also be attributed to it being the first material we have written and recorded in winter (and a particularly harsh one)." The EP was mixed by Mell Dettmer (Sunn o))), Wolves in the Throne Room fame). Comes in a digipak.

BRUME - 'Xerxès' LP (Rotorelief) - £18

Xerxes was the King of Persia in 500 B.C. and could be considered as a symbol of aggression, of invasion and let's say of penetration by all meanings of the word. Invasion implies an obvious sexual connotation. This sonorous material bearing the same name tries to concretise this notion of ultra-violent aggression inherent to all periods of Humanity, including war. Barbarity combined to technology, to death organisation, but also to the first high-tech propaganda embryos. Today all systems, thanks to new techniques of "information", keep bombarding and formatting the masses with high-flying high-tech systems suitable to their ideals. One can deduce that today Humanity hasn't changed one iota since the dawn of time... technology being only crutches and prosthesis. Ltd x 333 copies.

DARK AGES - 'Rabble, Whores, Usurers' CD (Elegy Records) - £11

Brand new album from the frontman of Ukrainian acts Hate Forest / Drudkh. The final chapter of this dark symphony has reached the land of the living. Seven tracks of dark ambient depression and sin that shall fill your psyche with utter depravity. The whores and rats are upon you!

EIBON - 'II' LP (Aesthetic Death Records) - £12

Eibon is a 5 piece act featuring Stephane Riviere (Drowning, Garden Of Silence), Georges Balafas, Jerome Lachaud (Garden Of Silence, Astral Rising), Max Hedin, and Guillaume Taliercio. An awesome display of progressive dark doom - in the true Eibon sound - this release was recorded live and charts the progress of the band through turbulent times. The old sentiment of "what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger" - couldn't be more appropriate. Recording this material live gave the music a very organic and fluid feel - deep and considered compositions ensure these two epic tracks keep the listener on edge throughout.

FABIO ORSI - 'Endless Autumn' CD (Backwards) - £11

Each new album by Fabio Orsi is an experience apart. The atmospheres created by the Apulian artist, who lives in Berlin, penetrate the smallest gaps of the cerebral cortex, just where the memory lives. "Endless Autumn" is a work that draws inspiration in its title from "Endless Summer", by Christian Fennesz, but shines with its own light. Recorded between Taranto and Berlin, it embodies the environmental sounds that come from Puglia and German capital. Orsi captures the essence of the landscapes that he loves to observe, letting the listener fly with his mind over Apulian sunny coasts and countryside, up to German lush forests. The sounds come together naturally with melancholic and slight electronic textures and guitar melodies. Ltd x 1000 copies in a digipak.

FACTRIX / CONTROL UNIT - 'Elegy For Rusted Souls' LP & 7" (Backwards) - £16

San Francisco industrial pioneers Factrix are back with a new studio album, recorded together with Italian duo Control Unit. The quartet formed by Bond Bergland, Cole Palme, Silvia Kastel and Ninni Morgia moulds a new language of industrial music with guitars, bass and electronics, resulting in a fusion of acoustic and electric elements, primitive rhythms patterns and even blues. On top sits the ghostly, sexy, no-waveish voice of Silvia Kastel. Fans of classic industrial music, Throbbing Gristle, post punk, Confusion Is Sex-era Sonic Youth will feel at home with this album, but it will also satisfy those who love the most extreme avantgarde experiments in music. Cover artwork by Karen Constance (Blood Stereo). Ltd x 500 copies with insert. Includes a bonus 7" with 3 extra tracks.

GODFLESH - 'Streetcleaner: Live At Roadburn 2011' 2 x LP (Roadburn Records) - £20

This double LP captures Birmingham's post-punk / industrial behemoths during their stunning performance of this seminal album in full, including the "Tiny Tears" EP, which was conceived as part of the overall "Streetcleaner" vision. Godflesh are one of the biggest influences on the burgeoning doom, sludge and drone scenes. "Streetcleaner" creates an all-encompassing yet devastatingly claustrophobic vision from minimalist means. The guitar textures that would later be siphoned off into Justin Broadrick’s and Benny Green’s respective drone projects, Final and Vitriol. Meet the abyss head-on! GULAGGH - 'Vorkuta' CD (Crucial Blast) - £11

First released by New Era Productions (2009), Crucial Blast give this demonic, disturbing album a welcome CD reissue. From the ashes of Stalaggh begins the Gulaggh trilogy. A soulripping piece of audio terror. The most disturbing piece so far by these musical avant-garders. This time they used mostly classical instruments (violins, trumpets, saxophones etc). For vocals they used more mental patients than ever before, including over 30 screaming children from a Youth Mental Hospital! Black digipak with silver print.

LUSTMORD - 'Zoetrope' 2 x LP (Burning World Records) - £18

"Zoetrope" (1999) is an experimental avant-garde short film by music-video director Charlie Deaux. It presents a haunting, apocalyptic story of man’s metaphysical existence. Inspired by Franz Kafka’s story "In the Penal Colony", the film is an attempt to transfer Kafka's dark, nightmarish vision and gloomy atmosphere to celluloid. Shot on 35mm film on extremely smooth black-and-white stock, the film features dark and surreal visuals. This 18-minute work features a dark ambient soundscape by musician and sound designer Lustmord and was originally released on DVD in 2005 by Soleilmoon Recordings. This beautiful vinyl reissue features the never before released track 'The Abhorrent Apparatus' and is presented in a sumptuous gatefold sleeve.

MIRT - 'Heading South' LP (Backwards) - £13

"Heading South" is the eighth album from Poland's Mirt. Like its predecessors it is to some extent a concept album. This time, derived from exotic vision of B-movies and cheap comic stories. As usual this inspirations are barely visible and immersed in Mirt's typical hazy and dark mood. This are only some hints and whole album leaves a much wider scope for interpretation. Ltd x 200 copies on black vinyl.

MORS SONAT - 'Comforts In Atrocity' CD (Crucial Blast) - £11

Those who explore the more terrifying sounds found at the intersection where black metal, industrial noise, power electronics and black ambience meet surely know the minds behind this collaboration. Featuring Mories (of Gnaw Their Tongues / Aderlating / Cloak Of Altering / De Magia Veterum infamy) and Australian black noise/metal technician Nekrasov, Mors Sonat sounds little like their other projects, crafting a cold, hallucinatory strain of aural dread that draws from a strange mixture of twilight chamber music, ghastly death industrial sounds, harsh electronic noise and gleaming dark ambient, while tapping into the sort of psychic unease and violent chaos that will be familiar to fans of their previous efforts. Fans of the shambling chthonic evil of Mories' other projects and Nekrasov's black-hole visions will find some of these elements in Mors Sonat's sound, but it's tempered by the use of haunting chamber strings, ritualistic ambience and experimental electronics, diffused into a kind of grim otherworldly soundscape all its own. Recommended to fans of everything from Funerary Call and Nordvargr's blackened electronics, Shinjuku Thief's 'Witch Trilogy', and Cold Meat-style death industrial. Six-panel digipak.

PHILIP CORNER - 'Battutosso / Bone Pulse (And Other Nature Musics)' LP
(Backwards / Ricerca Sonora) - £13

Philip Corner's "Battutosso / Bone Pulse" vinyl features recordings from 1989-97 of the US composer experimenting with bones: "the 100 most beautiful cows' bells", "breath, flute, and rubbing rock", and "Geoff Hendricks' xylophone sculpture". Compelling stuff, as always with Corner's work. Mastered by Silvia Kastel (Control Unit). Ltd x 300 copies.

ROTORVATOR - 'I Vivi E I Morti' CD (Crucial Blast) - £11

The debut album from Italian void-gazers Rotorvator, a seven-song blast of blackened electronics, pounding industrial rhythms, deformed black metal and punishing abstract noise. The disturbed apocalyptic electronics and blackened violence of Rotorvator's music is altogether too demented to simply be described as another industrial black metal outfit, drawing heavily from a mixture of industrial/electronic sounds to produce something more aligned with the Black Metal side of cult Swedish black industrialists MZ. 412 and the malformed likes of Ivs Primae Noctis, Murmuüre, Gnaw Their Tongues and Utarm. Ltd x 400 and-numbered copies in a DVD case, with a set of ten warped collage pieces created by the band, bound together in a black obi.

ULVER - 'Live At Roadburn' CD (Roadburn Records) - £11

Early pioneers of Norwegian black metal Ulver have continually evolved over the years to become living legends of the dark music genre. By blending rock, electronic, industrial and symphonic traditions along with ambient soundscapes and experimental sounds, the band has created truly groundbreaking material. Ulver returned with "Childhood’s End", a collection of classic psychedelic tracks recorded by the band during various sessions 2008-2011. This passion for Sixties garage rock and psychedelia and the countless underground gems that remain unknown to many inspired the band to record their own interpretations of some of their favorite songs from the era. Ulver performed the tracks from "Childhood’s End" for the first and only time live at Roadburn 2012. Ltd x 1000 copies in a 6-panel digisleeve with bronze print.

VIVENZA - 'Modes Réels Collectifs' CD (Rotorelief) - £14

"Modes Réels Collectifs", remastered and presented on CD, is the first work published in 1981 under the unique banner Vivenza. It must be seen as a kind of genuine "Manifesto" that then became emblematic of all his work. Vivenza was then presenting to us what he brought from his relationship with machines and with the sound of the factories, to make us penetrate the brutal concrete of the heavy industry world. This album, by virtue of its initial founder characteristic from 1981, shows this concern about participating to the interaction of the energy of the future, to the reciprocal mediation linked to the productive activity of the world. "...the machine is indeed the richest symbol of the mysterious human creator strength". Ltd x 1000 copies in a 6-panel digipak.

VIVENZA - 'Réalité De L'Automation Directe' CD (Rotorelief) - £14

Bruitism is the representation of a living, biological body, not unrelated but on the contrary intimate to the substance. The nature/technique gap is totally, in The Art of Noises, the most accomplished form of a reconciliation with industrial mechanization. By highlighting the autonomy of the dialectical movement in its inaugural tension, Bruitism reestablishes this relationship with the pure objectivity of the substance, which is the cornerstone of the program of futurism and remains more than ever valid for the future of all futures. The sonorous world, the noises of life, are not just a simple residual environment but the material of a new art, The Art of Noises. "In a few years the engines of our industrial cities can all be skilfully sounded so as to make from each factory an exhilarating orchestra of noises". The futurist objective is "a will for a back to original forces", it finds in Bruitism the most intense form of a participation to the universal energy of the being of the world. VIVENZA - 'Veriti Plastici' CD (Rotorelief) - £14

"Veriti Plastici", the third work of Vivenza, recorded in 1983, represents a fundamental step in the definitive formalisation of the Bruitist sonorous view. Made of very objective industrial atmospheres, this recording will be the bridge between the pure experimental approach, and the rigorous structuring of the works that would be produced later (Fondements Bruitistes - 1984, Réalités Servomécaniques - 1985, Machines - 1985, etc.). The attentive examination of Bruitism on each machine generating a noise-sound, reveals an organic vision of the industrial and urban network : "the large and fabulous breathing of a sleeping town is so strange, wonderful, fascinating... a breathing only interrupted now and then by the whistle of a train; a breathing which is the result of all different industries (electric power stations, gas factories, train stations, printings, etc.) continuing their activities in the quiet nightlife". 6-panel digipak.

YEAR OF NO LIGHT - 'Live At Roadburn 2008' CD (Roadburn Records) - £11

Two years after the vinyl version, and three years after the gig actually took place, Roadburn Records presents Year Of No Light "Live at Roadburn 2008" on CD. Hailing from Bordeaux, YONL have proven adept at shifting seamlessly between genres, balancing postrock, sludge, sombre psychedelics and crushing dark and depressing atmospheric shoegaze. Recorded at the 13th edition of the world famous Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Netherlands. For the last song the band was joined on stage by Fear Falls Burning for 20 minutes of doom/drone mayhem. Comes in a digipak with layout by Mories (Gnaw Their Tongues, Aderlating, Cloak Of Altering, De Matia Veterum).

YRSEL - 'Abraxas' CD (213 Records) - £11

"Abraxas" contains some of the bands most challenging and yet accessible music so far. This album is conceived as an annual cycle, a support in four phases for meditation. The union of the polarities is expressed through Abraxas. Light and darkness, creation and destruction, fire and ice, right and left; all such opposites are united in Abraxas, who is both God and Evil in one. The origins of Abraxas are uncertain. But this symbol is deeply rooted in the Gnostic thought. Basilidians heretics saw a solar divinity in It. An emanation, immanent in every being.  It became the seal of the Templars and is now an amulet having its meaning lost in ancient days. Features guests: Denis Del Nista (Moon), and Alice Dourlen (Chicaloyoh). Ltd x 200 copies in a gatefold recycled card silkscreened digisleeve.

ZINC ROOM - 'Shifting Soil' CD (Evil Dead Productions) - £10.50

The new album from the Urals project, recorded with the participation of musicians from Scratching Soil / Thy Repentance. Past experiments with raw Industrial percussion has been left behind, giving way to a most tranquil and ritualistic mood. Synthesizers, bass, various percussion techniques, writing objects (sand), and the macabre are spliced into a type of theater, a play with an infernal end. A work in the spirit of SPK, Morthound, In Slaughter Natives. A very promising project.

LUSTMORD - 'The Monstrous Soul' 2 x LP (Burning World Records) - £18

A classic, much revered album, "The Monstrous Soul" was conceived in Sheffield in 1990 by Lustmord (aka Brian Williams) and Clock DVA founder Adi Newton. A deliberately minimal recording. An hour long soundscape best described as a journey through a frozen hell. The five songs contained revel in a sort of restrained melodrama, packed with horror movie samples and apocalyptic tensions. Another essential release by the unrivalled Lord of Ritual Dark Ambient! Stunning black vinyl reissue in a luxurious gatefold sleeve.

MACHINEFABRIEK - 'Marijn' LP (Burning World Records) - £11

Six tracks of post-industrial ambience. Through the use of both acoustic and electronic instrumentation, Machinefabriek uses the recognisable as a template, building upon the sounds by treating them electronically and rendering them more often than not as eerily alien soundscapes. Zuydervelt works with live instruments, mostly piano and guitar, and intense computer processing to create gloomy instrumentals. The tracks develop very slowly and he takes all the time in the world to push them to the level of density his music requires. "Marijn" is an exceptional release that will be music to the ears of anyone who can appreciate needle noise as one of life's simple pleasures. A very dense and satisfying album. Ltd x 100 copies on white vinyl.
