CLARA ROCKMORE - 'Theremin' LP (Fantôme Phonographique) - £27

Lithuanian-born violin prodigy Clara Rockmore became the best-known master of the electronic theremin after emigrating to the USA, her uncommon approach enabling its integration in the classical milieu even as she refined its construction. This landmark debut surfaced in 1977, when she was already 66. Produced by synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog and featuring her sister Nadia on accompanying piano, "Theremin" (aka The Art Of The Theremin) showed all the majesty and grace of Rockmore's approach to the Theremin, her classical grounding and virtuosity enabling an emotive response from the instrument, with uncommon nuances of pitch, tone, and cadence. This one-off masterpiece is a musical gem ripe for rediscovery, a must for all fans of the theremin and anyone interested in the nexus of the classical and electronic forms. ESOTERIC - 'Metamorphogenesis' 2 x LP (Aesthetic Death) - £28

First time on vinyl for the third full-length album from UK Funeral Doom legends Esoteric. A superbly crafted study of dark, ominous and glacial-paced doom. Subtle, complex, psychotropic, otherworldly, deep and emotive. The original recording was hampered by (in the band's words) "a chaotic and hugely oppressive sound". This has been greatly improved upon and the multi-layered sound is much clearer in definition, much more in line with what Esoteric originally intended. Though still crushing, heavy and impenetrably dense, there are subtle complexities that can be now finally be heard. Beautifully layered chaos and a well crafted depth belies a dark, ominous and monstrous doom. Originally released in 1999 by Eibon Records, now completely remixed and re-mastered for vinyl by Greg Chandler. GAAHLS WYRD - 'GastiR - Ghosts Invited' CD (Season Of Mist) - £14

A full-strength assault of pure Norwegian Black Metal malevolence and majesty, fronted by legendary vocalist, frontman, artist and composer Gaahl (GORGOROTH, WARDRUNA, GOD SEED, TRELLDOM). Under the moniker Gaahls WYRD, he has assembled some of Norway's finest metal musicians: Ole Walaunet (The Batallion, God Seed, Grimfist), Frode Kilvik (Krakow, Aeternus), and Kevin Kvåle (Horizon Ablaze). Borne out of a project honoring Gaah's musical legacy, Gaahls WYRD continues on the left hand path that has defined his music for 25 years. HALLOWED BUTCHERY - 'Deathsongs From The Hymnal Of The Church Of The Final Pilgrimage' CD (Aesthetic Death) - £10.50

Reissue of Hallowed Butchery's 2020 album (Ltd 50 copies on self-released cassette). "Deathsongs" interweaves funeral doom with industrial, neofolk, and synthesizers. "This album is dedicated to the Church of the Final Pilgrimage - an obscure death-worshipping cult located in rural Maine. In 2017 I lived within the church's compound. These songs are influenced by my experiences there and by the teachings of the church's founder: Jonathan M. Curless... Unlike most sects, the members of the group do not worship a deity but rather they devote their lives to the worship of death. Death is their god. Death is the one true reality". Remastered by Greg Chandler (Esoteric). Recommended to fans of: Esoteric, Mournful Congregation, Current 93, Godflesh, and Swans. HEILUNG - 'Futha' CD (Season Of Mist) - £14

Heilung means "healing" in the German language and this also describes the core of the band's sound. The listener should be left at ease and in a relaxed state after a magical musical journey that is at times turbulent. Sounds from the northern European iron age and viking period, using running water, human bones, reconstructed swords and shields up to ancient frame drums and bronze rings in the songs. The lyrics contain original texts from rune stones and preserved spear shafts, amulets and other artifacts. Furthermore poems, which either deal with historical events or are translations / interpretations of the originals. Heilung tries to connect the listener to the time before Christianity. "Futha" was three years in the making and was finished at midwinter, the very darkest day of the solar year. At the opposite to "Ofnir", "Futha" is the counterpart, the balance point, the feminine side. Here, the lyrics originate from old Icelandic poetry. Hence, female voices are more prominent on "Futha". HENK BADINGS / DICK RAAIJMAKERS - 'Evolutions, Contrasts & Electronic Music' LP (Aurora Rising) - £16

This is the reissue of a 1958 album by Dutch composers, arrangers, conductors and pioneers in the field of experimental electronic music: Henk Badings and Dick Raajmakers (aka Kid Baltan). They created electronic soundscapes with oscillators, noise-generators, modulators, circuits, and concrete sound sources, with a rather creepy atmosphere, quite different to the '50s avant-garde classics and the more pop-oriented electronic albums of the same period. The first side can be seen as a strange dialogue with sloping melodies between the violin and unidentifiable electronic devices that gives you goosebumps. It has a rather picturesque approach and could be used for early horror films as accompanying music for the horrifying scenes. The flip side was composed using the entire apparatus of the studio of Philips physics laboratory at Eindhoven. This music still sounds fresh and exciting even nearly six decades after its initial release. Reissued and including five bonus tracks, this is definitely an album for true enthusiasts of strange electronic sounds.

KADAVER / LISTING - 'Kadaver / Listing' CD (Aesthetic Death) - £10.50

Ugly Harsh Noise / Power Electronics / Death Industrial with avant-garde nightmare soundscapes. MISS NELSON & BRUCE HAACK - 'Dance Sing And Listen' CD (Aurora Rising) - £10.50

A curiosity of vintage experimental electronics from 1963, conceived as educational, open-minded children's music. The sound is a mash up of story-telling for kids and sing-along music mixed with tons of electronic effects and rhythmic invention, making it an utterly spacey affair. This reissue makes sure the cult album can be enjoyed by people crazy for early '60s electronic music. Let go of all chains and float away with the tape looped rhythms and all the hissing and buzzing and chirping upon which Esther Nelson, a children's dance teacher, and Bruce Haack, a composer and pioneer of electronic music, recite poems, give dance instructions or play melodies on primitive synthesizers. "Dance Sing And Listen" is meant to fire the imagination of children and due to its musical quality and weird mood, it may do the same with adults. From this pioneering piece came the sound bands like Kraftwerk and Neu! would head for around a decade later.

A new album from U.S. old school death industrial / dark ambient project MURDEROUS VISION (Stephen Petrus), with guest appearances from Kristoffer Oustad (Stromstad, V:28) and Pauline Lombardo (C**ting Daughters). The monumental work "Elemental Flame" lauds fire as the force which destroys the

obsolete and creates new life in its place. "Fire is a guide between the Earth and the Sky - its flames roar, devour, incinerate and purify. The sounds of the flame awaken fear and hope in the soul, inspire and drive away. Raising its tongues up like hands, the fire prays for human sins and points out the only right way...". ORD - 'Comprehension & Gaining' 2 x CD (Status Prod.) - £23

The new album of the Voronezh ritual / dark ambient project ORD was recorded as a meditative-trance album with pronounced tribal elements. "When evil and violence fill the world, when people fall into barbarism and forget about virtue, spiritual degradation occurs - the era of Kali-yuga comes. Realizing the inevitability of the end and the subsequent beginning, a person finds peace". The tracks on "Comprehension & Gaining" are united

by a common meaning. The four compositions of the 1st disc (totalling 58 mins) turn to the memories of all four epochs (yugas) in the descending Hindu time cycle and lead to the realization of being in the age of Kali-yuga, which will be followed by the end as the acquisition of a new life. The single 58-minute composition of the 2nd disc plunges into the depths of the own mind, embodying the absolute that inevitably follows the completion. OTTO LUENING / VLADIMIR USSACHEVSKY / WILLIAM BERGSMA - 'A Poem In Cycles And Bells & Other Music For Tape Recorder' LP (Aurora Rising) - £16

This compilation of electronic tape music and orchestral compositions saw the light of the stars for the first time in 1957 and has become a cult piece among lovers of electronic space music since. The long out of print gem from three masterminds is one of the important steps towards any kind of electronic music that followed. On the A-side, Luening & Ussachevsky's work with sounds of undefined origin recorded on tape reels which are their main instruments. The result is deliberately dark, gloomy and full of terror. It pulls you away from your earthly existence and drags you out into space to the furthest corners of the cosmos. Of note, their "Suite From King Lear" was commissioned by Orson Welles to provide an abstract background score for his New York City Center production of Shakespeare's King Lear. This is pre-Kraut music for lovers of spaced out sounds from the days before the synthesizer, on a par with legendary cosmic music from the likes of Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk / Organisation and Kluster. The B-side features Bergsma working with a real orchestra - you certainly have to lay back and let yourself drift away upon this stream of sound but it is still a very human effort all in all. Even though this piece of music moves within the narrow borderlines of classic orchestral music patterns, there is a warm and gentle flow of energy pouring out of it and reaching out for your mind.

REGEN GRAVES - 'Climax' CD (Yoshiwara Collective / Pariah Child) - £11

This is the eerie and cinematic fourth full-length album by esteemed Italian artist Regen Graves, aka Antonio Polidori (Abysmal Grief, Tony Tears). Whilst previous offerings focused on Polish and Eastern German themes, this album explores an alternative milieu inspired by Hungarian visionary, Béla Tarr. Disconcerting dark ambient synths, space/krautrock stylings, sampled sounds, rhythms and narrations are woven into a distinctly engaging body of work. "electronic and very much in the vein of that cold-war vibe essentially. This harks back to the radiophonic days of sound manipulation and signals that are not quite of this earth being beamed to and from it to orbiting stations... an incredibly effective listening experience and one that is likely to linger in the memory and come back and haunt" (Ave Noctum). SEPPUKU PARADIGM - 'Martyrs O.S.T.' LP (The Omega Productions Records) - £28

The final edition of the soundtrack of the film Martyrs (2008) on physical format for the first time. Composed by the French duo Seppuku Paradigm (Alex and Willie Cortés). Directed in 2008 by Pascal Laugier, Martyrs is undoubtedly one of the most controversial French horror films ever made. Beyond the symbolism of its purpose or the hyperrealism of its special effects, the footage is only the representation of a love between two friends, within an increasingly dehumanized society. The music composed by the Cortés brothers results from the vision of its director; sometimes cold and austere, sometimes organic and even melancholy. Thought more by its creators as a concept album rather than a simple sound illustration, the soundtrack ends with the famous title 'Your Witness', with pop-Floydian accents. The song 'My Neighborhood' by composer Goldmund is also present for the first time. Resulting from a close collaboration for over a year between brothers Cortés, Goldmund and The Omega Productions Records, this edition contains the entire score on vinyl 150gr, a minimalist design created by Grégory Lê and internal notes returning to the process of creating the album by Willie Cortés. The gatefold sleeve contains a mark in real chrome derived from the cold aesthetic imagined by Pascal Laugier. Collector's edition strictly limited to 1000 copies, with chrome foilblock finish.

SÓLSTAFIR - 'Endless Twilight Of Codependent Love' CD (Season Of Mist) - £14

One does not need to speak Sólstafir's Icelandic tongue to understand the spectrum of raw emotion evoked by every song. With its incredible array of highly diverse landscapes ranging from white glaciers via volcanoes, moss-green bubble-fields, deep fjords, and frost-cracked mountains to black beaches, Iceland has shaped a host of the astonishingly original in Sólstafir. Their new opus highlights the contrasting influences that have inspired the band over the years, blending elements of the post (black) metal, post-rock, elegant ethereal melodies and unbridled passion upon which they've built their career. Much like the vast expanse of their homeland, the band once again embodies the ever-turning wheel of the four seasons with their shifting light and darkness. SÓLSTAFIR - 'Berdreyminn' CD (Season Of Mist) - £12

Sólstafir are not like any other band. Their sixth album "Berdreyminn" underscores this statement. As its title "a dreamer of forthcoming events" aptly describes, the four Icelanders have taken their already impressive evolution one step further. The band has continued to amalgamate haunting melodies, psychedelic phases, as well as strong undercurrents of post-rock with echoes of their metal past. HLADNA & ORD - 'Tunottauan' CD (Status Prod.) - £11

When the connection between the Earth and the Cosmos is established, the balance is restored, the merging of reality and subtle worlds occurs, the image of Tunnotauan appears, the symbol of duality, polarity, harmony of the universe. A collaborative album of Russian projects Hladna and Ord, recorded during a private session on 28 July 2017. The ritual ethno-industrial noises and singing of Tibetan bowls, the tinkling of the bells and the clatter of the shaman's tambourine, merge into a single sound canvas, enveloping the whole, leaving the depths of the subconscious and causing unknown hitherto images. The two-headed God Tunottauan came to Koloyar, the leader of project Hladna, during the deep immersion into the subtle worlds, his image was reconstituted from memory and used in the design of the album. 70 minutes. ORD - 'Avalokitesvara' CD (Status Prod.) - £11

A shamanic album / ritual presentation of Voronezh ritual / dark ambient project ORD. Avalokitesvara-bodhisattva is the embodiment of infinite compassion of all Buddhas. The Dalai Lama is considered his incarnation and regularly conducts Avalokiteshvara initiations. The material was recorded on 06.07.2019, the Dalai Lamas Birthday, at a private session at the Yunost music center, and was finalised with field recordings and modular synthesizers in the winter of 2019/2020. As a result, there were five compositions united by a common meaning, a meditative-trance sound, opening new facets of sound shamanism.
