ARTIFICIAL MEMORY TRACE / GERALD FIEBIG / EMERGE / PBK - 'Fiction Circuit' LP (Attenuation Circuit) - £15

Artificial Memory Trace aka Slavek Kwi and PBK aka Phillip B. Klingler have been pillars of the global DIY experimental music culture for decades. Here, they team up with EMERGE and his colleague Gerald Fiebig. Each one of the four artists contributes one track of about 10 minutes to the album. However, "Fiction Circuit" is more than just a compilation: it's a product of sound exchange, blurring lines between composers and suppliers of sound material. All of the artists on this album share a love of creating electroacoustic music from field recordings or found sounds. These were used as the basis for the compositions, which was then sculpted, very much in the spirit of acousmatic musique concrete. On the A-side (source material by AMT), PBK delivers a dense, rather rhythmic track with a decidedly "industrial" feel, while Fiebig realises a rather harmonic ambient piece. On the B-side, Artificial Memory Trace and Emerge "play" the source material of PBK. AMT's piece qualifies as exuberant rhythm noise, while Emerge goes all the way into rather meditative laminar lower-case drone minimalism. Very different sonic textures and temperaments showcase the wide range of expressive possibilities of electroacoustic music. Ltd x 300 copies on green marbled vinyl with 2 full-sized inserts.

BASS COMMUNION - 'Reconstructions And Recycling' 2 x CD (Aquarellist) - £18.50

A strictly limited reissue of the 2003 CD featuring reconstructions of Bass Communion music by an incredible line-up of artists from the electronic, drone and experimental music scenes. Originally released as a single CD, this new edition has been expanded to include a second CD containing 2 long remixes by SCORN and EXPERIMENTAL AUDIO RESEARCH that were omitted from the original version for reasons of space, plus JONATHAN COLELOUGH / COLIN POTTER. These and the original interpretations by LULL, MONOLAKE, RAPOON, VIDNA OBMANA, CARBON BOY, BOLA, BLACK FACTION, and RHINOCEROS have all been remastered by Steven Wilson for this new edition. CATHEDRA - 'Time Was Away 1992-1997' 2 x CD (Zoharum) - £15

Known these days for his projects Codex Empire and antechamber, and as one half of Konstruktivists, mitra mitra and Oppenheimer MKII, Mark Crumby has been writing and recording since 1990. One of his earliest solo projects, Cathedra, recorded and issued a number of releases between 1992 and 1997 on a range of labels including Ant-Zen, OBUH records, MuzaMuza and Jara Discs. After being out of print for over 20 years, this new double CD, "Time Was Away" compiles 29 tracks selected from these releases, completely remastered, and in some cases remixed from the original master / multitrack tapes. Split over 2 CDs, the material is divided thematically, with the first disc focusing on ritual / ethno-ambient / industrial material, and the second disc compiling dark classical / soundtrack pieces. CORRADO ALTIERI & GIANLUCA FAVARON - 'To Found' CD (St.An.Da. / Silentes) - £11.50

"To find again sequences, sounds and samples, previously elaborated for other works and live performances, decontextualizing all of them to create new original material". These are the starting points for "To Found"... devoted to all-round experimentation and stylistic contamination through the multiple languages of electronic sound. Drone music, post-Techno rhythmic disintegrations, suggestions of the old Industrial school, field recording, abstract echoes and noise pulsations, for eight hypnotic compositions created between Cagliari and Treviso, with the precious collaboration of Anacleto Vitolo (mastering and additional mixing). DAVE PHILLIPS - 'Post Homo Sapiens' CD (Attenuation Circuit) - £9

Dave Phillips has often been classified as a noise musician, and this is true to the extent that high volumes and extreme frequencies play an important role among his musical strategies. However, the quieter moments full of foreboding (of ecological disasters, for example) are equally important, especially in this album. "Post Homo Sapiens" is not just about full-on sonic assaults, but also a lot about atmosphere and suspense - hence it is no coincidence that one track of the album is dedicated to Jerry Goldsmith, composer of myriad film scores such as "Omen" and "Alien" However, rhythmic, quasi-industrial noise parts also have their place in this album, as well as the dissonant microtonal droning of the opening piece "Biosemiotics", which sounds somewhat like Tony Conrad's early-60's string experiments, possibly played by crickets. Conrad explained his interest in the drone in socio-political terms, namely from his interest in the dismantling of any and all forms of organised culture. This concern may well be shared by Dave Phillips as he urges us to shift our attention from the narrow focus of our human-made culture to the larger natural world of which we are only a part. FABIO ORSI - 'Tre Notti E Un Mattino D'Estate' CD (St.An.Da. / Silentes) - £11.50

Another gem by Fabio Orsi to launch the new decade in the best possible way. A long journey of over one hour that aptly summarizes the whole sound world that Fabio has created during the years. Ambient textures and long electronic excursions permeate these timeless tracks in the best tradition of the Italian ambient master, using synths, effects and sequencers. GÜNTER SCHLIENZ - 'Know Your New Age' CD (Zoharum) - £11

Starting with the shimmering of seawaves, "Know Your New Age" takes you on a journey through the universe created by Günter Schlienz. Inspired by the works of Peter-Michael Hamel, Deuter and Eberhard Schoener, he has created six meditative compositions clocking in at 52 minutes. Schlienz merely takes cues from his masters to develop a sound unique based on sonic structures built on his own modular synthesizer, interspersed with occasional acoustic guitar accompaniment and subtle field recordings. After organ studies, music for space airports and a musical interpretation of autumn, this album would be best experienced meditating on the seashore. HEXPEROS - 'Lost In The Great Sea' CD (In The Morningside Records) - £11.50

Hexperos is widely known and respected for their romantic, Neoclassical chamber music. The all-new atmospheric and ethereal songs feature heavenly voices, neoclassicism, neofolk and medieval recalls with a strong celtic influence. Their third album reflects the musicians' fascination for ancient times, inviting the listener to hear stories full of sublime romanticism, with lyrics from Christina Rossetti and William Blake. Nature, Celticism and myths are the leitmotif of Hexperos' music, mesmerising with the sound of ancient instruments: cello, bardic harp, hammer dulcimer, bouzouki, uillean pipes and various percussion instruments. HEXPEROS - 'The Garden of The Hesperides' CD (In The Morningside Records) - £11.50

Reissue of Hexperos's 2007 debut album (originally on Equilibrium Music), remixed and remastered, with four bonus tracks, now presented in an 8-panel digipak with completely new layout. The exotic Mediterranean fragrance of sensual percussion patterns, together with the low rumble of Francesco Forgione's double bass and the soft keyboard pads enriched by the work of violinists Domenico Mancini and Alessandro Pensa, set the appropriate nocturnal atmosphere for Alessandra Santovito's soaring voice to cast its spell. Skillful instrumentation and arrangements balance grandiose dramatic moments against delicate passages, sparsely coloured with a discreet Celtic tone, helped by the contribution of harpist Francesca Romana Di Nicola. Neoclassical chamber music, with ethereal touches and a predominantly somber mood. A remarkable debut, evoking a mysterious sensuality and romance, easily deserving a place alongside the best works from acts such as Arcana, Ophelia's Dream or Dead Can Dance.

KRYPTOGEN RUNDFUNK - 'Tales From The Mirrored Spaces' CD (Zoharum) - £11

Developing sounds from previous works here, Russian post-industrial / drone artist Kryptogen Rundfunk uses more acoustic instruments (mouth harp, bowed guitar, metal plate, singing bowl, voice), yet stays true to his favourite array of synthesizers, effect units and of course his trademark shortwave radio noises and transmission interceptions. With this set-up he creates a dynamic sonic universe varying from ritualistic ambiental textures to heavy electronics, abstract multi-layered drones and sharp gritty noises. This release is continuation of his artistic way of explore industrial and post-industrial structures, cold sounds and massive non melodies. LUNAR ABYSS DEUS ORGANUM - 'A Sherpa's Sleep Is More Milk Music' CD (Zoharum) - £12

L.A.D.O. is a shamanic drone-ambient project that has literally appeared from a sleep. Its founder first saw and heard this name in a dream, and being quite surprised upon awakening, decided to embody it. Subsequently, many fragments of sound, associations and images came from sleep and drowsy moments, as on this album. Each composition is a piece, a fabric woven from the sounds of various origins: resonant dawns and dusks, roars of distant thunderstorms, rustling of small creatures, sough of wind and leaves, ringing of strings and trumpet calls. All this is interlaced with multi-layered electric threads of analogue and synthetic instruments and call signs of unknown radio stations. This swarm of sounds doesn't fall into chaos but builds up in a forest temple surrounding sleeping children, and the air vibrating with emptiness. Ltd x 250 copies in a 6-panel ecopak.

MASSIMO MAGRINI - 'Vrachnas' CD (Backwards) - £11

This is the first solo release from Massimo Magrini (BAD SECTOR / OLHON). "Vrachnas" is inspired by hypnagogic hallucinations and presents one long track full of drones, noises, distant voices, surrealistic soundscapes, fragmented sounds, for a real journey into the obscure side of the mind. Hypnagogic hallucinations are vivid perceptual experiences that typically occur at the onset of sleep. Hypnopompic hallucinations are similar experiences but occurring at awakening. Sleep paralysis is a state when, during awakening or falling asleep, a person is aware but unable to move or speak. It may include hypnagogic hallucinations, such as shadowy figures entering the room while the subject is paralysed. During the paralysis the sleeper may hear imagined sounds like humming, buzzing noises, voices and whispers. "We suggest listening to this recording with headphones or, alternatively, with speakers placed in an equilateral triangle with the listener's position". NNHMN - 'Church Of No Religion' CD (Zoharum) - £12

Berlin duo NNHMN ("Non-Human") came together to explore their love for the spectrum of gothic synths and the desire for immortality. "Church Of No Religion" is a collection of purgatory poems and lamentations. Allegorical, dramatic and literal, gruesome and ethereal - all that emphasises the work's mortal and ritualistic purpose, representing power existing within eternity. The album puts ceremony, liturgy and ritual influences at the forefront combined with dark synth music which has strong experimental approach and raw Gothic flavour (Gothic in the uncivilized and un-Christian medieval context). The album is full of rhythmic (but not harsh) electronics, with heavily processed female vocals embedded in looped rhythms, building into a kind of trance; a classic arsenal of synthesizers, and an acoustic ritual bass drum made by a Tuvan shaman Gendos. PAS MUSIQUE & RAPOON - 'Composited Reality' CD (Zoharum) - £12

A collaborative album from Pas Musique and Rapoon, previously released only on tape and USB stick in strictly limited editions in 2018, now reissued for the first time on CD. Six new tracks and field recordings, mixing the sonic worlds of Robert L. Pepper and Robin Storey (ex-Zoviet France). "...it shimmers with a haze of imaginary and real landscapes made artificial flesh, its coherence constructed into a miasma of hallucinatory soundscapes that glow with the acoustic aura of what John Hassell termed the fourth world... one long-form track that switches moods with the tides, seeds burning and flickering in dubwise refractions that hold attention like there is in fact no exterior world... ghostly remnants turning on multiple axes as if there was no gravity, no longer any earthbound source to their acoustic selves. Composited Reality is one of those collaborations that takes each participant's contributions and makes them something more, something extra, extra-sensory even" (Freq). PHELIOS - 'At The Mountains Of Madness' LP (Loki Foundation) - £19

With its majestic dark ambient atmosphere, complex dronesaceping and deep cushions of textural shamanic / tribal percussion, Martin Stürtzer paints with his 5th album of Phelios another expansive aural picture. This channels the unimaginable and connects with the cubes and subterranean caverns of echoing, vaporous, wormily honey-combed mountains of madness. Epically scaled soundwaves creating a fantastic, daemoniac glimpse, among the churning zenith-clouds, of what lay back of those other violet westward mountains which the Old Ones had shunned and feared. RAMLEH - 'It's Never Alright / Kerb Krawler' 7" (Fourth Dimension) - £6

***SLIGHTLY DINGED CORNER*** The first track on this double-A side, "It's Never Alright", with its city-destroying stomp attack, collides head on with the kind of untamed keyboard splurge the group is more generally renowned for exorcising. The flipside, "Kerb Krawler", helps to reel you back to a psychedelic orbit nobody but Ramleh know how to navigate. Typical for Ramleh as they stand now, both songs represent just two of the many sides they're now given to exploring. Bold, serious, playful and once again illustrating exactly how easily Gary Mundy (Kleistwahr, S.P.I.T.E., Toll) and Anthony Di Franco (JFK, AX, Ethnic Acid, Novatron), straddle the line of being great musicians never afraid to turn that notion on its head by rising to new challenges, this single pays testament to their current upward curve. SPHERIC - 'Music For Laboratories' CD (St.An.Da. / Silentes) - £11.50

Spheric is Roman composer Orlando Lostumbo. This work is inspired by his working in the biomedical field at the Istituto Superiore di Sanitá research institute. The ongoing contact with scientists and researchers gave the artist the idea to create Ambient music for laboratories, inspired by Brian Eno's 1978 masterpiece "Music For Airports" and topics such as DNA replication, spiral waves, diffraction, bacterial reproduction. In this work Lostumbo uses electronic sounds, piano and double bass, deconstructing, superimposing and displacing the electronic and acoustic sounds, creating effects that lead to continuous processes of sound transformation within a circular and mantric music. Using overlapping loops he highlights the repetitiveness and circularity of the mechanisms of life and, through manipulation, the destruction and deconstruction of matter that leads to a new birth. THE STARGAZER'S ASSISTANT - 'Mirrors & Tides, Shivers & Voids' CD (Zoharum) - £12

Sweeping, intricate, sometimes ominous yet always exuding a warmth and depth of emotion, The Stargazer's Assistant produces pure cinema of sound. Ancient forests, vast plains, billowing clouds, rusted metal hulks, wet rock walls, light flickering in dark: these are the subtle visions of The Stargazer's Assistant. Originally released on Utech Records in 2013 as a double 10" vinyl, this recording is now available for the first time on CD. For this record David J. Smith (Guapo, live performer with Stephen Thrower of COIL's projects UnicaZürn and Cyclobe) is joined by Circle vocalist Mika Rättö, Sara Hubrich (Apartment House, Basel Sinfonietta) and Chloe Herington (Knifeworld). Originally a solo recording project set up by Smith to provide soundtracks for his work as a visual artist, it has since grown to encompass live concerts and collaborations with film makers and performance artists. The group is at present a trio comprising: Smith, David J. Knight (Danielle Dax, Lydia Lunch) and Michael J. York (Coil, Cyclobe). Ltd x 300 copies in a 6-panel digipak.

THE STONE TAPES - 'Revolutions In The Head' CD (Attenuation Circuit) - £11

The Stone Tapes here is: Edward-Ka Spel (The Legendary Pink Dots), Frans De Waard (Beequeen, Frieband, THU20, Shifts, Kapotte Muziek etc), plus Big City Orchestra members dAS, Ninah Pixie, and Philip Knight. "Revolutions In The Head" represents an almost transcendental stream of 60 minute soundtracks created over several days for a TV station in San Francisco. The concentration involved was almost terrifying, but the satisfaction displayed when that clock hit the magical 60 minute mark seemed like a glorious release. Big City Orchestra instigated the project and were joined by Frans while Edward Ka-Spel joined for the last part of the penultimate session, having literally just got off the train from London and connected his devices mid-session. When the music was over, there seemed to be a general consensus that this meeting of minds needed to be heard by a wider audience. "a 40+ minute transcendental head trip breathing a calm, blurred atmosphere of circular, hence the 'revolutions' in the title, synth waves, frequencies and radio sounds. That 'revolutionary' circular sound aspect is more or less the central theme here, embellished with, at times Nurse With Wound-like sounds, reversed tones, modified analogue squeaks and bleeps, static and a quieter bit with sequenced chords... a very listenable and pleasant sound sculpture" (Vital Weekly). UHUSHUHU - 'Bones & Drones' CD (Zoharum) - £12

UHUSHUHU is one of the most interesting drone / ambient projects hailing from Russia. Pavel Dombrowski composes and improvises with many other musicians under this guise using their skills to head into various directions in both genres. His albums are characterised by a particular attentiveness to detail and the richness of monolithic tapestry out of delicate melodies. On his album UHUSHUHU successfully creates a laid back, somnambulant atmosphere which acts as a signature for the project. Over the 45-minute piece tones and atmospheres are developed into moon music with hints of ethnic sounds. Listen to the abyss for a continuous discovery... this adventure may last forever. BARDOSENETICCUBE - 'Deadhead' CD (Aquarellist) - £10.50

"Deadhead" is totally different to all other releases from this great Russian experimental-ambient artist. Brilliant electronica, mixed with Neoclassical elements and Russian samples and hymns. Some tracks appear with Martial drums and trumpets, others feel more like the Finnish cult-label Sähkö. "Deadhead" is without doubt the most musical work of Bardoseneticcube. "The Death's Head moth (Acherontia Atropos) is the only butterfly which emits sounds. In many beliefs the appearance of this butterfly forebodes death. Interweaving of esoteric vibrations and beliefs accompanying human beings since their appearance on Earth was expanded in the 20th century with new flows created by people of the technogenic era. That whhich alchemists called "ether" is now filled with political slogans, calls for violence and personal ravings of every sick mind. Mass communications interlaced all cultures into one awkward mass. This was in the 20th century" 6-panel digisleeve.

GENDER TROUBLE - 'Chokehair' CD (Dark Vinyl) - £11

Gender Trouble is R. Loren (Pyramids / Sailors With Wax Wings / White Moth) and Faith Malimba (Black Doll), along with guest collaborators including Kenneth Parker and Ashley Scott Jones, and vocal spots by Marissa Nadler, and Scout Pare Phillips. "Chokehair explores the much ignored / maligned / ignored genre of Harsh Noise Wall through the prism of noise, techno, and the spectacle. Gender Trouble is static and synth and more static, waves and waves of static, and rejection of music and rejection of nihilism, but with a decent beat you can (but won't) dance to. Indebted equally to The Rita and Tiesto, I feel confident that if Little Richard was conceived in 1990, this is the music he'd be making today". 6-panel digisleeve.

"Dreambient" is based on exploration of the female characters from the Pagan past. SIEBEN - 'Sex And Wildflowers' 2 x LP (Dark Vinyl) - £19

"Sex And Wildflowers" was an artistic turning point for Howden and saw the introduction of his trademark looped violin work. It also produced songs that still populate his live performances to this day. Originally released in 2003 and 2005 on CD, the lengthy nature of the album means this debut vinyl edition runs to two records. There are the four extra tracks: 'Bluebell', 'Handfasting', 'Crimson Clover' and 'Loki Rides Again', along with the two original tracks missing from on the 2005 re-issue: 'Love's Trumpet' and 'Love's Other Trumpet'. Finally comes a newer version of 'Virgin In The Green' from "As They Should Sound", released in Spring 2009. Written, performed and produced by Matt Howden in Spring 2003 and Winter 2005. "There's a melancholic air about the music of Sieben. The instrumentation is in the tradition of folk music, but the delivery is darker, and decidedly more dramatic, with sweeping strings and a scintillating violin score" (Compulsion Online).
