ABYSSUM - 'Poizon Of God' CD (The Sinister Flame) - £11
Hailing from Guatemala, Abyssum have been flying the flag of black metal obscurity since 1994. The duo of Akherra and Rex Ebvleb have doggedly pursued a sound and vision always at odds with the trends in the scene; their uncompromising, olde-worlde black metal isn't for the masses anyway. This is a long-overdue reissue of Abyssum's sinister second album, "Poizon of God". Originally released in 2009 but in extremely limited quantities (Central / South America only), "Poizon of God" could have come out in 1999 or even 1989, so ancient is its magick and muse. Its grim atmosphere fully transports the listener to times long lost and locales far away from the sun. Resolutely raw yet somehow refined in a barbarically sophisticated way, Abyssum's songwriting is both progressive and regressive, with the incorporation of spacey synths and desolate acoustics elevating the album well beyond the oblivion-overload characteristic of equatorial metal. Authentically unorthodox. File next to Necromantia, Mortuary Drape, Behemoth and Gehenna. Comes with 8-page booklet featuring a bi-lingual essay from the band. |
ABYSSUM - 'Poizon Of God' LP (The Sinister Flame) - £19
Vinyl version of the above release. Limited edition (unspecified) with a full-size double-sided insert featuring a bi-lingual essay from the band. |
AETHYRICK - 'Apotheosis' CD (The Sinister Flame) - £11
Formed by Gall and Exile on the winter solstice 2016, Aethyrick have defiantly etched a unique Finnish Black Metal sound all their own. Bountifully brimming with magick and mysticism, simultaneously aeons-old and strikingly modern, the band's first two albums served as cornerstones for how to honorably uphold traditional all-caps BLACK METAL and feed it with a feverish creativity. Their third full-length spell, "Apotheosis" culminates their glorious march into the beyond - final and austere, and also as the opening of a new chapter. Where the preceding album "Gnosis" was a subtle refinement, Apotheosis makes that subtlety even more minuscule... and yet the sum effect feels grander, vaster, even liberating. They hold nothing back with their heartstring-pulling ethereal melodicism... the spirit-unshackling majesty of boundless illumination. "Apotheosis" fully brims with the band's occult character, now many decades walking the Left-Hand Path, and immersion on the listener's part is all but assured. Comes with 8-page lyric booklet featuring gorgeous cover art courtesy of the masterful Timo Ketola, one of the final pieces he completed a week before his untimely death. |
AETHYRICK - 'Apotheosis' LP (The Sinister Flame) - £19
Vinyl version of the above release. Limited edition (unspecified) with a full-size double-sided lyric insert. |
ANLA COURTIS & DAS SYNTHETISCHE MISCHGEWEBE - 'Squenun' CD (Ferns Recordings) - £11.50
Two longform tracks (c.20 mins apiece), co-written by Anla Courtis (co-founder of Reynols and a heavyweight in the Argentine experimental scene, active since the 90's), and Das Synthetische Mischgewebe (an Industrial / Electroacoustic heavyweight in Berlin who has been active since the 80's). "We somehow tried to use sounds as idioms. Turning them upside down and back again, make them collide with each other's distorted mirror image, let them mean everything one would usually not think them to mean. "Careta" meaning someone who acts like someone they are not. A sound, in music, usually one would say doesn't mean anything, but the sound of the word "word" does (if you have learned English). But, a collaboration allows to pretend it would mean something else and language is but a collaboration, words and meanings have to be shared to exist. Maybe to craft their own little world". Ltd x 200 copies in a 6-panel digipak. |
BATHORY LEGION / HERMANN KOPP - 'Das Unheimliche' MCD (The Sinister Flame) - £9.50
A collaborative split recording between the legendary Germany composer Hermann Kopp and the Roman act Bathory Legion. Bathory Legion, who came up with the title "Das Unheimliche" (uncanny or eerie), holds this concept to be the natural evolution, the coagulation, of the previous album "Drepe", with its esoteric and sinister meaning overcoming the psychological one. The Roman artist imagined a modified tetrahedron, a "terrible jewel", as an alchemical symbol fading into beauty. Bathory Legion's opening track, "Lahko" (sect or cult) begins with a voice captured from the Russian radio UVB-76, evolving into a rhythmic avant-garde and experimental ambient adventure. Hermann Kopp, known for his soundtracks to Jörg Buttgereit's Nekromantik and Der Todesking in the '80s, bases his uncanny track "Scapinelli" the 1913 film The Student Of Prague, in which the titular demonic figure makes a young student sell his soul, takes away his reflection in the mirror, and creates a disturbing doppelganger. His second track, "GAS n.71", was part of a series of recordings realized in 2017. The recording was covered and remixed by Bathory Legion as the second track of the release with an intense pipe organ and drum sound. For the cover art, Bathory Legion photographed a fairly old bottle in a house of the Apuan Alps, and this fact is full of meaning - will remain secret - then creating a digital painting of it. 28 minutes. |
CERAMIC HOBS - 'Black Pool Legacy' 2 x LP (Harbinger Sound) - £19
Psych-rock music but with voodoo curse words, twisting spiralling synths and guitars, and overloaded samples: the sound of impending mental collapse overpowering the unwary listener. The Ceramic Hobs are the band in the corner of the old man's pub round the back of the venue getting drunk before they either a) slay your senses with a mind boggling set of punk inspired psychedelia, or b) fall over screaming and fighting. Coming from Blackpool, they were around in 1985 until the untimely death of founding member Simon Morris (also of Smell & Quim) in 2019. This double LP retrospective of the North of England's most unique, overlooked and long-lasting underground band spans 25 years of recordings, with tracks taken from numerous releases carefully selected and sequenced by Philip Best (Consumer Electronics, ex-Whitehouse). Trip front cover art from John Godbert (Vibracathedral Orchestra), gatefold bad vibe intricate line drawing from Darren Brian Adcock, with a 12-page booklet featuring an extended interview / essay by Chris Sienko and the band family tree. |
CONSUMER ELECTRONICS - 'Airless Space' 2 x LP (Harbinger Sound) - £20
Some wondered how the songwriting team of Consumer Electronics (Philip Best ex-Whitehouse, and Sarah Froelich) would fare after the leaving their London home to take up residency in the United States. Well, here's the answer: a double album of all new studio recordings. CE deliver a state-of-the-union address that does for our American cousins what the band's earlier "Estuary English" album did for a British audience poised upon the coming madness of Brexit. Unusually for CE, "Airless Space" clocks in at 60 minutes, a hexed induction for a country labouring under a presidency, that like Brexit itself, few saw coming or contemplated having to endure. Soundwise, CE have maybe mellowed the tone a touch, allowing their electronics to stretch out and breathe, whereas the frenzied and anxious vocals of Best and Froelich remain as snatched and breathless as ever. Stunningly produced by Russell Haswell and gorgeously mastered by award-winning cutting engineer Matt Colton, "Airless Space" is Consumer Electronics' their most complete and rounded statement yet. High quality 180gm double vinyl with full colour lyric poster. |
CRYOCENE - 'Exclave' CD (New Forces) - £11.50
"Exclave" is the debut of NYC-based duo Cryocene, comprised of Stefan Aune (Kjostad) and Matt Boettke (Scant). Over the course of 5 lengthy tracks (42 mins) Cryocene weave together an ominous landscape of industrial noise dread. Bass drones and frigid synths are layered with waves of crumbling, crashing, shattering textures. Crushing and intense throughout, with some beautiful drone intros. "Exclave" tunnels deep into the depths before ascending into the cold, clear atmosphere. This is the sound of freezing winds blowing across a ruined tundra. Armories of carved steel stockpiled for conquest. The weight of eons condensed into sonic form. Highly recommended! Digipak. |
DANIEL MENCHE - 'Dirge' CD (Ferns Recordings) - £11.50
Daniel Menche has utilised a piano to create a vast and immense storm of noise and drones. In 2011 he created a piano noise album titled "Guts" that was the sound of a piano being violently attacked and then electronically treated. Ten years later Daniel Menche has worked with a grand piano that was in tune and located in a very acoustically sound studio. With careful elegance and care Daniel Menche wove long horse hairs in between the longest strings of the piano and bowed the strings for several hours to create massive amounts of overtones, drones and noise. Edited, mixed and subtly treated, "Dirge" is presented in a rather raw manner: the bowing acoustic movements was the main focus to the music rather than the electronic, making this a unique recording in his discography. "Rawest Dirge" is a bonus track exclusive to this CD release - the raw recording of several objects placed on the strings with tone generators resonating the strings, presented raw without any edits or treatments. "Dirge" was a very physical recording to make and therefore an album that truly needs to be heard physically loud and deep as possible. Ltd x 200 copies in a digipak. |
DEAD NORMAL - 'There Is Nothing Left But The Enjoyment Of Senseless Destruction' 12" (Harbinger Sound) - £15
The first deadly plastic bullet from Dead Normal, a Barcelona-based trio fusing harsh electronics with a confrontational punk aesthetic to devastating effect. Think: early SPK meets Consumer Electronics / 90's Whitehouse, distorted Scorn / JFK type skullcrushing beats, a sprinkling of deconstructed Mark Stewart / Tackhead-esque mutant groove and a ferocious dual male / female vocal attack reminiscent of Mark E Smith at his most irascible combined with Crass' Eve Libertine at her most acerbic. Push the levels into the red and you're still only half way close to the unique and original hybrid of Dead Normal's punishing sonic assault. Founded in 2016 by Mario (electronics) with Oriol Rosell and Zoë V sharing vocal duties, the members of Dead Normal have a pedigree spanning two decades in the experimental / avant-garde scene, including collaborations with artists such as The New Blockaders and 2nd Gen. |
GABRIELE GASPAROTTI - 'Istantanee Vol.1' CD (Il Dio Selvaggio / Dornwald Records / Dio Drone) - £10.50
A hypnotic, solemn, concrete and haunting record. Gabriele Gasparotti (Extrema Ratio) composes electroacoustic music on analogue instruments. "Instantanee" (snapshots), were created with semi-modular synthesizers (Buchla Easel and Korg, MS20 & SQ10), with added prepared piano, strings, turntable and environmental recordings. "Analogue synths have a strong random component from which much of their charm derives: they are machines that have almost a life of their own, so every sonic event that arises from them is by virtue of their particular structure and their sensitivity, unrepeatable... he tries to stop the moment by choosing between different types of tape according to the sound performance, just like the photographer selects the film on which to impress a moment. The effect is that of waves that intersect each other, weaving harmonic, disharmonious, polyrhythmic carpets, at the mercy of an incessant Brownian motion, of a pitching followed by a sudden deflating, with the sound that deforms, tapers, until it flattens out totally just before rushing back with the tide. Photographic abstraction to look at with the ears" (The New Noise).
Ltd x 300 copies in a 6-panel raw card digipak filled with analogue photos. |

GRUDGE FOR LIFE - A BOOK ABOUT RAMLEH - Book (Fourth Dimension) - £22
This fantastic book on RAMLEH focuses on their beginnings as one of the UK’s leading power electronics mainstays, to their becoming a more outward-bound rock group given to blending sprawling psychedelia, noise, post-punk, intense electronic music and far more besides, in addition to occasionally nodding to their earlier sound. Initially founded by Gary Mundy and Bob Strudwick, Ramleh soon tore apart the templates with a sound and vision entirely their own. The group, now driven by Gary and Anthony Di Franco (JFK), have continued to push themselves artistically and explore new places, never fitting into a particular style. This book collects around 356 pages centred on a lengthy and conversational interview with Gary Mundy that looks back at Ramleh's inception and moves through the group’s work up to and including "The Great Unlearning" album. "Grudge For Life" also includes additional interviews and insight from Anthony Di Franco, Stuart Dennison, the late Simon Morris, Teho Teardo, Stephen Meixner, Steve Pittis, William Bennett, Kate MacDonald, Juntaro Yamanouchi, Richard Rupenus, Justin Mitchell and others. Includes a full discography, extensive personal notes from Gary and Anthony, pages dedicated to reprinted ephemera, and some previously unpublished photos. Richard Johnson, responsible for conducting the interviews and collating the material, has also released albums by both Gary and Anthony on his Fourth Dimension Records imprint. He is also responsible for Grim Humour fanzine, and Lumberton Trading Company label, and has been active since the mid-80's as a member of the groups Splintered, Theme, Slugbait, Playground, and Husk. B5 hardback. Ltd x 500 copies. |
JACK PATTERSON - 'Milk Thistle' MCD (Ferns Recordings) - £10.50
New electronic compositions from New York experimental / electroacoustic / field recording / musician. "During the period I worked the most on these, summer 2018, I was reading the Daoist Zhuangzi and some Stoics. That material is likely why this CD has to do with detachment and inaction, as well as unspecifiable emotions. The synthetic / concrete sound relationship seems post facto to engage with the above. Inside and outside interpenetrate and relate in tension - openness, suffering, trouvailles and surprises of sound and feeling. The composition involved many layers of mixes, seemingly to do with the fact I'd been looking at a ton of digital imaging of manuscript palimpsests" (Jack Patterson). 30 minutes. Ltd x 100 copies in a digipak. |
JEPH JERMAN - 'Keep The Drum (Concussion Solos)' CD (New Forces) - £11.50
A reissue of Jeph Jerman's extremely rare 1990 cassette, originally released by Apraxia. Since the 1980's Jeph Jerman has been a key figure in experimental music, from the textural noise of his legendary Hands To project, to more recent studies in field recording and acoustic sound recorded under his own name. On "Keep The Drum" Jerman explores what he calls "concussion music", working with a pile of hubcaps, sheet metal and other bits of junk to rethink the traditional drum kit. The sounds on this disc crackle, pop, and thud. Each tactile scrape conjures up the rusted edge of some bit of scrap-metal as the ambiance of the physical space hums in the background. Recorded on a borrowed 4-track with two battered old mics, "Keep The Drum" is full of Jerman's trademark textural intimacy. Remastered by Grant Richardson to bring them to life without sacrificing their individuality. Digipak. |
JFK - 'Nganga' CD (Fourth Dimension) - £11.50
JFK is a solo project of Anthony Di Franco of Ramleh / Skullflower / AX, with early releases appearing on the excellent Broken Flag label. In Cuba, the term nganga refers to a certain creation made with an iron cauldron into which several items (such as bones and sticks) are placed. It also refers to the spirit of the dead that resides there. In Palo, it refers to an iron cauldron used to imprison evil spirits using chains, padlocks, knives, etc., which can be used for black magic. Dense metallic tones characteristic of Di Franco’s earlier AX pieces, constantly change and shift between crushingly oppressive and blissful overtones. These shards of sound spin seemingly out of control, at times kept in place with the assistance of staccato thuds, or the occasional blast of machine-gun rhythms. As the record draws to a close, the sounds of distress and collapse are relieved by a choir-like transformation, smothered under layers of distorted metal and synth. An almost devotional organ drone still manages to evoke the sinister - the proud architect of decay, surveying the results of their labour. Reissue of the 2017 LP (Chondritic Sound) with two bonus tracks, previously only released on a lathe-cut 7". Digipak. |
JUNKO & CRIS EX - 'Isolation' 7" Lathe Cut (CX Records) - £11.50
"Isolation" is the punishing new collaboration between the Japanese Noise Queen Junko Hiroshige (member of the legendary noise group Hijokaidan), and the visual and sound Italian artist Cristiano Luciani (aka Cris Ex). Three short, intense and harsh noise tracks using both digital and analogue devices by CRIS EX and combined with the unique and expressive screams of JUNKO. Play it loud! Ltd x 49 hand-numbered copies on clear transparent lathe cut vinyl with digital download code. Very few in stock - ACT FAST! |
MAYUKO HINO - 'Performance At Club F*CK In L.A.' DVD (CX Records) - £20
The legendary 1992 performance from Queen of Japanoise Mayuko Hino (C.C.C.C.) was originally released on VHS by Endorphine Factory in the 1993. This official DVD release contains the video and audio remastered from the original VHS: an intense Butho ritual dance combined with a bondage performance, with ropes, candles and wax, accompanied by a live high noise background played by Hiroshi Hasegawa (Astro / C.C.C.C.). "Her assaults onstage, gestures commanding the Theremin to respond with a deafening whine. Her assaults on herself, nude, dripping wax from a burning candle onto her skin, while Hasegawa Hiroshi waves a synth keyboard strapped to his neck in wide uncontrolled arcs, threatening to send the table full of effects pedals in front of him flying, the venue itself vibrating from the PA volume... Candid conversations offstage, among them agreeing that being nude in front of an audience gave the sense that the audience was far more naked and vulnerable than we were" (John Duncan). Bonus material: 1. original VHS version; 2. Astro + Rohco live at Uen Studio, Toyko in 2009 (Astro/Hiroshi Hasegawa: electronics and feedback, Rohco: electric violin, junk object and electronics); 3. DFH-M3 + Go Shibata "Nitro Cellulose" 2012 (Mayuko Hino: Electronics, noise, Ranko Onishi: Voice, noise, Junko Hiroshige: Voice); 4. photogallery. Liner notes by John Duncan. Ltd x 250 copies in a 6-panel DVD-size digipak, 350gsm paper with gloss foil finish. 85 min. NTSC 'ALL' format. Very few in stock - ACT FAST! |
MIKE VERNUSKY - 'Aatma' LP (Ferns Recordings) - £18
Incredibly dense Experimental Drone music, based on field recordings from Mumbai. Loops, granular synthesis, and chanting voices overlay beautifully sad and haunting atmospheres, create an intense journey. "Aatma is the re-imagining of my recent journey into Mumbai through sound, place, and moment with a Nagra SD recorder. The work was composed immediately upon my return while these things were, in a very real sense, still resonating in my mind. Part 1 is the arrival. Echoes of the shanka can be heard from a distant past across the Arabian Sea, as waves wash debris ashore and push you deep into the tumult of the city. Here you may experience the current of life and ride old trains into spectral shadows of obscure and eccentric Part 2 is a precarious walk across the narrow causeway leading to Haji Ali Dargah, a 600-year-old mosque only accessible at low tide. It is difficult to reach the mosque without being taken aback by the disparate forms of life unfolding on the way in, both in the sky and on foot. Part 3 is a departure from the hustle of the city. This section delves into the droning, colorful, and percussive instruments with their richly complex and evolving timbres. It culminates in a return to daily shanty life on the beach accompanied by transistor radios blasting modern Bollywood music... representing different and altered states of listening, living, and celebrating". Ltd x 150 copies. |
ORDINANCE - 'In Purge There Is No Remission' CD (The Sinister Flame) - £11
The highly anticipated second album from Finnish Black Metal act Ordinance. The title itself bears especial portent, as musically, Ordinance literally leave no stone unturned in their quest for the ultimate expression of black metal, blending many unorthodox means to their diabolical design. Utterly ominous, tauntingly sinister, Ordinance here create a seven-song soundscape that manages to unnerve and unhinge the listener as ably as the band have already done to their own spiritual parameters. A dense 50 minutes in total, "In Purge There is No Remission" possesses an atmosphere that's unpredictable yet unified, exciting but never scattershot. This is a work of master craftsmen and cunning sorcerers simultaneously, a delirious and delirium-inducing trip into madness and mysticism: a reconstitution of second-wave classicism with boundaries both broken and built. "In Purge There is No Remission" demands that only the adventurous and ardent apply. |
ORDINANCE - 'In Purge There Is No Remission' LP (The Sinister Flame) - £19
Vinyl version of the above release. Limited edition (unspecified) with a full-size double-sided insert. |
PLAGUE MOTHER - 'Carrying Your Halo' CD (New Forces) - £11.50
For more than a decade Plague Mother has occupied a highly influential position in the noise underground. The artist boasts a unique sound that blends haunting ambiance with crushing walls of noise, overlaid with an emotional intensity most artists would never even attempt. With an exacting compositional approach honed on cassette releases for some of the finest noise labels in operation, this is the first full-length CD for Plague Mother. "Carrying Your Halo" is the project's definitive statement. 9 tracks of anguish and catharsis that shred the listener to the bone before rebuilding them stronger than before. Plague Mother is unique in its ability to infuse compositional complexity into some of the most minimalistic and punishing aspects of noise. Anxious static pushes the listener's anxiety to the breaking point before avalanches of sound shatter the tension. A powerful statement from one of the noise underground's best Plague Mother is Roman J Leyva, who also releases as Slit Throats. Digipak featuring original art by Alexandra Desipris. |
RICHARD YOUNGS - 'Metal River' LP (Fourth Dimension) - £16
Richard Young's work can traverse everywhere from avant-folk or otherworldly pop to minimalist electronics or some of the most fervent 'outer sounds' one can dredge from the deepest crevices of their doubtlessly life battle-scarred imagination. On "Metal River", Youngs offers four songs of deep space beamed curdled electronics not far removed from being akin to the contorted death caterwauls of a cyborg species reaching out in uttermost anguish. It's like prime Edgar Froese getting snagged on Incapacitants before tumbling headlong into a dingy cellar that then has its door slammed shut and locked before one notices the only company is accorded by body parts in dusty and mouldy demijohns. Features three songs on the first side, 'Days of Gravity Indoors', 'Metal River' and 'Rainy Days Static Caravan', plus the side long 'Dual Monody of Accumulated Detritus'. Ltd x 300 copies. |
RJF - 'Greater Success In Apprehension & Convictions' LP (Harbinger Sound) - £16
A re-release of RJF's only album from 1983 (the band resurfaced 30 years later as Kommando RJF). "Lo-fi experimental electronic minimalism, built on somewhat simplistic elements - yet simplicity is used to utmost effect. Mid-range analogue texture, overlaid with distant agonised vocal screams... squelching noise and minimalist programmed beats... distortion and monotone spoken vocals... oscillating noise and garbled vocals. The sound is clinical and morbid in the best way possible. The 80's sound of the beat programming on various RJF tracks, is exactly the type of approach that would be later honed by the German scene and in particular Haus Arafna. Yet closer to home the RJF's sound was also clearly an influence other early Swedish industrial acts such as Lille Roger" (Noise Receptor). Mastered by BJ Nilsen (Morthound, Hazard). The outer sleeve features the original artwork. The printed inner sleeve also includes an article written by Kristian Olsson to provide some very useful background context to the group. Includes an A3 poster. |
SUDDEN INFANT - 'Buddhist Nihilism' LP (Harbinger Sound) - £15
One of Europe's finest Noise provocateurs, Sudden Infant is a Swiss Industrial-Dada-Noise-Rock outfit based in Berlin. "Buddhist Nihilism" consolidates the band's ability for bizarre and intense compositions, full of left field humor, powerful rhythms and twisted structures. Brilliantly mixed and mastered by Martin Siewert (Radian) in his Vienna studio, "Buddhist Nihilism" is a real fistful of sturm und drang, a real departure for the band. It leaves some of the noise and industrial elements behind and sees the band streamlining its approach. The bare bones, minimal throb recalls fellow travellers The Ex and Suicide, with your somewhat unstable downstairs neighbour screaming at the daily horrors flashing on the television screen. Joke Lanz: vocals, Christian Weber: bass, Alexandre Babel: drums. |
TARAB - 'Holes' CD (Sonic Rubbish) - £12.50
This offering from the Melbourne-based and internationally-renowned sound art project is almost sonically pointillist in parts, arranging fine sprays of discreet sound / noise in an outstandingly spatial design for a stereo recording. "...masterfully-recorded, impossibly patient music that sometimes sounds like a series of Foley effects without the movie... Tarab is skilled at capturing rich, detailed sonic events and parsing them down to just their most essential elements. On this album, sounds are separated into discrete clusters. Quick jabs of metal rattling, open-air, doors closing and machine grind are distilled to a seconds-long (or shorter!) rush, separated by pregnant silences... a sound-event might be real loud and upfront as if it's boxing you about the ears, then rapidly cut to the same sound but quiet and distant, then cut again to a sideways view of the same sound, all in a moment with silence on either end... one gesture describing decisive motion... This music breathes like a living animal" (Vital Weekly). Mastered by Phil Julian (Cheapmachines). The CD comes housed in a beautifully printed textured four-panel card wallet with insert. |
TRERIKSRÖSET - 'Kristen Musik Från Rågsved' 12" (Harbinger Sound) - £15
Forceful power electronics, from the wires of Sweden's Tommy Carlsson (aka Treriksröset, RJF, and Segerhuva boss), recorded hot in MONO for maximum hostility. Three dry and sharp blasts of uncompromisingly evil solid slabs of noise delivered with your insanity in mind. This record is an avalanche of tightly-constructed raw caustic crunch. Let yourself wallow in the depths of these dark electronic wails. This record is without doubt the strongest statement of intent yet from the uncrowned Noise overlord of Sweden. 40+ minutes, mastered by BJ Nilsen (Morthound, Hazard), with a locked-groove finale. Ltd x 300 copies. |

BJ NILSEN - 'Terroir' 3" CD (Ferns Recordings) - £6.50
BJ Nilsen is the Swedish mastermind behind Hazard and Morthound. "...he gathered sonorities deriving from a complete process of harvesting and fermentation. This, of course, includes the manual / mechanical traits of the operations, whose clamorous prominence constitutes the bulk of the material. At about 2/3 of the duration, the composer decided that the period of quasi-concreteness was over. From that point on, the original sources are condensed into supernatural reverberance with customary skillfulness. The basic sound expanded and stretched, the underlying energies uneasy to manage, the sense of being threatened by some horrific nuclear exhalation more immediate. Every component - either at the forefront of the mix, or as a darkish proximity - suggests a higher level of sensory activity. What had begun as a rather straightforward acoustic documentary is turned into a glorious painting of reconditeness" (Touching Extremes). Ltd x 500 copies in a mini-gatefold sleeve. |
CONSUMER ELECTRONICS - 'Dollhouse Songs' LP (Harbinger Sound) - £15
"Dollhouse Songs" further chronicles frontman Philip Best's (ex-WHITEHOUSE) trawl through the seedy thoroughfares of crumbling Tory Britain. Ably assisted on dark cracked electronics by Sarah Froelich and stunningly produced by noise / beat guru Russell Haswell. Featuring seven studio tracks, CE now features a twin vocal attack from the Best / Froelich - a furious tide of trademark sneered words spat out over a chaotic spew of mangled beats, bracing synths and state-of-the-art noise generation. This is their most personal and political album yet. "Dollhouse Songs" was mastered by Matt Colton at Alchemy for maximum effect. The record also comes complete with an inner sleeve featuring all the lyrics. Ltd x 1000 copies, featuring stunning cover artwork by Tokyo-based artist Trevor Brown. |
GHÉDALIA TAZARTÈS - 'La Bar Mitzvah Du Chien / Don't Cry For Me, Mamma' LP (Bisou) - £19
You want weird, you've got it. Ghédalia Tazartès (1947-2021) was known for his world mixing styles, languages, concrete sounds. He was a kind of shaman who lead us, guided us into incredible worlds. He made around 20 solo albums, all recorded in the same room since 1974. The "La Bar Mitzvah du Chien" side features different characters: a rabbi singing in an invented language, a shaman bewitched, a politician empty talking - all these characters are accompanied by percussion, cellos, children's choirs over an electronica backdrop. On the "Do Not Cry For Me, Mama" side, he used toy instruments, told a story like a child, alone in his room, singing loudly a looped song above a rock and roll record. He also involved his son Lalo on this recording. Bizarre and frantic in places. There is no side A or side B strictly speaking, so there are two different covers for this album: the "Do not Cry For Me, Mama" side features a drawing by Lalo; the "La Bar Mitzvah du Chien" side features a photo of the naked Quentin Rollet, on all fours, the 'dog' made by film cinematographer Yannick Ressigeac. |
NURSE WITH WOUND - 'Dark Fat' 2 x CD (United Dirter) - £16.50
Dark Fat is a celebration and documentation of 10 years of Nurse with Wound shows but to call Dark Fat a live album is far too simplistic. It is an entirely new recording constructed by combining the most interesting moments of the past decade into unique tracks. We have M.S. Waldron to thank as he is archival commandant of the Nurse With Wound oeuvre and since 2006 has recorded everything, and we mean Everything. He has recorded all the live shows, sound-checks, rehearsals, off-stage events and even covertly recorded the private conversations of the band. These recordings have been studiously and lovingly crafted into a unique sonic tapestry by Waldron and Steven Stapleton with delicate embroidery and filigree added by Andrew Liles and Colin Potter. Listen in the Dark and soak up the Fat. "...a surreal, miasmic dream logic that's entirely distinct to Nurse With Wound's sprawling catalogue of 100s of releases since the early '80s. The ephemera of 20th century avant-garde experimentation ebbs and swells in a heaving mass with elements of blues, rock, soul, free jazz and noise, constantly searching for an elusive spirit in transition between spheres of influence and psychedelic dimensions". 16 tracks presented in a 6-panel double digipak. |
VARIOUS ARTISTS - 'New Forces' CD (New Forces) - £11.50
In celebration of their 10th anniversary, New Forces have assembled a compilation featuring some of the best in contemporary harsh noise, heavy electronics, and industrial music around today. All-new tracks and more than 60 minutes of tension, intensity, and reflection from 12 New Forces affiliated acts: The Rita, Gnawed, Skin Graft, Treriksröset, Knurl, Worth, Breaking The Will, Rusalka, Kjostad, Mass Marriage, Wolf Creek, and Shredded Nerve. The future is bright. Digipak. |

NEIL CHANEY - 'Aura' CD (CSR296CD) £9
OUT 11th JUNE
 |
We are very proud to release the original soundtrack by Neil Chaney to the British supernatural horror film "Aura" (aka The Exorcism Of Karen Walker). From the first notes, the incredibly evocative compositions feature huge swathes of cavernous Dark Ambient, with unsettling dark synths in the vein of the legendary '70's Italian Giallo horror. Quieter, and indeed sinister moments, are evoked by emotive strings, synths and piano, adding pathos and a melancholy atmosphere to the disturbing score.
Aura: A couple discover Kirlian Photography apparatus in their new house. Intrigued by the concept of photographing peoples' Auras they unwittingly release an ancient evil. Only the local psychic can help and she knows far more than she reveals. Aura stars: Rula Lenska (a darling of British TV), Shane Taylor (Band Of Brothers), Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott (Nemesis).
Composing film soundtracks since 2009, Neil Chaney was also the creative mind behind the cinematic dark ambient / fortean electronics act Satori (2007-2008 with Justin Mitchell), releasing their acclaimed album 'Kanashibari', and the EP 'Contemptus Mundi' (feat Magus Peter H Gilmore, High Priest of the Church Of Satan). He was also the creator of early 90's Industrial act Pessary.

NORDVARGR - 'Pyrrhula' LP / T-SHIRT (CSR98LP/TS) £20/£16
OUT NOW!

LP + Shirt Combo Deal |
We are proud to announce a special vinyl edition of the Black Ambient masterpiece from Nordvargr (MZ.412). "Pyrrhula", is one of our most requested albums, and was originally released on CD by Cold Spring in 2008. This 2021 edition has been restored from the original masters, and further refined for the vinyl format.
Partly based on an old Swedish folktale, Pyrrhula ("doomlord") is a pitch black journey into utter darkness. This is a tale of foreboding doom... a portent of dark times to come... a blight on the face of this earth. These eight Black Ambient / Doom / Droneworks were brought forth from the abyss of Villa Bohult exclusively for Cold Spring and contain the malevolent vocals of Lord Nordvargr himself!.
"Beware the small creatures of light, they only bring misery and death upon the enlightened ones. For they will paint their breast with blood and reap your unborn angels".
Ltd x 500 copies on pale amber vinyl.
Black Fruit Of The Loom Heavy Cotton t-shirt with front and back print.
Comes with exclusive artcard when bought directly from us.
"If 'Pyrrhula' was colour it would be vantablack... It's an album that feels like it sucks the air out of the room. It makes you sit still and take notice, but most importantly, it still sounds as epic and devastating as it did 13 years ago" (Vital Weekly) |

CONTROLLED DEATH (MASONNA) / MAYUKO HINO - 'Split' Picture Disc LP (CSR291P) £20
OUT NOW!
 |
Two giants of the Japanese Noise scene present exclusive material on a special limited vinyl release.
Controlled Death is the nom de plume of Maso Yamazaki (MASONNA), who unleashed his claustrophobic Death Industrial / Blackened Electronics debut for Cold Spring last autumn (the sold out split LP with Rudolf Eb.er). "Devil's Sacrifice" (in 6 parts) continues Maso's obsession with heavy, Korg MS-20 drones. Deranged vocals choked under impenetrable, blood-soaked atmospheres of doom, death and decay, saturated with washes of anxiety, paranoia and alienation.
Mayuko Hino, 'Queen Of Japanese Noise', delivers two lengthy tracks. While the first track is filled with feverish, dense noise and swathes of savage electronics, the second, mind-melting electronic piece (reminiscent of her debut album 'Lunisolar' for Cold Spring) descends into a diseased, suffocating maelstrom, finishing on the verge of psychosis. In addition to self-made instruments, Mayuko plays noise with her six-theremin oscillators (in bright pink) - the one and only in the world, specially made by Ryo Araishi (a.k.a. ichion). Mayuko is most well-known for forming C.C.C.C. (Cosmic Coincidence Control Center) in 1990, together with Hiroshi Hasegawa, Fumio Kosakai and Ryuichi Nagakubo.
Picture disc LP. Ltd x 400 copies in a heavy PVC archive sleeve. |

HIMUKALT - 'Knife Through The Spine' CD (CSR289CD) £11
OUT NOW!
 |
Primitive, old school industrial, with an obsessive, post-mortem feel. This is the first CD edition of Himukalt's cult 2018 LP (originally released on Malignant Records), remastered and including bonus material from the same recording sessions.
"There's something uniquely old school and primitive at work here, capturing the claustrophobic, unsettled and fragmented sound of early Illusion of Safety or mid-late '80s industrial on a whole, contemporising it, and filling it in with an obsessive, post-mortem feel. Knife Through The Spine delivers a steady cascade of abstract sounds, festering with grinding pneumatic throb, coarse frequency blasts and sputtering electronic oscillations, with spliced snippets of processed, flanged vocals and a general sense of social anxiety and disaffection. A unique and challenging take on heavy electronics for fans of Puce Mary, She Spread Sorrow, Atrax Morgue".
Himukalt is the Nevada-based project of the enigmatic Ester Kärkkäinen.

FM EINHEIT (Einstürzende Neubauten) - 'Exhibition Of A Dream' 2 x CD (CSR292CD) £15
OUT NOW!
 |
Twelve dreams of musicians, artists, and filmmakers, interpreted by FM Einheit (ex-EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN), with voices by: Lee Ranaldo (SONIC YOUTH), Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (PSYCHIC TV / THROBBING GRISTLE), Susan Stenger (BAND OF SUSANS), Émilie Pitoiset, Erika Stucky, and the Gulbenkian Choir; with guest musicians: Volker Kamp, Saskia von Klitzing, Robert Poss, and Susan Stenger.
Exhibition Of A Dream (L'exposition D'un Rêve) is formed of twelve dreams interpreted as songs. Exploded in time, these are played as temporary and evolving patterns of shapes and forms in an otherwise empty gallery following the drawings of mandalas. Exhibition Of A Dream highlights the complex beauty of how to generate a dream in the mind of the spectator. A shared experience to be lived within our own personal inner space, these remastered dreams are an invitation to listen to a sensitive architecture of words and music.
Created 2017, recorded both in public and in private in the amphitheatres and the garden of the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, and in Einheit's own studio Steinschlag. The dreamers were: Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Lee Ranaldo, Émilie Pitoiset, Susan Stenger, Susie Green, David Link, Pierre Paulin, Alexandre Estrela, Tim Etchells, Gabriel Abrantes, FM Einheit, and Genesis Breyer P-Orridge.
Originally released as a 3LP set, and only ever available at the 2018 exhibition at the Foundation. Presented in a 6-panel matt-laminate double digipak. |

NYTT LAND - 'Fimbulvinter' CD (CSR234CD) £11
OUT NOW!
 |
Second edition of Nytt Land's 2017 album, which quickly sold out on first pressing.
Notably outstanding on the Russian scene and largely compared with the legendary Wardruna, NYTT LAND are unique in their devotion to ritual Northern music and tradition. Their approach, using genuine native hand-crafted instruments, and true Old Norse, help them to grasp the true spirit of ancient Northern music like no one in Eastern Europe has done before. Their music is mostly based on the sources from Poetic Edda, performed in original Old Islandic.
"Fimbulvinter" is enriched with instruments like bagpipes and trembita (Alpine horn), and throat singing skillfully used to illustrate the occurrence of the forces of chaos; chthonic monsters in the world of men and gods. Fear and powerlessness alongside belief in the coming revival, renewal. All Scandinavian mythology is permeated with fatalism, humbleness to fate. The same mood saturates "Fimbulvinter". The first part is dedicated to the creation of the world and people, embodying the warm seasons. The second half to winter, the death of all living things. 6-panel digipak featuring all lyrics. |

JAGATH - 'Devalaya' CD (CSR290CD) £11
OUT NOW!
 |
Jagath is a ritual/industrial ambient act from Perm, Russia.
We create our music at abandoned industrial locations - the bottom of a moist underground sewer shaft and inside huge hollow oil tanks - without using digital synthesis. We use simple, mostly hand-crafted instruments, found objects and our voices. We do this to share our vision of decaying post-industrial age, to unleash the spirit of deep beyond-world and unveil life in the abyss.
"Devalaya" ("Temple") was recorded in vast oil tanks from 2015 to 2018.
6-panel glossy digipak with photography by Gregory Skvortsov and Dmitriy Frolov.

'I REMEMBER YOU' (ÓSKAR THÓR AXELSSON) Original Motion Picture Soundtrack CD (CSR287CD) £10.50
OUT NOW!
|
We are extremely proud to release the official soundtrack to the cult Icelandic horror film 'I REMEMBER YOU' (Is: "Ég man þig"). Heavy dark ambient / industrial / orchestral soundscapes composed by Frank Hall, with a beautiful, solemn, folkloristic finale featuring Icelandic choirs. A must for fans of Graeme Revell, Steven Price, Lustmord, MZ.412. Digipak.
The soundtrack was created at the old industrial area of Grandi in Reykjavík, at a studio due to be 'gentrified' and forcefully emptied of the artists. "I was alone in this large building in this deserted area, working late hours, making music for a horror movie. It was during winter... wind blowing, darkness. There were some tense moments...".
"As soon as I read the script I heard low brass in my head and that kind of stuck. We used a lot of brass instruments, filtered and processed throughout. I also ended up using a lot of bowed guitar, sometimes doubling the brass, sometimes more like a sound effect". Hall also used analogue synths on the special climactic track "Montage".
On the finale, Hall reminisces: "Móðir mín í kví kví (My Mother In The Sheep Pen) is an old Icelandic folk song. The lyrics are based on Icelandic folklore about a woman who had a baby which she couldn't afford to have and left it outside to die, wrapped in a rag. The infant then becomes what we Icelandic call "Útburður" - the ghost of a child who has been left out to die. Some time later the woman wants to go to a dance but has no pretty clothes to wear. She is in the sheep pen attending to the sheep when she hears this whispering outside: "My mother in the sheep pen, don't you worry because I'll lend you my rag, my rag to dance in". It's a rather ominous lyric and this song is sometimes sung for Icelandic babies as a lullaby... a little odd custom perhaps. I remember my mother singing this to me. This is one of my favourite Icelandic folk songs, and when I created the music for "I Remember You", which is about a lost child that haunts people, I suggested to director Óskar Thór Axelsson that I should make an Icelandic choir version of it and use it as a theme / credit song. He loved the idea".
'I Remember You' is based on the internationally acclaimed novel by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir, the "Queen of Icelandic Crime". |

WESTERN, CREED, SPYBEY
'W ands' CD (CSR280CD) £11
OUT NOW!
|
A posthumous collaboration between the late Phil Western (DOWNLOAD, BEEHATCH), Jesse Creed (THE PASSENGER) and Mark Spybey (DOWNLOAD, DEAD VOICES ON AIR, REFORMED FACTION, BEEHATCH). Both Phil and Jesse shared a love for vintage analogue synthesizers such as the VCS3, and the music for "W ands" was largely created using this equipment. In the spirit of how it was created, Spybey added improvised passages using his collection of homemade and ethnic instruments and then edited the pieces.
Phil would often talk about being 'taken away' by music. Both Jesse and Mark have laboured to do this through their own music too, not as a means of escape but to transcend. This music strives to explore the desire to go beyond the ordinary everyday experience and to reach a place where the egos and the individual contributions of the players are largely inconsequential. A place where time doesn't really matter. A place of healing and invention.
An album of expansive drones and analogue electronics, which will undofubtedly appeal to fans of Coil, Nurse With Wound, Zoviet France. Digipak.

LLYN Y CWN 'Dinorwic' CD (CSR286CD) £11
OUT NOW!
|
Llyn Y Cwn conveys atmosphere and environment through deep ambient sounds. The sound of nature re-establishing itself in the post-industrial wilderness of a former quarry. A phantasm of echoes reflecting the bleak majesty and poetic melancholy of the hinterland of North Wales. A hole within a void, a place defined by absence in a world of negative space.
The backdrop for this cavernous soundtrack is Dinorwic slate quarry. The field recordings were taken in this vast subterranean environment where an exposed scar of rock is carved out of the mountainside on the western slope of Elidir Fawr in Snowdonia, North Wales.
Standing alone in the quarry, which covers 700 acres up to a height of 600m, it isn't difficult to imagine work going on around you with the abandoned industrial landscape juxtaposed against the backdrop of the majestic Snowdonia skyline.
Each track is named after an area of the quarry, descending ever deeper through each rock gallery, with their acoustically unique echoes and sounds. The landscape is in a state of constant flux with small avalanches of rock and spoil slate tumbling over itself - it was such a landslide that led to the eventual demise of the quarry. The hydroelectric power station, built deep underground inside the mountain, can be heard rumbling away through the various air shafts dotted around the quarry, adding to the overall ominous feel of the pieces.
File next to fellow Welshman Lustmord.
Presented in a 6-panel digipak with breathtaking photography by the artist. |

LA BREICHE 'Le Rite' CD (CSR280CD) £11
OUT NOW!
|
LA BREICHE ("the witch") features YAN AREXIS (Stille Volk / Sus Scrofa / Common Eider, King Eider / Coume Ouarnède), and PATRICK LAFFORGUE (Stille Volk / Sus Scrofa / Hantaoma). The two musicians are also the creators of the cult festival L'Homme Sauvage, held in Midi-Pyrenees each year.
After their 2017 debut "Le Mal des Ardents" (Cold Spring), "Le Rite" opens a new door, with post-folk sounds close to post-rock, influenced by ancient music, with folk used in a modernist way. Dark, ambient and yet mystical... deep with grandiose landscapes.
The sound of La Breiche is situated at the crossroads of early music and dark ambient; ambient music, industrial music with a strong ritual dimension. Their electro-acoustic is music based on old instruments such as the hurdy-gurdy, mixed with analogue synths, field recordings, and ritual objects, taking a mystified look at nature, archaic societies, rites, beliefs and lores, animism.
Presented in a stunning 6-panel digipak with artwork by Dehn Sora.
