NEW JAGATH INTERVIEW
There's a new interview with Jagath @ Side-Line Magazine:
"JAGATH never saw daylight, it is always in twilight... Post-Industrial and Post-Cold War abandoned environments always inspired me... I don't really think JAGATH is connected with early Industrial music although the spirit still inspires me.... I found some local junk and made a spring guitar-like thing, then I realized it is like one that FM EINHEIT used."

ALEXEY TEGIN (PHURPA) - 'Gyer - Sacred Tibetan Music Of Bon Tradition' CD (Monotone) - £11
Alexey Tegin is the founder member and leader of PHURPA, a practitioner of the sacred ritual of Tibetan pre-Buddhist Bon tradition. Being rather traditional than industrial record, "Gyer" can nonetheless to be compared with such industrial ritual legends as Sigillum S "Bardo-Thos-Grol", early Ain Soph and Current 93, since it is far more darker than anything you would normally find on the ethnic / traditional music albums. With genuine throat singing, shivering Tibetan bells, and a range of traditional instruments (horns, bells, flute, percussion), let "Gyer" put you in a trance. This was Alexey's only solo album and was recorded 5 years before the formation of PHURPA.

BLACK EGG & ALONE IN THE HOLLOW GARDEN - 'A Golden Thread: The Three Fates' MCD (Zazen Sounds) - £10
"A Golden Thread: The Three Fates" is the alchemical collaboration between the French dark electronic project Black Egg (featuring Ushersan from the legendary cold wave band Norma Loy, and his partner Ymaltzin on vocals) and the ritual ambient entity Alone In The Hollow Garden, one of the many creative manifestations of Dan Serbanescu (Tanz Ohne Musik). Themed around the Three Fates - Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos - these collaborative tracks offer the listener a unique esoteric mix of darkwave and ritual ambient, where synthesizers and drum machines merge naturally with acoustic ritual instruments, bells, sitar, piezo devices, metal percussion, magick samples, and resonant female vocals in French language. Already sold out from the label! Digipak.
|
DEMONOLOGISTS / UTARM - 'Demonologists / Utarm' CD (Fall Of Nature) - £11.50
Split release from two nihilistic acts: Indiana-based Blackened Noise / Horror Electronics duo DEMONOLOGISTS, and Norwegian Drone / Noise / Black Ambient one-man outfit UTARM. Harmful, anxiety inducing frequencies and blackened trepidation from both artists. Originally scheduled for a 2013 release, this accursed thing has finally crawled into existence. A must have release for fans of Gnaw Their Tongues! Ltd x 300 copies.
|
GRUNTSPLATTER - 'Dragging The Rivers Of Sleep' CD (Fall Of Nature) - £11.50
Gruntsplatter was born in 1994 as a malleable creature that congealed somewhere in the grey area between Death Industrial, Noise and Dark Ambient. With "Dragging The Rivers Of Sleep", Gruntsplatter awakens from its slumber, ahead of the new album "Dowsing In The Cancer Lands", due to be released on Crionic Mind. From the mid 90's to the mid 2000's, Gruntsplatter remained as one of the most original and consistent outfits in dystopian Industrial / Noise / Dark Ambient circles with his particular brand of dread-inducing textures, menacing slow-shifting dynamics and eerie droning soundscapes. A collection of rare tracks recorded 1999-2015: from impossible to find compilations, to alternative versions, plus four previously unreleased tracks. Expertly mastered by Thomas Garrison. Limited Edition (unspecified).
|
MASKHEAD - 'Rough Disciplines' CD (Hiisi Productions) - £11
This Finnish harsh noise entity offers sleazy and rough self-made electronics, oscillators and effects, and metal junk cut-ups. "Rough Disciplines" start Maskhead's S/M oriented album trilogy, taking inspiration from Grindhouse. Filthy and deranged sounds as always, but in the case of Maskhead there are always some new twists. This is Maskhead’s fourth album, after a highly praised split 7" with Killer Bug, a few compilation tracks and brutal "Bizarre Offerings" album. Sealed card sleeve with NSFW art.
|
MUSTA TOTEEMI - 'Kaarna' CD (Hiisi Productions) - £11.50
Musta Toteemi is Veli-Matti "Läjä" Äijälä (The Kolmas, Vihan Miehet, Death Trip, Terveet Kädet) and Toni Kandelin (SSRI, Kolmas Ilmestys!, Rope). "Kaarna" is the last chapter of the album trilogy from Musta Toteemi - starting with the eponymous "Musta Toteemi" (2019), through "Alitajunnan Rihmasto" (2020), and now finishing with "Kaarna" (2021) **We have all 3 titles in stock!**. The duo relies on the hypnotic power of minimalism and repetition - not everything is what it sounds or looks like, but beneath the layers lies another frightening and fascinating alternative reality. Dark, noisy and chilling minimalistic soundscapes. A shamanistic audio trip with piercing electronics, hypnotic rhythms, meditative drones, and dark rumbling oscillator noises. Digipak.

|
Ô PARADIS - 'Liquido' CD (Dark Vinyl) - £13.50
The new album from the Spanish melancholic Neofolk 'n' Pop / Darkwave act. A dark, dirty and dejected album consisting of a highly successful punk / rough energy, to which only Aloma Ruiz Boada's violin adds splashes of colour. "There is a character trait in Ô Paradis' work that has become increasingly clear in recent years, namely the tendency to depict something like beauty, opulence, euphony, etc. not only as something fragile, but in an almost chaotic and occasionally brittle messiness - as a dusty treasure trove and junk room of sounds that just about so many catchy things are added that create a fine, harmonious framework. And still, in an almost magical way, an impression of pop... gentle Spanish singing, contemplative string parts that run through the whole album... exciting rattles and monumental drum rolls and throw the listener into a subject of the Counter-Reformation of the 16th century, while flowing water and the meandering violin indicate the actual leitmotif... the paradoxical balance between tension and relaxation, while hoarse singing over sultry organs celebrates exhaustion" (African Paper). 6-panel ecopak.
|
ROPE - 'Black Sermon' CD (Hiisi Productions) - £11
As the album title suggests, this is Occultic Ritual / Ambient music. Rope is a new audio / visual project from Finnish artist Toni Kandelin (SSRI, Musta Toteemi, Kolmas Ilmestys!). The music of Rope is a sonic journey into the darkest corners of occult and esoteric matters, and its reflections towards the human psyche. This first part of the ROPE project deals with the subject via pure sound. "Black Sermon" is an experimental, longform piece which combines atmospheric live vocals / sound manipulations and eerie field recordings.
|
SUN STABBED - 'In Girum Imus Nocte Et Consumimur Igni' LP (Doubtful Sounds) - £20
A heavy attack drifting between drones and psychedelic freak out minus the boring guitar solos. Anyone only slightly fan of Dead C/Surface Of The Earth or Sunn O))) fans should take notice. "Sun Stabbed plays drone music... this is not a case of using a variety of loop pedals and loops sounds, but rather picking up frequencies with guitars and amplifiers in the recording area, maybe using an E-bow, and picking up the sound with a bunch of microphones, using the recording area as a separate element of the music... The intensity here is on a different level, one that doesn't slap you in the face but crawls under your skin. Loud music, but it is also to be played loud and fully immerse the listener... it acts like massive waves washing up on the shores. Cascading drone music! This is simply great stuff" (Vital Weekly). Ltd x 300 copies with two A6 artcards.
|
TEHÔM - 'The World You Live In' CD (Zazen Sounds) - £12
A special album recorded during the Mist Crossing Division night together with Phurpa at Cultural Centre "Bumazhnaya Fabrika" in Moscow, October 2019. Some tracks were performed for the first time, including the droning ritual tracks 'Jaldabaoth' and 'Tardema', from TeHÔM's cult second album "Theriomorohic Spirits". The album also includes an exclusive new studio track, 'Ars Magna'. It is about the search for peace within himself edifying the alchemy of form and sound itself, without the magic of verbal components in only one echo of the universe in its vibrations, rhythms and the bustle of particles. Close your eyes and find yourself becoming only an ab-stract construct burnished out of light and shadow. Already sold out from the label! Digipak with cover art by Roman Antonov.
|

Ltd x 200 copies in a digipak featuring artwork from the original releases.
|
UN REGARD FROID - 'Accélération' CD Boxset (Cipher Productions) - £12
Inhumanist singularity (power) electronics / industrial. "Accélération" is the second full-length by Quebec-based project Un Regard Froid. Ltd x 100 copies (CD proper) in a printed box, with a 16-page booklet of expositive artwork. Australian import.
|
VENTA PROTESIX - 'Futanari Princess' 7" (Cipher Productions / Lonktaar / Dry Lungs / Underground Pollution) - £8.50

VARIOUS ARTISTS - 'Anthology Of Experimental Music From Peru' CD (Unexplained Sounds Group) - £12
Once overlooked as a source of great music, producing everything from psychedelia to punk, and ethereal bliss to powerful riffs, Peru is rapidly advancing to the forefront and a well-deserved spot the history of musical evolution. With experimentation being a common denominator in everything Peru has delivered to the world, this compilation details how these experimental and risk-taking tendencies have been developing. Keeping its focus on contemporary artists rather than on those coming from the "50's Generation" (as the first composers are referred to), the aim of this anthology is to highlight the genre's evolution from the fusion of European avant-garde influences with Peruvian folklore, to the current day, in which artists keep pushing the envelope, creating a new identity for future artists to follow. Features: Árbol, Ivanka Cotrina, Rodolfo Ontaneda, CAO, Marcelo Mellado, Kevin Salkeld & Juan Pablo Egúsquiza, Paola Torres Núñez del Prado & The People of Tupicocha, Brageiki, Vanessa Valencia Ramos, José Alfredo Rodríguez, Qsn10-97, Wilder Gonzales Agreda, Fiorella16, Ian Duclos, and #DMTh5. Ltd x 200 copies in a digipak.

ASTRO - 'Shell Star / Spica' CD (Cipher Productions) - £11
Composed by Hiroshi Hasegawa (C.C.C.C. / Nord / South Saturn Delta / Galax / Shroud Of Vapour etc) this is a reissue of a double 3" CDR (Cipher Productions, 2004). Decorated with impossibly beautiful images from the Hubble telescope, it contains two tracks of analogue synthesized waves of cosmic sound effects, drenched in reverb. It is noise, but not like the noise of C.C.C.C. or other Japanese noiseniks, like Merzbow or Aube. Their noise is at home on this planet and they are at ease with its technology. Astro is lost and looking for a channel, screaming to be heard and recognised in an unrecognisable place which, to make matters even more disconcerting, is still expanding. The Synthi AKS played a significant part in this very 60s sounding spacey sci-fi offering. The past offered a future quite unlike this present, which resembles evermore the cold materialism of the 1950s. Ltd x 500 copies.
|
BLOOD OV THEE CHRIST - 'Master Control' CD (Segerhuva) - £11
Classic Swedish Power Electronics. "Master Control was meant to hurt, and it did. It still does... a work of true and deeply original vision... it takes its departure from the Iphar / Whitehouse / Broken Flag tradition, but rapidly takes a weird turn and ends up somewhere else; at the very edge of a completely unknown territory. The unspeakable mad landscapes of HP Lovecraft seem to be one point of reference, snuff movies by Brazilian death squads another. And plenty of attitude in between... the work of a stunningly apocalyptic genius; it will likely blow your mind as it did mine. This is extremely powerful stuff" (Tommy Olsson). Master Control was originally released as an ultra-obscure tape back in 1988 (Lilit), and it is clear that it has stood the test of time, sounding just as raw, visceral and bloodthirsty as it did back then. Dark, obsessive, and frightening as hell. Reissue of the original C-60 plus a 10 minute bonus track recorded in 1988. Remastered by BJ Nilsen (Hazard, Morthound).
|
CON-DOM - 'The Eighth Pillar - A Confession Of Faith' CD (Functional / Tesco Organisation) - £12
"The Eighth Pillar" was the first full length release by UK Power Electronics outfit Con-Dom back in 1991 (SFCR). The CD is inspired by the life, writings and example of British author T.E. Lawrence - an enigmatic outsider who lived a tortured odyssey of physical and spiritual extremes in search of his own personal faith. The name of the CD derives from his book called "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom". The powerful sounds and strong vocals give a good impression on how torturing the life of Lawrence must have been. Con-Dom explores every kind of social tension with an acidic, violent and uncompromising attitude. Those who missed the LP version must see this record as a milestone or just a simple must! Digipak with booklet containing the same artwork as the original release.
|
JOHN MURPHY & BEN TAYLOR - 'John Murphy & Ben Taylor' CD (Cipher Productions) - £11
This lengthy CD compiles a series of improvisational vignettes recorded by Ben Taylor (Bordel Militaire, Ebola Disco, Chrome Dome) and the late John Murphy (Knifeladder, Shining Vril, Kraang, Death In June, Last Dominion Lost etc) during 2004 and 2005. The results vary from sparse ambient and percussive thrusts to pushing industrial and hallucinatory noise episodes: reflections of the duo's interplay, the weather, the environment and an avoidance of strategy. Ltd x 500 copies with artwork by Rus Brockman.
|
MEPHISTO WALZ - 'Rarities 1989' CD (Dark Vinyl) - £13.50
US deathrock pioneers Mephisto Walz were formed in 1986 by Barry Galvin (Bari-Bari) and John Schuman (Johann), following their departure from CHRISTIAN DEATH, which Bari-Bari had joined as bass guitarist while Rozz Williams was still vocalist. In 1988 Bari-Bari started working on new tracks with Steven Grey. David Hermon (bass), Mondo (vox) and Nariki Shimooka (guitar) completed the line-up. "Rarities 1989" is a selection of songs from their first EP, some of Bari-Bari's Christian Death material, plus some unreleased songs / versions, recorded live in the studio between 1988-1989 and remastered in 2018. Bari-Bari's musical style and distinct wall of chorus/delay-effected guitar sound makes Mephisto Walz instantly identifiable and unique amongst other pioneers of deathrock. 6-panel ecopak.

MICRO_PENIS - 'Micro_Penis' LP (Doubtful Sounds) - £20
The debut album from France's weird noise / experimental / 'no music' enfant terrible Micro_Penis: Heyer, Kittel, Ogrob (aka Mister Schleemm), and Spenlehauer. "Gross improv, illiterate, savagery amongst civilization, collective strain, drool and spit, mental deficiency, foul breath from brass instruments, exploiting human idiocy, musical p*rn*graphy, sound rubbish chute that does not have respect for anything nor anyone". Recorded 2006-08. Ltd 300 copies with 4 postcards and a sticker.

SMELL & QUIM / ONOMATOPOEIA - 'Live At Kirkstall Lites' MCD (Cipher Productions) - £8
Senior English statesmen Smell & Quim and Onomatopoeia offer up a horrifying 20 minute live collaboration which has been subsequently studio brutalised - read: glorifyingly distorted - for your sickly noise pleasure. The God-knows-what live antics are fodder for the studio mix's chipper, delivering an unrelenting pummelling of sound and a few bloodied stumps of input material at the end of it. Ltd x 300 copies in a sealed card sleeve.
|
VARIOUS ARTISTS - 'Anthology Of Contemporary Music From Africa Continent' CD (Unexplained Sounds Group) - £12
"Artist Raffaele Pezzella, aka Sonologyst, has delved into the largely unexplored territory of contemporary experimental music from the African continent. The fourteen tracks give evidence of a creative ferment that meld Western electronics with the musical heritages of the various cultures of that highly diverse continent. A good number of the pieces included in the anthology are rooted in song - in the cyclical rhythms of a given region or in the melodic lines built on traditional modes. For example, several tracks feature North African vocal, flute or oud music as source material for processing or as a musical framework for electronic overlay and embellishment. Other pieces represent a variety of musique concrete where radio transmissions or other samples are electronically rearranged. There also are more conventionally "experimental", abstract electronic works. This is a fine collection that provides insight into an area of musical experiment that isn't yet well-enough known" (Avant Music News). Features: FRKTL, Abdellah M. Hassak, Ahmed Saleh, Victor Gama, Eryck Abecassis, Healer Oran, Mehdi Halib, Nur, AMET and more. Digipak.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - 'Anthology Of Electroacoustic Lebanese Music' CD (Unexplained Sounds Group) - £12
"Lebanese music has a distinct sound due to the country's unique fusion of Western and Eastern influences. After 15 years of civil war and a decade of post war rehabilitation, the situation of alternative art and especially music was very poor in Lebanon. Things began to change around 2000 with the arrival of a new generation of musicians, more interested in experimental art forms than in fame or glory. The experimental music scene in Beirut may exist in relative geographic isolation from other global movements of a similar ilk, but over the past 15 years it has become a dynamic hub for a dense concentration of fiercely independent musical voices. This anthology aims to turn on a spotlight on and map the the best upcoming music from the Lebanese underground experimental scene". Features: Jad Atoui, Tony Elieh, Ziad Moukarzel, Fadi Tabbal, Marc Codsi, Stress Distress, Joseph Doumet + Charles Cohen, Youmna Saba, Two Or The Dragon, Sharif Sehnaoui, Charbel Haber. Digipak.

Features: Kaosmos, Mytrip, PureH, Cadlag, Ontervjabbit, Plament Vecnosti, Atouck & Ziazin, Jeton Hoxha, Adonai Atrophia, Mørket, and Siberian Saga. Ltd x 200 copies in a digipak.
|
VARIOUS ARTISTS - 'Music For Abandoned Cold War Places' CD (ZeroK / Unexplained Sounds Group) - £12
Since the 1978 Brian Eno album "Music For Airports", subsequent attempts to produce music to create sonorous ambient textures and/or to describe environments through sound have been numerous. With this compilation, curated by Raffaele Pezzella (Sonologyst), ZeroK provide sound descriptions of abandoned Cold War places, as part of a wider project focused on abandoned, decommissioned, or even vanishing places. As the decades pass these places will become icons of past ages, existing somewhere between history and modern myth. They currently occupy a Ballardian mental space where reality cannot be distinguished from ghostly parallel dimensions. Features: Grey Frequency, Joel Gilardini, HLER, Phalioo, Kloob, Super8musik, Sílení, Psionic Asylum, Vääristymä, Jeton Hoxha, Wilt, and Chronodepth. Ltd x 200 copies in a digipak.

CONTROLLED DEATH (MASONNA) / MAYUKO HINO - 'Split' Picture Disc LP (CSR291P) £20
OUT NOW!
 |
Two giants of the Japanese Noise scene present exclusive material on a special limited vinyl release.
Controlled Death is the nom de plume of Maso Yamazaki (MASONNA), who unleashed his claustrophobic Death Industrial / Blackened Electronics debut for Cold Spring last autumn (the sold out split LP with Rudolf Eb.er). "Devil's Sacrifice" (in 6 parts) continues Maso's obsession with heavy, Korg MS-20 drones. Deranged vocals choked under impenetrable, blood-soaked atmospheres of doom, death and decay, saturated with washes of anxiety, paranoia and alienation.
Mayuko Hino, 'Queen Of Japanese Noise', delivers two lengthy tracks. While the first track is filled with feverish, dense noise and swathes of savage electronics, the second, mind-melting electronic piece (reminiscent of her debut album 'Lunisolar' for Cold Spring) descends into a diseased, suffocating maelstrom, finishing on the verge of psychosis. In addition to self-made instruments, Mayuko plays noise with her six-theremin oscillators (in bright pink) - the one and only in the world, specially made by Ryo Araishi (a.k.a. ichion). Mayuko is most well-known for forming C.C.C.C. (Cosmic Coincidence Control Center) in 1990, together with Hiroshi Hasegawa, Fumio Kosakai and Ryuichi Nagakubo.
Picture disc LP. Ltd x 400 copies in a heavy PVC archive sleeve. |
 |
HIMUKALT - 'Knife Through The Spine' CD (CSR289CD) £11
OUT NOW!
 |
Primitive, old school industrial, with an obsessive, post-mortem feel. This is the first CD edition of Himukalt's cult 2018 LP (originally released on Malignant Records), remastered and including bonus material from the same recording sessions.
"There's something uniquely old school and primitive at work here, capturing the claustrophobic, unsettled and fragmented sound of early Illusion of Safety or mid-late '80s industrial on a whole, contemporising it, and filling it in with an obsessive, post-mortem feel. Knife Through The Spine delivers a steady cascade of abstract sounds, festering with grinding pneumatic throb, coarse frequency blasts and sputtering electronic oscillations, with spliced snippets of processed, flanged vocals and a general sense of social anxiety and disaffection. A unique and challenging take on heavy electronics for fans of Puce Mary, She Spread Sorrow, Atrax Morgue".
Himukalt is the Nevada-based project of the enigmatic Ester Kärkkäinen.
Presented in a 6-panel digipak. |

FM EINHEIT (Einstürzende Neubauten) - 'Exhibition Of A Dream' 2 x CD (CSR292CD) £15
OUT NOW!
 |
Twelve dreams of musicians, artists, and filmmakers, interpreted by FM Einheit (ex-EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN), with voices by: Lee Ranaldo (SONIC YOUTH), Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (PSYCHIC TV / THROBBING GRISTLE), Susan Stenger (BAND OF SUSANS), Émilie Pitoiset, Erika Stucky, and the Gulbenkian Choir; with guest musicians: Volker Kamp, Saskia von Klitzing, Robert Poss, and Susan Stenger.
Exhibition Of A Dream (L'exposition D'un Rêve) is formed of twelve dreams interpreted as songs. Exploded in time, these are played as temporary and evolving patterns of shapes and forms in an otherwise empty gallery following the drawings of mandalas. Exhibition Of A Dream highlights the complex beauty of how to generate a dream in the mind of the spectator. A shared experience to be lived within our own personal inner space, these remastered dreams are an invitation to listen to a sensitive architecture of words and music.
Created 2017, recorded both in public and in private in the amphitheatres and the garden of the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, and in Einheit's own studio Steinschlag. The dreamers were: Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Lee Ranaldo, Émilie Pitoiset, Susan Stenger, Susie Green, David Link, Pierre Paulin, Alexandre Estrela, Tim Etchells, Gabriel Abrantes, FM Einheit, and Genesis Breyer P-Orridge.
Originally released as a 3LP set, and only ever available at the 2018 exhibition at the Foundation. Presented in a 6-panel matt-laminate double digipak. |

NYTT LAND - 'Fimbulvinter' CD (CSR234CD) £11
OUT NOW!
 |
Second edition of Nytt Land's 2017 album, which quickly sold out on first pressing.
Notably outstanding on the Russian scene and largely compared with the legendary Wardruna, NYTT LAND are unique in their devotion to ritual Northern music and tradition. Their approach, using genuine native hand-crafted instruments, and true Old Norse, help them to grasp the true spirit of ancient Northern music like no one in Eastern Europe has done before. Their music is mostly based on the sources from Poetic Edda, performed in original Old Islandic.
"Fimbulvinter" is enriched with instruments like bagpipes and trembita (Alpine horn), and throat singing skillfully used to illustrate the occurrence of the forces of chaos; chthonic monsters in the world of men and gods. Fear and powerlessness alongside belief in the coming revival, renewal. All Scandinavian mythology is permeated with fatalism, humbleness to fate. The same mood saturates "Fimbulvinter". The first part is dedicated to the creation of the world and people, embodying the warm seasons. The second half to winter, the death of all living things.
6-panel digipak featuring all lyrics. |

JAGATH - 'Devalaya' CD (CSR290CD) £11
OUT NOW!
 |
Jagath is a ritual/industrial ambient act from Perm, Russia.
We create our music at abandoned industrial locations - the bottom of a moist underground sewer shaft and inside huge hollow oil tanks - without using digital synthesis. We use simple, mostly hand-crafted instruments, found objects and our voices. We do this to share our vision of decaying post-industrial age, to unleash the spirit of deep beyond-world and unveil life in the abyss.
"Devalaya" ("Temple") was recorded in vast oil tanks from 2015 to 2018.
6-panel glossy digipak with photography by Gregory Skvortsov and Dmitriy Frolov.
For fans of: Shibalba, Phurpa, Arktau Eos. |

Heavy dark ambient / industrial / orchestral soundscapes composed by Frank Hall, with a beautiful, solemn, folkloristic finale featuring Icelandic choirs. A must for fans of Graeme Revell, Steven Price, Lustmord, MZ.412. Digipak.
The soundtrack was created at the old industrial area of Grandi in Reykjavík, at a studio due to be 'gentrified' and forcefully emptied of the artists. "I was alone in this large building in this deserted area, working late hours, making music for a horror movie. It was during winter... wind blowing, darkness. There were some tense moments...".
"As soon as I read the script I heard low brass in my head and that kind of stuck. We used a lot of brass instruments, filtered and processed throughout. I also ended up using a lot of bowed guitar, sometimes doubling the brass, sometimes more like a sound effect". Hall also used analogue synths on the special climactic track "Montage".
On the finale, Hall reminisces: "Móðir mín í kví kví (My Mother In The Sheep Pen) is an old Icelandic folk song. The lyrics are based on Icelandic folklore about a woman who had a baby which she couldn't afford to have and left it outside to die, wrapped in a rag. The infant then becomes what we Icelandic call "Útburður" - the ghost of a child who has been left out to die. Some time later the woman wants to go to a dance but has no pretty clothes to wear. She is in the sheep pen attending to the sheep when she hears this whispering outside: "My mother in the sheep pen, don't you worry because I'll lend you my rag, my rag to dance in". It's a rather ominous lyric and this song is sometimes sung for Icelandic babies as a lullaby... a little odd custom perhaps. I remember my mother singing this to me. This is one of my favourite Icelandic folk songs, and when I created the music for "I Remember You", which is about a lost child that haunts people, I suggested to director Óskar Thór Axelsson that I should make an Icelandic choir version of it and use it as a theme / credit song. He loved the idea".
'I Remember You' is based on the internationally acclaimed novel by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir, the "Queen of Icelandic Crime". |

WESTERN, CREED, SPYBEY
'W ands' CD (CSR280CD) £11
OUT NOW!
|
A posthumous collaboration between the late Phil Western (DOWNLOAD, BEEHATCH), Jesse Creed (THE PASSENGER) and Mark Spybey (DOWNLOAD, DEAD VOICES ON AIR, REFORMED FACTION, BEEHATCH). Both Phil and Jesse shared a love for vintage analogue synthesizers such as the VCS3, and the music for "W ands" was largely created using this equipment. In the spirit of how it was created, Spybey added improvised passages using his collection of homemade and ethnic instruments and then edited the pieces.
Phil would often talk about being 'taken away' by music. Both Jesse and Mark have laboured to do this through their own music too, not as a means of escape but to transcend. This music strives to explore the desire to go beyond the ordinary everyday experience and to reach a place where the egos and the individual contributions of the players are largely inconsequential. A place where time doesn't really matter. A place of healing and invention.
An album of expansive drones and analogue electronics, which will undofubtedly appeal to fans of Coil, Nurse With Wound, Zoviet France. Digipak.

LLYN Y CWN 'Dinorwic' CD (CSR286CD) £11
OUT NOW!

Llyn Y Cwn conveys atmosphere and environment through deep ambient sounds. The sound of nature re-establishing itself in the post-industrial wilderness of a former quarry. A phantasm of echoes reflecting the bleak majesty and poetic melancholy of the hinterland of North Wales. A hole within a void, a place defined by absence in a world of negative space.
The backdrop for this cavernous soundtrack is Dinorwic slate quarry. The field recordings were taken in this vast subterranean environment where an exposed scar of rock is carved out of the mountainside on the western slope of Elidir Fawr in Snowdonia, North Wales.
Standing alone in the quarry, which covers 700 acres up to a height of 600m, it isn't difficult to imagine work going on around you with the abandoned industrial landscape juxtaposed against the backdrop of the majestic Snowdonia skyline.
Each track is named after an area of the quarry, descending ever deeper through each rock gallery, with their acoustically unique echoes and sounds. The landscape is in a state of constant flux with small avalanches of rock and spoil slate tumbling over itself - it was such a landslide that led to the eventual demise of the quarry. The hydroelectric power station, built deep underground inside the mountain, can be heard rumbling away through the various air shafts dotted around the quarry, adding to the overall ominous feel of the pieces.
File next to fellow Welshman Lustmord.
Presented in a 6-panel digipak with breathtaking photography by the artist. |

LA BREICHE 'Le Rite' CD (CSR280CD) £11

LA BREICHE ("the witch") features YAN AREXIS (Stille Volk / Sus Scrofa / Common Eider, King Eider / Coume Ouarnède), and PATRICK LAFFORGUE (Stille Volk / Sus Scrofa / Hantaoma). The two musicians are also the creators of the cult festival L'Homme Sauvage, held in Midi-Pyrenees each year.
After their 2017 debut "Le Mal des Ardents" (Cold Spring), "Le Rite" opens a new door, with post-folk sounds close to post-rock, influenced by ancient music, with folk used in a modernist way. Dark, ambient and yet mystical... deep with grandiose landscapes.
The sound of La Breiche is situated at the crossroads of early music and dark ambient; ambient music, industrial music with a strong ritual dimension. Their electro-acoustic is music based on old instruments such as the hurdy-gurdy, mixed with analogue synths, field recordings, and ritual objects, taking a mystified look at nature, archaic societies, rites, beliefs and lores, animism.
Presented in a stunning 6-panel digipak with artwork by Dehn Sora.
