NEW COLD SPRING RELEASES - NOV 2023
SONOLOGYST - 'Shortwave Spectrum'
2CD £11.50 - OUT 24 NOV

  Soundcloud  Soundcloud  Soundcloud   YouTube

The new Sonologyst "sonic documentary" delves into the secretive realm of shortwave transmissions; a chronicle of clandestine shortwave transmissions culled from a span of nearly four decades (1982-2021). These mysterious transmissions - repetitive voices, signals, sound pulses, short pieces of music - were collated and edited to compose the tracks of the main album.

Immersed in an isolating fog of dark ambient, deep drone music and cinematic sound art, it provides an auditory exploration of the ongoing Cold War. Originating from covert radio stations engaged in military and espionage endeavours, the tracks unveil a hidden sonic landscape of strategic communication.

The second disc, in its extensive presentation, provides a deeper immersion into these enigmatic broadcasts. Each recording remains unaltered, accompanied only by a ghostly drone. It offers an unfiltered glimpse into the world of clandestine communication, where words are transmitted beneath the radar and in the shadowy confines of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Double CD in a matt-finish gatefold ecopak with graphic design by Abby Helasdottir.
THE TELESCOPES - 'Experimental Health'
CD £9 - OUT 17 NOV

  Soundcloud  Soundcloud   YouTube   YouTube   YouTube

The latest chapter in The Telescopes' idiosyncratic exploration of sound combines hallucinatory ballads with transcendent melodies, clanging, and lo-fi buzzes, with a substantial amount of crushing and sound degradation. The result is an album radiating a dark and abrasive, yet ethereal energy.

Created entirely independently by Stephen Lawrie in a remote cottage in West Yorkshire between January to May 2022, the record was made with broken toys and cheap synths - mostly Pocket Operators and miniature synths, with no guitars present. The complexity of sound rests within the simplicity of the composition and musical arrangements.

The bonus remixes are two divergent interpretations by Black Market Karma and Mosaic Runes, both artists deploying their own respective skill sets and aura. The former with unfurling guitars and live drums, spreading a magnetic warmth and charm. The latter returning to the cryptic spectres haunting the record, drawing out the hidden spirit of broken equipment and infusing the tracks with their signature fractured ice.

CD in a matt digipak with art by Stephen Lawrie.

MERZBOW - 'Cafe OTO'
2CD £11.50 - DELAYED! OUT 14 NOV

  Soundcloud  Soundcloud  Soundcloud  YouTube

A documentation of prolific Japanese noise master Merzbow's double show at London's Cafe OTO in October 2016. Rhythm-driven and rammed with highly sculpted frequencies, Akita's sound is entirely remorseless.

Furious squalls and delicate sine-warps post this one on the more psychedelic end of Akita's output. Truly relentless, it is still hard to believe he created "Untitled Knife I" on a casual Saturday afternoon. Be careful with that volume...

"Performed on what looked like a hand-built guitar-like instrument and aided by a table full of electronics, all controlled by the legendary Japanese artist. The concert was very much about the physical impact of the sound. At several points during the set I could feel the fabric of my jeans and jacket vibrating from the extreme frequencies played at excessive volume... an intense and constant sonic attack" (Irregular Notes On Music).

Double CD in a matt-finish gatefold ecopak with photography by Masami Akita.
BILL LASWELL & PETE NAMLOOK - 'Outland'
6CD Boxset £38 - OUT NOW!

  Soundcloud  Soundcloud  Soundcloud  YouTube  YouTube

The 'Outland' album series was a collaborative endeavour by the visionary US bassist-producer Bill Laswell and the late German musician Pete Namlook that pushed the boundaries of dark ambient and electronic music. Spanning five albums released over a thirteen year period from 1994, this new boxset serves as a testament to the creative synergy between the two masterminds.

At the time the duo joined forces, the New York-based Bill Laswell was already a famous producer with a massive client list that included cutting-edge rock, pop, funk, jazz and electronic artists, but he had also founded the Axiom label in 1989 and been responsible for groundbreaking work in genres that included ambient, dub and world music. Pete Namlook was recognised as a pioneering figure in the ambient techno scene, having founded the label FAX +49-69/450464 in his native Frankfurt in 1992.

'Outland' became a fusion of their individual musical sensibilities that resulted in a unique set of releases. At the heart of the series is an exploration of sound as a vehicle for emotion and contemplation, with Laswell's signature basslines and experimental soundscapes interweaving seamlessly with Namlook's ethereal textures and intricate sonic layering. Each album is characterised by a sense of expansiveness, taking listeners on a voyage through rarely charted sonic dimensions. All have the ability to evoke a wide range of emotions and have their own distinctive sonic palette, ranging from ambient tranquility to cosmic intensity.

'Outland' has endured as an influential touchstone, its impact felt not only in its captivating soundscapes but also in its invitation to engage in deep introspection and cosmic contemplation. With each album, the duo beckoned listeners to transcend the mundane and embark on a sonic voyage into the extraordinary, where sound becomes a conduit for spiritual and artistic expression.

The lavish matte-finish boxset opens to the 5 "Outland" albums in separate matte sleeves, with all-new designs, and all audio completely remastered. This box also contains a new addition to the OUTLAND series - an album of dense, bass space drone by Bill Laswell, entitled "Blackland". The boxset also contains an exclusive card with an essay about the project written by BIll Laswell, July 2023.

BURIAL HEX - 'In Hiding'
CD £11
SATØRI - 'The Woods'
CD £11
VA - 'Arise - A Cold Spring Sampler'
2 x CD £8
or FREE WHEN YOU SPEND £23+
A carefully curated selection of the crucial compilation tracks from Horror Electronics / Post-Industrial project BURIAL HEX, gathering and remastering them together, striving to create a resonance between disparate sources, forming an extraordinary new experience.

Many of the tracks were from cassettes, vinyl, or digital-only releases for labels such as Brave Mysteries, Aurora Borealis, Clan Destine, Small Doses, and Buh, appearing here on CD for the first time - or in the case of 'Pentitential March', never-before released. Clay Ruby has remixed each track, in some cases re-envisioning them specifically to live together coherently in this incarnation, making this collection more like a new studio album rather than another anthology compilation.

FFO: Coil, SPK, Psychic TV, Trepaneringsritualen.

Formed in the mid-80's, with previous releases on high-calibre labels such as Broken Flag, Cold Spring, Trident, Mindscan, and Tesco Organisation, Industrial / Power Electronics veteran SATØRI returns with a new dark and disturbing journey into the very depths of human horror.

Using his love of pure noise, harsh synths and brutal percussion, SATØRI has created a dystopian cinematic soundscape in which to lose your very soul.

While the last two releases concentrated on what could be described as "observations on humanity's ability to drag itself down to its lowest common denominator", this new work focuses on a more localised depravity - that of the lone wolf. An individual who, having no moral compass, has no boundaries to cross.

Welcome to the woods...

DREW DANIEL (MATMOS) / JOHN WIESE (SISSY SPACEK) - 'Continuous Hole' CD £11.50 B.E.F. 'Music For Stowaways - out now! Ltd Electric Blue LP £23 | LP £23 | CD £12 VA 'Музыкальное Приношение' (Musical Offering) - out now! | CD £11
A collaborative album by Drew Daniel (Matmos, The Soft Pink Truth) and John Wiese (Sissy Spacek, Smegma, LHD,).

"Continuous Hole" melds improvisation and musique concrète composition into a uniquely sweaty document of labour-intensive rhythm. A finger puzzle of reconciled opposites: lockstep structure, constant flux.

Relentlessly variable source material is relegated to precisely timed gated forms and patterns. Without using any sampling or MIDI sequencing, rhythmic cuts are constructed entirely from volcanic, gnarled abstraction, eschewing typical genre elements.

Raw yet precise, from mayhem to menace, this is a album of strong contrasts from two American artists discovering common ground in the joy of frenzied cutting.

Reissue of seminal early 1980's electronic recordings from the British Electric Foundation (B.E.F.), aka HEAVEN 17 / ex-THE HUMAN LEAGUE's Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh, with Adi Newton (CLOCK DVA / THE FUTURE), and John Wilson (HEAVEN 17), originally a cassette-only release (1981).

• Ltd x 500 copies on 180g Electric Blue LP (Cold Spring only) | LP Black | CD

Following two groundbreaking albums ('Reproduction' and 'Travelogue'), the original line-up of Sheffield-based The Human League split in half in late 1980. The two primary musicians in the group, Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh, formed a new production company - the British Electric Foundation (B.E.F.). The artists they were to produce would include Heaven 17, their own new band formed with vocalist Glenn Gregory. This music was among the first recorded by Martyn and Ian directly after their departure from The Human League.

Available on CD (or any other format) for the first time outside USSR, Soviet composers perform their works on the legendary ANS synthesizer. Recorded in 1971, "MUSICAL OFFERING" is 6 tracks (42 mins) of experiments on the unique machine by: Eduard Artemiev (2 tracks), Oleg Buloshkin, Sofia Gubaidulina, Edison Denisov, and Alfred Schnittke.

"MUSICAL OFFERING" demonstrates a 'musical' machine unlike any other and has long fascinated cutting edge, modern electronic composers, notably COIL and THE ANTI GROUP COMMUNICATIONS (TAGC) / CLOCK DVA, that have both released recordings utilising the ANS.

A composer can not only create but also draw their music on glass discs, without notes To listen to the picture, press the button and a wonderful transformation will begin.

Digipak with the new artwork by Abby Helasdottir, complimenting the ANS process perfectly.

AMEK-MAJ - 'Amek-Maj' CD (Freak Animal) - £11.50

Debut full-length CD from rising Finnish noise artist Amek-Maj. Known for their great debut tape on Freak Animal in 2020, followed with notable releases on labels such as Narcolepsia, and Satatuhatta, Amek-Maj is also one half of the duo YANA. This album offers something very Amek-Maj, while not repeating itself. The "broken hand made roughness" of the current days of Finnish noise can be heard but also the heavy bass-loaded crunch and sonic nuance found from projects like Mania. Digipak.
BLACK LEATHER JESUS - 'Jesus Is Stoned' CD (Industrial Recollections / Freak Animal) - £11.50

Reissue of an ultra rare and hard to Finland 1993 tape release (Deadline Recordings) from Texans Black Leather Jesus, presented with original graphics and original sound without extensive boosting or revisionism! Raw and fierce harsh noise from the 90's! Line up: Richard Ramirez (Werewolf Jerusalem), the late Randi Shrum-Houston (Shrinkbox), and Scott Houston (Respirator, Threshold Of Sleep). Digipak.

BRUNO DE ANGELIS - 'Fluidics 21' CD (ADN) - £12

Bruno De Angelis will be known to many as a member of the groups Influenza Prods., Mana ERG, Flu, and most recently LHAM (with Giuseppe Verticchio), but he has also released a handful of solo works under this given name and Bruno Due. Originally a digital-only self-release under the title "Fluidics" (2012), "Fluidics 21" consists of 14 tracks of experimental electronic music with unusual rhythms, crackly dissonances, linear trajectories, intricate knots and obscure atmospheres. An interesting blend of contemporary electronic music and illuminated ambient music with some hints of his past Wave experiences. Digipak.

CAPRICORNI PNEUMATICI - 'Dissections' 2 x CD (ADN) - £14.50

Composed over a period of 4 years, the new work of Industrial / Esoteric / Dark Ambient act Capricorni Pneumatici (whose name is taken from an Aleister Crowley book), is a double CD featuring 8 minimal sound dissections (ranging 5 to 31 minutes) recorded in Sweden, UK and southern Italy. Dissection 1 is a frizzling track based on Tibetan bowl, maracas and "music machine". Dissection 2 is the longest suite, introducing low, calm waves of a forgotten sea that you should listen in a dark room. Dissection introduces percussive echoed noises, while Dissection 4 has a harsher sound produced by synth, electric guitar, tubular bells and soprano saxophone. Dissection 5 is a subtle track based on field recordings treated with skill by CP. Dissection 6 is an airy, echoing track with a lot of movement and different instruments struggling in a crescendo that keeps a dense tension throughout the piece. Dissection 7 is like an electric saw cutting a misty morning. The final track, Dissection 8, ends the album with an ominous ritual ambient piece created using electric guitar and metal percussion. 2CD in double digipak.
COV OPS - 'New Agenda' CD (Freak Animal) - £11.50

Cov Ops rejects the innovations, playfulness and technological advancement. It trusts on sheer violent energy and basic elements of industrial-noise. Its harshness brings it to the realm of noise, yet it clearly belongs to lineage of industrial culture. "New Agenda" takes strong opposition to the contemporary world, blasting a non-stop free form harsh industrial-noise attack in your face. "Hail the Excess Death Supporters, let the reset cleanse your soul. Lambs to the slaughter, wolves to the throne". Digipak.
ENTEN HITTI - 'A Tutti Gli Uragani Che Ci Passarono Accanto' CD (ADN) - £12

An introspective journey into darkness through an oblique and fascinating song form, blending avant-garde tendencies and an experimental spirit with folk / ethno-ambient influences. There is something particularly transcendental about Enten Hitti's beautiful new album 'A Tutti gli Uragani che ci Passarono Accanto'. It is a work that welcomes the "song" form, but dished out with the classic researched and experimental approach that has distinguished the band's work in recent years. The production is a long walk in the absolute darkness; hypnotic, sometimes lulling, sometimes disturbing, lit by the beautiful vocals of Adriana Pulejo and Simona Barbera. Enten Hitti drag the listener into a real vortex of the visceral and meditative, creating an intense power. Let yourself go, let yourself be carried away in the haunting darkness, where time is suspended.
ENTEN HITTI - 'Via Lattea' LP (ADN) - £18

This new work from ensemble Enten Hitti takes inspiration from research on the "feminine" and from the matrilineal transmission of life. "Via Lattea" is the result of various research trips to the places where the culture of the "sacred female" took shape over 4000 years ago: Cyprus, Crete, Turkey, Ireland, South Africa, and Indonesia. The historical and geographical suggestions have been freely reinterpreted and transformed into musical pieces which, while citing specific musical worlds in some cases, go in the direction of grasping the spirit of the feminine in its universality. "Via Lattea" is a tribute to the feminine quality and to the cults of the Mother Goddess updated with contemporary tools, including overtone singing and two tracks "freely inspired by African initiatory and ritual music". At the same time it is a tribute to the galaxy of which we are part and embodies the ensemble's spiritual quest, suspended between earth and sky. All arranged with the minimal, hypnotic and evocative sensitivity typical of the Enten Hitti style. Ltd x 300 copies.
FRANS DE WAARD - 'Vital - The Complete Collection 1987-1995' Book (Korm Plastics) - £29

Frans de Waard published Vital, a fanzine for electronic and electroacoustic music, from 1987 to 1995. It was a low-budget, Xeroxed publication, bearing the revolutionary instruction: "No Copyright Publication. Reprint Now!". It featured interviews with Asmus Tietchens, O Yuki Conjugate, Merzbow, P16.D4, Pierre Henry, Jim O'Rourke, Brume, Döc Wor Mirran and many others, hosted discussions on copyright, plagiarism and plunderphonics, house music, ambient music, cassette culture and noise, and included contributions from musicians such as Leigh Landy, Godfried Willem Raes, John Duncan, and GX Jupitter-Larsen. Every issue included reviews of cassette releases, LPs, CDs and books. A total of 44 issues were published. Vital moved online in 1995, where it appeared every week since as Vital Weekly. This book is a reprint of all 44 issues and is a lively record of the heyday of cassette culture and industrial music, but also of developments in the wider field of electronic music. A heavyweight gem with Hard Cover designed by Alfred Boland. 580 pages, 18x25cm. Comes with a free bookmark. Essential!!

GARETH DAVIS & MACHINEFABRIEK - 'Lucier: Memory Space' LP (God Records) - £18

Inspired by Sonic Arts Union legend Alvin Lucier (one of the American founding fathers of electroacoustic music, concrete experiments and pioneering advances in field of sound-art/installation), Gareth Davis (bass clarinet) and Machinefabriek (field recordings / processing) have delivered a remarkable album here that is firmly rooted in the organic, eccentric and unfathomable world of electronically manipulated avant-garde, rumbling noise and other fascinating sonic debris. The central concept behind Alvin Lucier's "Memory Space" is the representation of another time and place through the use of a new set of sounds. In his instructions, Lucier asks the performer/s to go to an environment and record by any means (notes on paper, graphics, audio recording or by memory) the sound situations that are present, then, at any later time, in a different space, attempt to recreate that situation.
HIMUKALT - 'Come October' 2 x LP (Tesco Organisation) - £37

"Come October" is the sixth album from Himukalt, the solo project of Nevada-based Ester Kärkkäinen. Originally released as a tape in 2018 (Found Remains), this is the first time on vinyl for the album, and comes with additional 3 tracks based upon source material from the Come October sessions, making up the entire second platter. Remastered for vinyl by Grant Richardson. "With a sound that is rough and decidedly gritty, the analogue derived tones are soot and rust infused, while the vocals feature as emotional and bile drenched (aka echo distorted / treated). Minimal structure is employed throughout, based around crude abstracted rhythmic programming , choppy static, shuddering distortion and occasional tonal blasts, but the end result is an industrial noise 'post-mortem' style than anything typically of a harsh noise variety. The minimalist approach to sound and composition gives a clear nod to the likes of the psychological and death obsessed sounds of Atrax Morgue, while the sonic treatment of vocals renders them for tonal impact rather than decipherable intent... a liberating release" (Noise Receptor). Ltd x 300 copies in a sumptuous gatefold sleeve, with download card.
HYDRA ENSEMBLE - 'Águas' CD (Cylinder Recordings) - £12

On 31st January 2022, Hydra Ensemble performed at De Pletterij in Haarlem (NL). Chamber improvisation combining acoustic stringed instruments (Lucija Gregov on cello, Nina Hitz on cello, Gonçalo Almeida on double bass), and live electronics by Rutger Zuydervelt (Machinefabriek). This full concert recording shows the musicians' craftsmanship. It also highlights the fact that a creative electronic engineer does not need the privacy of a recording studio to do his job perfectly. Hydra Ensemble is an electroacoustic quartet based in Rotterdam. Mastered by Dirk Serries (Fear Falls Burning / Vidna Obmana). Digipak with art by Zuydervelt.Watch the performance!
INNERE FRONT - 'The Slow Release' CD (Abreakt) - £10

A compilation of hard-to-find tracks by UK neofolk / noise / ritual electronics act Innere Front that were previously only available on limited edition tape-only and 7" lathe-cut releases 2021-23, all of which are sold out. Sparse melodies over crumbling wood. Decaying frequencies and hoarse vocals. Songs to hunt for company and turn your back unto what can be found. All tracks have been remastered and partially re-arranged for this release. Digipak.
JEAN D.L. / RUTGER ZUYDERVELT - 'Scramblings' CD (Inexhaustible Editions) - £12

Using electric & acoustic guitars and autoharp over spacious electronics and field recordings, Belgium musician and video artist Jean De Lacoste and Rotterdamn sound artist Rutger Zuydervelt (Machinefabriek), create broad pallets of ringing sounds over which acoustic instruments intone, with cellist Fransesco Guerri joining on one of 8 gently unfolding "Scramblings". "This release is both on common ground and a new one. It starts with the hisses, rumbling of objects, a slow strum on the guitar; delicate tension slowly built... The music is all very introspective and quiet [with] odd voices which sound like they're from mission control, and arpeggio keyboards... this combination of expectations and surprises make this into a most wonderful record, familiar and slightly strange, but also strongly coherent" (Vital Weekly). Ltd x 300 copies in a 6-panel, matt-finish digipak.
MACHINEFABRIEK With ANNE BAKKER - 'Wisps' MCD (Self-Released) - £9.50

A follow-up to the 2020 album "Oehoe" from Machinefabriek and Anne Bakker. Bakker recorded violin, viola and vocal improvisations... gorgeous sounds and melodies; a gold mine for Machinefabriek to work with. Rutger then started editing and adding electronics. "I always found the music that Anne and I make a bit pastoral, or eerie. Thinking about a title, will-o'-the-wisp came to mind, a ghost light in folklore. It fits the elusive quality of the music, I believe". 28 mins. Presented in a sealed card wallet with cover art collage by Wytske van Veen.
MACHINEFABRIEK With MONIKA BUGAJNY - 'Recytle' CD (Self-Released) - £11

Works for clarinet, reinterpreted by Monika Bugajny, reworked by Rutger Zuydervelt in spring 2023. A mutual introduction by Gareth Davis led to Machinefabriek reworking one of her beautiful clarinet recordings into a ghostly one-minute piece for his album "+". Monika then proposed another, more elaborate collaboration. Her suggestion was to use the same working method again, but this time with classical pieces as a starting point... Debussy, Messiaen, Brahms, Stravinsky... Monika reinterpreted eight classical pieces, beautifully played and recorded. Machinefabriek then stacked, cut, and manipulated the material into the tracks you'll find on "Recytle". Moody and woozy clarinet / electronics vignettes, evoking haunted landscapes; an intriguing counterpoint to their originals. Presented in a sealed card wallet.
MACHINEFABRIEK / MATT WAND / NICK STORRING / PHIL MAGUIRE - 'Prisma+' CD (Self-Released) - £10

Originally a standalone digital-only track, 'Prisma' (2021) was a successful rhythmical experiment. Wanting to expand the ideas already encapsulated in these 17 minutes, Rutger Zuydervelt (Machinefabriek) asked artists he highly admired to create a reworking of the piece. Matt Wand (Stock, Hausen & Walkman), Nick Storring (Picastro), and Phil Maguire all did an amazing job with their highly idiosyncratic takes on 'Prisma', resulting in the ambient / electronica / experimental collection here - 'Prisma+'. Mastered by Jos Smolders (THU26). Presented in a die cut black paper wallet, with full colour sticker.
MACRONYMPHA - 'Amplified Humans' CD (Freak Animal) - £11.50

"Amplified Humans" was among very first Industrial Recollections CDs, published at a time when the format was somewhat overlooked in scene. The resulting small-edition run has made it hard to find over the years, and it's therefore being reissued once more. Macronympha and their label Mother Savage Noise Productions have an undisputed importance in harsh noise history; yet "Amplified Humans" has a legacy of its own. First issued on tape back in 1997 by the short-lived SE Productions label (Japan) and MSNP (USA) simultaneously, out of countless tape releases, it often gets named among the very best of Macronympha, and even inspired an American noise fest to use it as title for entire festival. If you do not have "Amplified Humans", it's now possible to correct that mistake! Digipak.
MACRONYMPHA - 'Baroque' CD (Freak Animal) - £11.50

Another classic Macronympha harsh noise CD from the mid-90's was also one of the first Industrial Recollections re-issues (2009). First issued on tape back in 1996 by the Less Than Zero label (Italy) and MSNP (USA), this is a Harsh Noise masterpiece by a band that set the standards of genre as we know it now. Macronympha is an American Noise and Power Electronics group formed in 1990 by Joseph Roemer and Rodger Stella in Pittsburgh, PA. Digipak.
MACRONYMPHA - 'Membranes And Black Holes' CD (Freak Animal) - £11.50

20 years after the original CD edition (Freak Animal, 2002), which was limited to 500 copies and presented in a 7" B&W sleeve, this album is finally available once again! Presented in a digipak, all the original artwork is shown in full colour for the first time, as with the original hand-made collages. The CD features Macronympha recordings and re-edited collaboration work with Tim Oliveira (Stimbox), and Kimihide Kusafuka (K2). The sound is 100% same as in first edition. Digipak.
RICHARD RAMIREZ / GRUNT - 'Modern Beliefs' CD (Freak Animal) - £11.50

Originally issued on limited LP by Freak Animal (just 100 copies), this rare 1997 vinyl release is reissued onto CD for the first time. The extended edition release contains an additional 10 minutes of unheard Richard Ramirez (Black Leather Jesus, Werewolf Jerusalem) material which did not fit onto the original LP, plus the collaborative tracks with Grunt are also slightly longer. The artwork, sound and spirit remains faithful to the original LP, even if the CD format allowed for the additional material / length for a new 52-minute duration! Digipak.
RUTGER ZUYDERVELT - 'Kaleiding' CD (Self-Released) - £11

Kaleiding is the debut show of the contemporary circus company Lily&Janick. It is a play between light, reflections and new perspectives onto partner acrobatics. With a long mirror that lays on the floor, images are created that hypnotize - like watching an everyday life situation through a kaleidoscope. This distorted reality invites the spectator into a decelerated world where up is down and down is up. Kaleiding is a movement-based show working on the border between dance, circus and visual arts. Fitting with the performance structure, the music score / sound design created Mar-Jun 2023 by Rutger Zuydervelt (Machinefabriek) opens with a contemplative slowly-evolving ambient piece, moving into weird techno territory (think James Holden), towards a noisier abstract soundworld. Presented in a sealed card wallet.

TUNGU - 'Predictability Failure' CD (ADN) - £12

Ukrainian Sergey Senchuk began recording using the name Tungu with his debut "Opus Hereticus" (2013). Using field recordings, cut ups, samples and live instruments, he released four subsequent albums, and now presents "Predictability failure", which was recorded and mixed with avant-garde artists from all over the world. These 16 "duets" with known and lesser-known artists, creates an interesting blend between experimentation and engaging atmospheres. 16 "electronic bagatelles" with a great variety of instruments (real and sampled) that reveal the brightness of Tungu's inspiration. Many of the artists are "improvisers" but their contributions are perfectly set in this interesting sound tapestry: Amy Denio (Kultur Shock, Eye Music), George Cartwright (Curlew), Mia Zabelka (Ensemble MIA), Ron Anderson, Mark Feldman, Takayuki Hashimoto (.es), Éric Normand (Le GGRIL), to name but a few. UMPIO - 'Brain Pain' CD (Freak Animal) - £11.50

A fresh chunk of mortar in the never-ending beaver's dam of junk electronics noise. Processing of junk, solo spring, reaktor manipulations, modular electronics, advanced but also crude and in-your-face harsh noise, and stink. "Just stick your tongue on the soldering iron of the big piezo in the sky and watch your face being ripped off by these frequencies of hi-speed impact. Only the best cassettes were cannibalized for this 2 meter long joint". Umpio is multi-instrumentalist Pentti Dassum who hails from Pori, Finland. Digipak.

DAVID ELLIOTT - 'Neumusik - The Complete Edition' Book (Korm Plastics) - £23

This excellent book contains all six issues of the Neumusik fanzine which David Elliott edited between 1979-82 while at university. The 'zine focused on European, electronic and experimental music which had come out of krautrock, French progressive rock and the more esoteric side of British post-punk. David travelled extensively meeting musicians in Germany and France, and for a year was based in Strasbourg. The interviews and articles feature Conrad Schnitzler, Richard Pinhas, Asmus Tietchens, United Dairies, Vangelis, Florian Fricke, Chris Carter (an interview just as Throbbing Gristle were splitting up), and so much more. Most issues were 60-80 pages long so, together with new text and photos, this compendium weighs in at a chunky 425 pages. It also touches on the parallel YHR label. Soft cover, 17x24cm. Comes with a free bookmark. • All Books

KNOTWORK - '3 x 3' 7" (Storm) - £9

Traditional tunes and songs by Michael Moynihan (Blood Axis), Don Schabner and Annabel Lee (Blood Axis). Intertwining knotwork patterns run throughout ancient Celtic, Norse, and Anglo-Saxon art and ornament, but they are also reflected in traditional poetry and music. In order to explore this musical aspect, Annabel Lee (fiddle) and Michael Moynihan (bodhrán drum, voice) established the acoustic project Knotwork in the mid-1990s. They were soon joined by Don Schabner, a master of multifaceted and driving guitar work. Together these three musicians play songs and tunes of life, death, and struggle. Rustic yet refined, Knotwork creates a symmetry between then and now, Old World and New. The "3 x 3" EP is the group's first release. The A-side, "Heenan and Sayers", is a broadsheet ballad recounting a true tale in epic style: the bloody, bare-knuckle boxing match between John Heenan and Tom Sayers that took place in Farnborough, England in 1860. Lasting 42 rounds, the fight carried on for two-and-a-half hours before it was finally shut down by the police. The B-side offers the energetic Norwegian fiddle tune "Kvernknurren (The Mill Sprite)" and a live version of the grim ballad "Twa Corbies"performed at a Midwinter 2013 concert in Brooklyn, NY. An enchanted equation, "3 x 3" is more than the sum of its parts. Ltd x 250 copies on black vinyl.

NURSE WITH WOUND - 'Alas The Madonna Does Not Function' Picture Disc LP (United Dirter) - £27

1988 saw the release of several timeless and remarkable EPs from Nurse With Wound. One of those classics is "Alas The Madonna Does Not Function". In some respects this was a turning point for NWW - it's a record that whilst unmistakably retaining their ineffable character brought rhythmic and almost 'musical' elements into play. "Madonna" could be seen along with the "Soresucker" and "Cooloorta Moon" EPs as the bridge between the old and the new; the natural precursors to "Thunder Perfect Mind" and "Rock 'n Roll Station". Some 34 years later "Madonna" still sounds fresh and unique; a true one off, proving NWW to be one of the few genuinely enduring and uncompromising artists of their time. Added to this re-issue is the fan favourite 'I Am The Poison'. With its plodding cyclical bass, minimalist sound and distorted vocal lines, it could be argued that 'I Am The Poison' is a forgotten, yet divergent, post punk classic. Beautifully remastered by Andrew Liles, this arrives in a stunning die-cut sleeve with Babs Santini artwork.
SHOCKCITY / THE GREY WOLVES - 'Blood & Sand (Relaunched)' CD (Old Europa Cafe) - £12

Presented for the first time here is a completely re-mixed stereo version of the original 1990 tape release from two UK Industrial units - Shockcity and The Grey Wolves - curated by "Mel H / Head in a Haunted Hat". Two long tracks bringing back memories of what the then-raging Gulf War was like: burning oil wells, helicopters, long lines of burning vehicles, masks to protect from smoke and sand, air bombings, operation desert storm. Do not expect simple noise - this album contains extreme electronics, mixed with dark ambient rumblings, the sound of armoured helicopters and military transmissions. Digipak with new artwork.
ENTRE VIFS - 'Art Of Noises - 110th Anniversary' LP (Aussaat) - £23

The brand new LP by French Bruitist / Noise legend Entre Vifs! "At a time when so many artists, from both the pop and punk scenes, discover themselves a "Bruitist" past overnight, ENTRE VIFS wanted to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the genuine The Art Of Noises (Luigi Russolo), in the form of an LP presenting an unreleased extract from our last improvised "home session" before our 2019 public concert in Paris. An 8-page booklet summarizes the aesthetic journey of our Bruitist Ensemble in the form of excerpts from the manifestos that have marked its existence since its origins. Those who see most clearly into the future are those who create it. Creation is not a reshaping of materials from the past from which novelty would "emerge" as if by magic, it is the future that attracts us to it and makes us realize it". "It's chaotic, rhythmic, loud, uncontrolled and not your usual noise. Very industrial, with the sound of cogwheels crushing metal plates; this is indeed the true art of noise music" (Vital Weekly). Presented in a striking metallic sleeve.
DAPALIS SEPOLCRI - 'Tehom' CD (Dozlethal Propaganda) - £12

French Ritual Dark Ambient entity Dapalis Sepolcri returns with "Tehom". Still 30 metres under the Parisian soil, this time it's from the sky that we follow the corridors of the forbidden catacombs; from one room to another, through stale water, until we reach our final destination: La Licorne. There only candle lights split the darkness, the smell of ossuaries has never been so present. "Now close your eyes and look: you're 30 metres underground, you've been walking for 15 straight hours in full blindness and deafness, crawling inside fissures or into water, without eating nor sleeping, you've absorbed nothing but alcohol, you're dirty and in an altered state - all this only to reach a two-century old ossuary where people who came before you made constructions out of bones, some of which are hanging over your head. You turn off your flash-light and your music. You light up candles to illuminate the room. And you eventually sit down within the sacred silence. This is what Dapalis Sepolcri is describing". Digipak.

IKON - 'Love, Hate And Sorrow' 2 x CD (Dark Vinyl) - £15

"Love, Hate And Sorrow" was Ikon's 6th studio album, originally released in 2009 (Apollyon / Nile Records), and is presented here in a newly-remastered version with a bonus 14-track CD of unreleased material and rare B-sides. Ikon are one of the oldest members of the Australian Gothic / New Wave scene. Inspired by bands like Joy Division and New Order, the band started in 1993 and are still active today. Their own mixture of Goth Rock, Post-Punk, Darkwave and Neofolk is as versatile as it is consistent, and band head Chris McCarter has always remained true to himself and his fans. Lineup: Chris McCarter, Dino Molinaro and Anthony Cornish. Ltd x 400 copies in a 6-panel ecopak.

GIANLUCA BECUZZI - 'Black Mantra' 2 x CD (St.An.Da / Silentes) - £15.50

Kali, "The Black-One", is the Hindu goddess of death, time, supreme power, destruction and change. She is dark and heartless, the anti-mother with a bloodied face. She is "The One Who Dances", leading the world towards dissolution, end and rebirth. The origins of the Thug clan, stranglers known for their ritual murders, are linked to this karmic cycle. Since the last century, her mysterious charm has inspired literature and cinema, making her a popular figure also in the Western world. Just as, more generally, Indian mysticism and its traditional music, based on the sound continuum, is origin and source of inspiration for all Drone Music and for musical avant-gardes linked to it. This double album of tribal drone / doom features Gianluca Becuzzi (Kinetix, Limbo) on electric baritone guitar, aluminium neck guitar, aluminium neck bass VI, sampling, and programming, with Antonio Tonietti on Indian harmonium, modified acoustic guitar, and bouzitar. Ltd x 200 copies in a 6-panel digisleeve with photography by Stefano Gentile.
AJNA - 'Inevitable Mortality' 2 x CD (Zoharum) - £15

"Inevitable Mortality" was originally released in a microprint of just 50 x CDR copies thanks to Reverse Alignment. This double CD-proper edition contains the same material, and is extended by another 6 hitherto unpublished compositions, created in the same period. Thanks to this, the album sounds coherent and is a great complement to the discography with a position that has been difficult to obtain until now. An absolute must have for listeners who like to lose themselves listening to dark ambient music of the highest quality. "Inevitable Mortality" was created in a rather interesting period of the U.S. musician, just ahead of the release "Black Monolith" - a collaboration with Dronny Darko, which established the position of both artists on this scene. AJNA has since cooperated with renowned Dark Ambient labels Winter-Light, Cryo Chamber, and Cyclic Law. Mastered by Chris Sigdell (B°TONG). Ltd x 300 copies in a 6-panel ecopak.
L'ECLIPSE NUE - 'Degradation Bliss' LP (Love Earth Music) - £20

New studio album - and first vinyl release - from the American industrial noise unit with its origins in Tokyo. "The sound from beginning to end has the massiveness you're looking for in noise, especially when it's on vinyl... It's harsh; it's noisy as hell, and there are constant changes everywhere. But for example, the use of vocal / samples in "Temple of Deformed Deities" and the rhythmic inclination through the use of percussive sounds creates maybe a bit of a ritual atmosphere while not being tribal or ritual at all. And it's a complete contrast to the 3m30 noise wall "Night Drive", which is still on the same side. And the reverse side shows even more dynamics; "Exile in Ghetto Estatic" starts as an ultra-heavy noise drone and suddenly breaks down completely. The spaciousness that Daniel creates through this proves that extreme noise can be silence too. And to top it off, well, I won't use the word 'commercial', but if ever a noise track deserved to become a hit single, "Sister Went Dancing" comes as close as it gets. No, you can't dance to it, but we all know how the right track on the right volume triggers an inner rhythm that makes us move to things others can't hear" (Vital Weekly). Mastered by Grant Richardson (Gnawed).
