We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dave Ball, who we worked with a number of times over the years. Sincere condolences to Marc, and to Dave's family.
He was a formidable musician in Soft Cell, The Grid and on the beautiful "Photosynthesis" collaboration with Jon Savage (Cold Spring, 2016).
Reading his profound words and listening to the botanically-inspired music, we like to imagine him still sitting in that sunny garden...

After the ground-breaking release of 1990's "Love's Secret Domain" album, Coil were not dormant; the main project was "Backwards", which was started in 1992, updated considerably between 1993 and 1995, and transferred in 1996 to New Orleans, where it was finished in the magic of the Nothing studios of Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails). The album saw the fruition of Jhonn Balance's recent vocal coaching, producing haunting, passionate vocals, while reaching new heights.
23 years after its initiation, these tracks have been beautifully preserved by Danny Hyde and are finally available in highest quality audio. Differing substantially from the later, remixed incarnation, "The New Backwards" (2008), "Backwards" contains the original versions of Coil's much-loved tracks; 'A Cold Cell' and 'Fire Of The Mind', which have appeared on various compilations over the years, and are now presented as originally intended.

"Underneath The Earth" is the debut album from Chimehours; a hauntological music project for the dislocated present day. Taking inspiration from Max Porter's novel "Lanny", the album digs into themes of nature, myth and community, with an edge of folk-horror.
Drones, drums and gritty guitars are juxtaposed with woodwind, strings and ethereal song. Written and produced between Derbyshire, London and Margate, the album takes musical influence from the likes of Liz Fraser, Broadcast, Beth Gibbons, Bibio and Jóhann Jóhannsson, and atmospheric cues from The Wickerman, The Fog, and Enys Men.
Chimehours is a collaboration between Beck Goldsmith and Jon Dix. The pair have previously performed in bands together and composed music for award-winning film and television. They conjured up this foray into cinematic, horror-flecked contemporary-folk to explore their love of the supernatural and the other-than-human.
Chimehours raid the vaults of 70's British cinema and trad folk soundscapes to riff on contemporary anxieties and ecological yearning. A deep reworking of Llyn Y Cwn's "Megaliths" (2024). The original was a profound dark ambient exploration of the sacred resonance embedded within stone circles; "Megaliths In Dub" is the echo beneath the surface, the unheard rhythm that has always been there.
The megaliths stand - timeless, unyielding. Their histories stretch beyond recorded memory, their presence imbued with silent narratives of the land. "Megaliths" sought to channel this ancient energy into pure sound. Yet no history exists without its counterpart - no creation without its shadow.
On "Megaliths In Dub", suppressed tempos emerge, pulsing with the primal force of forgotten rites. Guitar invocations from the live rituals weave through the fabric of the album, distorting and reshaping the familiar, exquisite dark ambient Llyn Y Cwn has become renowned for.
It is a sonic metamorphosis - a spectral reflection of the megalithic presence.
The stones have been disturbed.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - 'Decoder'

Released on standalone CD for the first time in 33 years, this now-complete edition of the ground-breaking, legendary soundtrack is finally here.
A cult classic of sci-fi dystopia, "Decoder" (1984) saw EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN's members working alongside GENESIS P-ORRIDGE (THROBBING GRISTLE / PSYCHIC TV) and WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS. It's one of the strangest (and most prescient) films of the decade. The film was made in Hamburg and Berlin, and directed by Klaus Maeck 'Muscha' (who directed several punk films).
The lead roles are played by Christiane F and FM Einheit from Neubauten, who also contributed to the film's score. Genesis P-Orridge, the kingpin of the English industrial scene, also appears as a priest of the Black Noise faith. Author William S. Burroughs portrays an insurrectionist salesman of audio equipment (and contributes spoken word to the soundtrack), and American cult actor Bill Rice plays a detective.
SOFT CELL contributed their classic 'Seedy Films', while MATT JOHNSON from THE THE wrote a frenetic, deformed song for the film that is both fantastic and painful to listen to, and EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN's 'Compressed Metal' is sublime. Dave Ball (SOFT CELL), Jon Caffery and Genesis P-Orridge composed the rest of the soundtrack.
A futuristic film, and a joyous application of William S. Burroughs' "The Electronic Revolution", which proposes a seditious and rather poetic method of subverting the masses and inciting them to rise up against the forces of order.

Illustrious Company presents... Mesmerine 111™. This is a 3D soundscape based on / inspired by the frequency 111Hz, which has been historically and scientifically proven to induce a trance-like state.
Findings of MRI scans suggest that at exactly 111hz, the brain switches off the prefrontal cortex, deactivating the language centre, and temporarily switches from left to right-sided dominance, which is responsible for intuition, creativity, holistic processing, inducing a state of meditation or a trance.
These findings have been confirmed by archeo-acousticians in studies regarding ancient and Neolithic shamanistic burial rituals around the world. The title is a take on the use of sound as pharmacology (Mesmerine is the name of an imaginary drug). ...
The soundscape of the ambient Dose 1 is 50 minutes in duration - long enough to induce a true trance-like state. Dose 2 continues with a calming and unctuous vocal mix performed by Charles Stooke. Bringing to mind HAL 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey), the sound is simultaneously reassuring and disquieting.

The complete recordings of the legendary Marc And The Mambas run of three live performances given at The Duke Of York's Theatre in London's West End in 1983. Restored from the original VHS tape recordings made by the late Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson (Throbbing Gristle, Coil), these remain the only recordings that exist of Marc And The Mambas performing live.
Originally released in 2012 on Marc Almond's (Soft Cell) own Strike Force Entertainment label as a CD/DVD set (long sold out), this edition, presented on vinyl for the first time, contains the 17 tracks from the SFE CD release, expanded to include the two bonus DVD-only tracks: 'Près Des Ramparts De Séville' and 'Jacky'. Completely remastered for vinyl by Martin Bowes (The Cage Studios).

Unavailable for almost 30 years in its own right, this collection from the Cold Spring archive has been remastered / repackaged with new art. This classic album exists as a document of the soundtrack work PSYCHIC TV created for the many films and videos of Derek Jarman. Another demonstration of why PSYCHIC TV were one of the most important groups in the world.
The titular track, 'Prayer For Derek', is intended as an invocationary prayer, based on Tibetan rituals; a collage of sounds including field recordings of the lulling waves running aground on the shingle beach opposite Jarman's Prospect Cottage in Dungeness, Kent alongside bird song, crying babies, and massed ritualised chants to aid the late film director in his after-life journeys.
Other tracks feature elongated drones, washes of dissonance, melancholic guitar chime, evocative piano scoring, Burroughs cut-ups, gothic chants, and familiar snarling dogs.

An aural exploration of the solar system using data from NASA's probes.
On the latest album by Sonologyst, raw data from radio waves, electromagnetic fields, and plasma fluctuations, utilising data sonification files provided by NASA, are transformed into a haunting soundscape, unveiling the ambient music of planets, solar winds, and the cosmic beyond.
As the newest addition to Sonologyst's series of sonic documentaries, this work deepens his exploration of the sonic spectrum, converting cosmic phenomena into immersive auditory experiences.

 COLIN ANDREW SHEFFIELD - 'Serenade' LP CLEAR (Elevator Bath) - £22
Jagged audio collages which shift from blurry abstractions to choppy sound art to mournful plundered passages, always with the singular stylistic approach the composer has developed over the last 25+ years of activity.
In these dense new compositions, hidden details come into relief as loops develop and morph while elusive melodies emerge from the mist before vanishing into thin air.
With a DIY aesthetic at its heart, the characteristic looseness of these pieces could be attributed to Colin Andrew Sheffield's use of vintage sampling hardware, but the presence of imperfect loops and rough textures was also a conscious decision.
In bending found sounds to his will, creating a certain ambiance of open-ended intrigue, he describes a hazy landscape - flecked with distant clouds and obscure lights in the sky; a paean for the inexplicable.

 CONCEPCIÓN HUERTA - 'Serenade' LP (Elevator Bath) - £20
The first solo vinyl LP from Concepción Huerta (Huerta Ensamble), an artist from Mexico who employs tapes to manipulate recordings of everyday objects and electronic instruments. The fruit of these experimental methods is an intense, heavy take on dark ambient and noise music; a densely atmospheric exploration of sound driven by narrative.
"The Earth Has Memory" was recorded while in residence at Elektronmusikstudion (EMS), Stockholm and fine tuned at UNAM with Olivia Block. Instruments used were primarily the Buchla and the Nord, which were then processed via magnetic tape, lending a tactile, organic quality to the work - appropriate as the album tells of a descent to the centre of the earth. Abstract resonances, high-pitched tones, low frequencies, with lurching drones replicate geological movements larger than humanity. "Just via synths and tape treatments, she conjures the depth of the ocean, the solidity of the earth, and the remnants of the Big Bang" (Brainwashed). Mastered by James Plotkin.  FELICITY MANGAN - 'String Figures' LP CLEAR (Elevator Bath) - £22
A stunningly beautiful collection of tactile drones and electronic tonalities infused with natural sounds and rhythms. This is fascinating, emotionally resonant work, novel in its inventiveness and impactful in its delivery.
Created in the summer of 2024, the pieces sample and combine the resonant timbres of strings and electromagnetic textural fields with field recordings from wetlands. These elements were shaped through digital processing into polyphonic, angular assemblages.
Austere minimalism, found sounds, gorgeous drones, electronic tones, elegiac ambient and pulses offer a superb example of Felicity Mangan's singularity.

Originally released on the cult label Misty Circles (LP Ltd 300 copies, 1993), this expanded edition of Gerstein's classic album is released for the first time after 32 years - and as a celebration of 40 years of the band. "A prism of stylistic eclecticism that adds new narrative ideas to the already dense soundscape created at the time by the author. Avantgarde rock, artwave, darkwave, neofolk and pianistic breath are the main aesthetic dictates that connote the dreamy maps of the work, alternating moods and psychological tears dissimulated in the texts. Music and words that paint the chiaroscuro of life and renew questions about the fragility of the human condition" (Rockerilla). Gerstein here was: Maurizio Pustianaz. All the tracks have been cleaned, remixed and remastered from the original 4 tracks tape masters. The same process was carried out for the 10 bonus tracks. "Ashes Of Divinity is an incredible split offering from Colombia's Emme Ya (Edgar Kerval) and Canada's Kemet (Mo Massaya, who also records as Sublimatio Mortis with Undirheimar). From the ashes, the phoenix awakens. From pain, divinity is born. The initiate walks between two shores, standing before eternity. As above, so below. Sound becomes fire, silence becomes flame. Czech Noisecore legends P.T.A.O. (Pár Tecek A Otazník... or "...?") have been destroying speakers and giving people headaches since the 90s. Here, they pair up for a second time with Sedem Minút Strachu, contenders for the new noisiest band in Europe, delivering hundreds of tuneless grind / noisecore tracks, probably, in less than 11 minutes. Sometimes structured, but always free of melody, you can expect nothing less (or more) than pulverizing noisecore insanity. P.T.A.O.'s releases are pretty sporadic, bizarre and sought after, so get on this. Ltd x 500 copies. |
 RICK REED - 'The Symmetry of Telemetry' LP (Elevator Bath) - £20
Electronic musician Rick Reed, arguably the linchpin of Austin TX's experimental scene for the past few decades, presents his first new release since 2018. He employs Buchla and Moog synthesizers, organ, vocoder, and found radio sounds. "I've long been fascinated by the radio but usually more atmospheric blasts like shortwave static, rather than accidental juxtapositions of ironic voices or music". Reed combines these disparate elements into tightly organised audio collages, resulting in new stories conveyed as highly distinctive, personal electronic music.
Side A is an atmospheric rumination on the lethargy so prevalent during the early days of the pandemic. Tinged with melancholy, it is an occasionally serene but deceptively complex study. Side B kicks off with 'Space Age Radio Love Song', a dense pastiche of Buchla bleeps and bloops with frequent radio interruptions and a ring-modulated vocal coda. The record ends with the moody 'Leave A Light On For Tony', dedicated to the great artist of light projections, Tony Martin, who passed away the same day Reed finished this piece. "Radio waves, choirs and orchestras haunt these grooves like spectral homeowners" (A Closer Listen).  SEQUENCES - 'Água Viva' CD (Elevator Bath) - £11.50
The basis for this album were field recordings captured by Sequences (aka Niels Geybels, also of False Moniker) during his extensive travels, featured within the first four pieces in varying degrees of prominence. The second half of the album deconstructs the atmospheres of the first, using the essence of these pieces as the point of departure for new studies in mysterious ambiance.
Dreamlike and exploratory in nature, as evidenced by the other audio components (magnetophone, zither, modular synthesizer, and guitar), this is an album of interpretations and ruminations; a potent reminder of the power of living water.
Borrowing the title and inspiration from Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector's experimental novel from 1973, "Água Viva" is an album as idiosyncratic and poetic as its namesake. The eight tracks (each a highly evocative short story unto itself) were titled after text found in Lispector's book, and each exists as an impression of the ideas found within.

 SUSANA LÓPEZ - 'Materia Vibrante' LP (Elevator Bath) - £20
Small sounds and huge drones populate the surrealistic landscape of "Materia Vibrante", Susana López's gorgeous new album - her first on vinyl. Extraordinarily evocative, this LP is filled with detail and emotive tranquillity, while occasionally swelling with the intensity of a raging sea. Surely her most elegant and finely hewn work to date, "Materia Vibrante" offers a fully enveloping sonic meditation from Susana López (aka Susan Drone).
The album was built from field recordings captured at megalithic sites in Ireland, underwater sounds recorded with hydrophones in the rivers of Asturias, and electromagnetic wave scans from Birmingham. These sonic landscapes are interwoven with synthesizers, digital harmonium, experimental "sonic triangle", multi-effects, percussion, and her voice, serving as a thread between the inner and the outer worlds. "These feel like decidedly unearthly elements, which carries over into the sound perfectly. Darkwave Art with Spiritual Esoteric themes. Svepna is an evolution of an old band named Utvar (2011-2024) that had been well known to the audience as atmospheric post-Black Metal. Svepna is its spiritual and artistic successor transmitting the sorrowful splendor through shoegaze / dark rock / Goth vibes. The lyrical themes (mainly in their native tongue, Serbian) are deeply personal and represent the results of alchemical transformation on different levels of being throughout the years. Svepna's visual identity reflects the interplay of inner light and darkness, reflecting the same essence that is present in all of their projects (for example Plamen Vecnosti). The form of expression may differ, but the core always remains the same, letting the Otherness reveal its unseenness.

A sporangium (from Ancient Greek sporá 'seed' and angeîon 'vessel') is an enclosure in which spores are formed. It can be composed of a single cell or can be multicellular. Virtually all plants, fungi, and many other groups form sporangia at some point in their life cycle. Sporangia can produce spores by mitosis, but in land plants and many fungi, sporangia produce genetically distinct haploid spores by meiosis. "Sporangium" is the brand new album of "Merzsoniks" from the Japanese Noise master, made using handmade instruments / contact microphones / various fuzz / distortion / glitch pedals / synthesizer... and many other soft & hard-ware to be discovered...  MICHAEL CASHMORE - 'The Ninth Circle Beyond The Sun' CD (Lumberton Trading Company) - £11.50
The latest album from Michael Cashmore (Nature And Organisation, and the main guitarist and composer for CURRENT 93 from 1990 until around 2006) collects ten pieces which, as with "Until The End Of Vibration" (2024), draw from that magical place where crepuscular and moody soundtrack work converges with the kind of synth lines Tangerine Dream made a name for themselves with. Along the way, there are piano-led melodic swells, a couple of surprisingly serrated edges and sparingly used percussion veering between the bombastic and more emotionally charged. Between each of the compositions, there's an overarching sense of sadness or resignation while carefully woven refrains point to the simple beauty one derives from staring at a night sky or the sun's rise or setting over a serene sea apparently untouched by man.
Sophisticated yet unostentatious, this is music that's bold, minimal and utterly deserving of the attention of the film that will doubtlessly play out in your head as you lock yourself in to everything it promises. Digipak. |
 CAPRICORNI PNEUMATICI - 'Variants' CD (ADN) - £12
"Variants" is a new chapter of Capricorni Pneumatici - an esoteric post industrial project that started in Italy during the 90's. First of all you will be caught by the "pleasant" cover recalling Flemish painter Hieronymus Bosch. You may see it as an introduction to the dark disquieting spaces crossed by CP during the 7 lengthy tracks of this work (ranging from 5 to 18 minutes). The sound generated by live electronics, percussion and treated guitars subtly flows from one track to the other trying to overcome the opacity of the world of shadows with intense and incisive layers that bring the listener to concentrate his attention on this minimalist experience leaving out the external world. This opus was created in hot summer of a hot city like Milano but has the winter climate of Northern Europe in it. Digipak.

A new joint release from the British band RAPOON (Robin Storey, Reformed Faction, ex-Zoviet France) and American band PAS MUSIQUE (led by Robert Pepper), who have collaborated several times over the last decade, including their union as Old Castle with Shaun Sandor (Promute). "Knowledge Has No Enemies But The Ignorance" features thirteen lengthy compositions, totalling over two hours, filled with dark ambient structures, a psychedelic-drone aura, and numerous improvised fragments. It seems the two gentlemen have found a common language, one based on years of experience in experimental music and revealing their shared roots and inspirations, which can undoubtedly be found on this album. Dedicated to U.S. actress, artist, magickian and occultist Marjorie Cameron (1922-1995), a contemporary of Aleister Crowley and Jack Parsons, who regarded herself as a living incarnation of the Thelemic goddess Babalon. 73 mins. Well crafted, atmospheric soundscapes on the industrial side - macabre dark ambient, industrial sound collages, sometimes rhythmic and droning, sometimes experimental. Are Mundal has written songs for albums such as Enslaved's "Isa" and Immortal's "All Shall Fall", but is probably best known for his photography of Fantoft stave church on the day it burnt down in 1992. A medieval fever dream through haunted chambers and old crypts. "Whispers resound through the blackened halls of forgotten dominions, where the Nine Lands of Oblivion lie shrouded in endless shadow. This chamber of sound unveils the music of silence and ruin, a procession of echoes carried through desolate corridors, cloaked in arcane dust and dim candlelight. Inanis Yoake is back after a two-year hiatus with their third album, "Shallow Mist". A dark and sinister thread unites every one of the 12 songs of the album leading to an introspective trip of the duo. Simone Skeleton and Risa Hara who composed and performed all the songs, (vocals, lyrics, synths, piano, drums and strings arrangements) showcase a compelling fusion of Postpunk, Darkwave, Synthwave, blended accurately and originally; there are no boundaries in their experimentations like in the closing track 'Down Here' with elements of noise rock and psychedelic folk, one of their darkest songs, or 'I've Done Everything I Can', 'The Dismal Sea' and the title track with an electro industrial feel.  OPEN TO THE SEA - 'Watering Paper Flowers And Snakes' 2 x CD (ADN) - £14.50
Open To The Sea is the collaboration between Italian artists Enrico Coniglio (Lemures, Aqua Dorsa), Matteo Uggeri (Sparkle In Grey), and Saverio Rosi. The project is characterised by the fusion of gentle and minimalist melodies with electronic elements and field recordings, crafting a unique orchestral arrangement. "Watering Paper Flowers And Snakes" is a double CD featuring reissues and curiosities. The first disc is a reissue of the album "Watering Paper Flowers", originally on Fluid Audio in a extremely limited art edition on double mini CDR.
The second disc includes a collection of unreleased tracks and reworks by Uggeri, Coniglio and Rosi, forming a sort of pastiche of exuberant and colourful pieces, always teetering between different musical genres and blending unconventional influences.
Everything remastered in 2024 by Fabio Ricci.
