• AMPH - 'Control' LP

After 4 years of silence, Swedish textural noise / drone duo Amph return a fantastically absorbing LP. As ever, a slow dissonance and growing tension is formed by the use and abuse of magnetic tape. Suggestive backward pulses, cumulative sound-rustle and overlapping psychedelic looping are the main ingredients. Despite the occasional hissy and rumbling nature of these recordings this is a fairly fine-tuned album, slightly less chaotic with a clear flow overall, but with the stirring sense of compositional skill intact. Ltd x 223 copies.

"...the first track features a ritual tinged industrial throb, deep heaving breathing textures, shimmering micro-tonal textures, and disembodied garbled but unintelligible vocals... the track becomes more mid-tone drone oriented, but this is also underscored with looped field recordings, creaking wood and metal which coalesce into quite raucously animated territory, and calms down again through the late section, complete with muted pump organ drone. [on] Side B the underlying abstracted field recording elements are looped into subtle rhythmic form. With an open and widescreen production it contains a very organic and rural sonic atmosphere, where wind-chimes and elongated drones maintain a dark edge... it features forceful melodically muted drones, twilight atmospheres, creaking micro-tonal textures and other forceful loops."
