We're extremely proud to announce the first ever release of PITCHSHIFTER's legendary BBC sessions for the late, great John Peel.
These ultra heavy industrial metal tracks were recorded over two sessions at the iconic Maida Vale studios: 28th April 1991 and 30th March 1993 and were sourced directly from the BBC Archives (with thanks), with careful remastering for CD and vinyl.
The 1991 session was recorded during the same period as "Industrial" (Deaf Records / Peaceville), with the 1993 session recorded around the time of "Desensitized" (Earache), with the massive EP "Submit" in between.
"If you look on your PITCHSHIFTER albums you will see that we always credit John Peel. He was instrumental in getting the band out there and often played our music on the radio when no one else dared. The 'Peel Sessions' we did were a great honour and every time I met John he was always such a great guy... a legend" (JS).
Founded in Nottingham in 1989, PITCHSHIFTER's early style was heavy industrial metal, being cited as one of the originators of the genre along with Godflesh - a style which they termed "Death Industrial". These sessions and albums mark the end of that classic period, before a shift towards the more commercial, beat-driven Industrial style from the mid-90's onward that they are still known for.
Line-up: Jon Clayden, Mark Clayden and Jonny Carter, with Stu Toolin ('91), and Dave Walters ('93).

REVIEWS:
"Grinding, slow nightmare fuel... Uncompromising and brutal, the Peel Sessions show the raw beating heart of the band’s early years. Fans who came later may not be familiar with the extreme jackhammer sound that laid the foundation but will recognise the distinct crunch and squealing frustrations of a band that they would lob, Molotov Cocktail-like, at the mainstream during the turn of the century... it should be held up as an example that Pitchshifter earned their stripes carving out dark, extreme music that pushed industrial music forward and breathed new life into the genre" (The Sleeping Shaman)
"Pioneers of the “Death industrial” movement with Godflesh and the like, it was heavy in a way I hadn’t heard before. These three songs (a taster for an EP only phyiscally available at their shows this winter) reflect that period. It's superb. For some of us, this noise—and I mean that with respect—was seminal." (8.5/10, Maximum Volume Music)
"The high technical specification of [BBC's] Maida Vale studios meant that bands always came away with quality recordings that rivalled their own albums. It didn’t take long for Pitchshifter to capture the ear of legendary DJ John Peel who gave them the ultimate seal of approval with a much vaunted session... Picking right up where Godflesh’s Streetcleaner left off, ‘Gritter’ is a truly terrifying piece of music that resets the boundaries of what heavy music can be. Relentless and unremitting... and thanks to John Peel it was broadcast straight into the nation’s homes... if you want to experience the band at their blistering best, here’s your ticket" (Devolution Magazine)
"A showcase of everything that Pitchshifter were about as they blended industrial with sludge and death metal... something for those who love it to really get their teeth into." (Metal Digest)
"In these early sessions, recorded for their champion John Peel, they were threshing across new terrain as avant-garde metal beasts, akin to the likes of Godflesh... this is unremitting, repetitive; skullcrushing, punitive, irresistibly concussive" (Pocket Mags)
