GENESIS P-ORRIDGE & DAVE BALL - 'Imagining October' (Derek Jarman) O.S.T.
12" Etched £18 - out 23rd September

The first ever release of the soundtrack to the rarely-seen DEREK JARMAN 1984 short film "Imagining October", with music recorded by Derek's friend and collaborator Genesis P-Orridge (PSYCHIC TV / THROBBING GRISTLE), and Dave Ball (SOFT CELL / THE GRID). Recorded at DJM recording studios in Theobalds Road, London.
Limited Edition 12" vinyl featuring a beautiful etched B-Side. Features liner notes by James Mackay (Jarman's producer, collaborator and archivist).
Derek Jarman put together a programme of films for the London Film Festival, reflecting the cutting edge of the London avant-garde of the time. Recorded at the same time as "The Angelic Conversation", "Imagining October" was filmed in the Eisenstein Museum in Moscow, Vladimir Mayakovsky's grave at Novodevichy Cemetery, the GUM department store facing red square, and the fire temples of Baku in Azerbaijan. The painting sequences with a group of soldiers (Angus Cook, Stephen Thrower (COIL), Peter Doig and Keir Wahid) was filmed in London. Jarman considered it one of the best, if not the best, of his shorter works. It was intended as an agit-prop work and the combination of music and imagery remains powerful to this day. |
KOLLAPS
- 'UNTIL THE DAY I DIE'
CD £11 - out now! || LP £18 Adv - out 14th October
 CD BLACK LP
"Until The Day I Die", the third album from Australian post-industrial outfit KOLLAPS, is a merciless and visceral assault on the senses and continues the trajectory of the band's idiosyncratic approach in their creation of sound. The album showcases an uncompromising force of harsh post-industrial music narrated by overarching themes of condemnation and redemption; of violence, romanticism, sexuality, and addiction. Much of the creation and lyrical conceptualisation of the record has been stylised and presented using William S. Burroughs' cut-up method.
A wide variety of metals and raw materials were used in the creation of the album including metal grates, a rusted hoist, cement cylinders, field recordings, hammering of various decrepit objects, broken amplifiers, an exposed reverb tank, various synthesizers, and the infamous metal coil; a crudely self-constructed artifice that has become iconic in its use across KOLLAPS' triptych of releases and lengthy touring history.
Mastered by: James Plotkin. Cover artwork: Nullvoid (Thomas Ekelund | Trepaneringsritualen).

Rhythmic industrial noise - grinding and churning, drenched in crushing doom-laden guitars - drapes the sacrificial bones of the new album from esoteric electronic alchemist COLOSSLOTH.
Building on this trademark sound, pushing and striving for reinvention and renewal, Colossloth has also utilised live instrumentation and ethereal vocals, and black metal blast beats on certain tracks for the first time to enhance the intent behind the music. Digitally-driven soundtracks for transfigured cities and myths born in the wilderness of Albion.

Occupying a halfway point between Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire without ever quite sounding like either. One of the most important underground releases of the early 80's.
The debut album "Ceza Evi" - featuring GENESIS P-ORRIDGE and IHAM on Tibetan Thigh-bone Trumpet - was released in June 1983, followed by a special edition later the same year, originally available only to readers of Nanavesh. TenHornedBeast is back to its pounding Doom-Ambient roots and recorded his darkest album yet, as a sonic veneration of a medieval sculpture depicting the torment of the damned in Hell.
Five suitably monolithic pieces form a journey, starting with the first mortal death and ending with the second eternal death of the soul. The darkest textures and heaviest drones are way-markers on this journey; hymns to exalt the scenes shown on the stone.

A SPHERE OF SIMPLE GREEN - 'With An Oblique Glance' CD (Azoth) - £11
A Sphere Of Simple Green is the trio of Adriano Orrù, Silvia Corda, and Simon Balestrazzi. Six years after their debut album "Untitled Soundscapes", they are finally back with a batch of new tracks. Formed in 2010 and mostly devoted to a personal form of non-idiomatic improv, the small ensemble operates intermittently: "The three of us don't play much often together as ASoSG but when it happens new material sprouts up in the most immediate and spontaneous way. We never decide before what to play or how, nor we have an agenda. When we meet we don't talk much about music but about people, books, movies, politics... We belong together in that sort of unassuring freedom given us by the fact that our sound cannot be easily pigeonholed". This new album represents the confluence of three very different paths, three personalities striving for a common ground. The sound architecture swells and unravels with a dense textural interaction between acoustic and electronic sounds, a constant juxtaposition of extended techniques and real time digital processing as if the ensemble was trying to blur the limits of given language and form. Ltd x 200 copies in a gatefold cardboard sleeve with booklet with original art by Paolo Di Orazio. |
BOREDOM KNIFE - 'Epidermis Sessions I' CD (Rural Isolation Project) - £11
Extremely harsh Finnish Noise, relentless and merciless in its entirety. Distressed synth, stained voice, cracked saxophone and flying bits of flaming metal shot through with subterranean feedback worship. "Epidermis Sessions I" is a deep dive into black nightmare psychedelia. Boredom Knife is the ecstatic noise project of Marko Neuman, erupting out of Helsinki. 6-panel digipak. |
CANDOR CHASMA - 'Il Dipinto Ucciso' CD (Azoth) - £11
Two years after "The Key", Corrado Altieri (Uncodified) and Simon Balestrazzi (T.A.C., Candor Chasma, Daimon, Hidden Reverse, Dream Weapon Ritual, Sarang etc) are back with a new album inspired by a novel by horror / "Italian splatterpunk" writer Paolo Di Orazio. Nine Tracks, Nine Advanced Psychedelic Events. "Given their musical origins, it seems obvious for them to draw on the genre proposed by Di Orazio... it's not the first time I've heard that this music is nothing more than psychedelia... we are faced with the successful union between Balestrazzi's atmospheric textures and Altieri's surgical instruments for mutants. Most of the time you breathe stale air in oppressive places, the tension is palpable, the stomach begins to twist and the brain slowly loses its grip on reality. Inevitably, given the object around which the album revolves, there are more aggressive gashes, I imagine precisely managed by Altieri, who often as a sound paste reminds me of Bloodyminded." (The New Noise). Ltd x 200 copies in a gatefold cardboard sleeve with booklet with illustration by Paolo Di Orazio. |
COLD STORAGE - 'Fractures' CD (Rural Isolation Project) - £11
Brutal Harsh Noise from Texas. "One holding up the other, a gaunt figure with rags hanging is retained on a long-term or indefinite basis. Design priorities for inactive data sunken into his pale, bearded face. He was bent over as if by great age. He stank of sweat and blood. When she studied the men approaching her one peered into her face and whispered. The man's feet were bloody; his eyes adrift on a flood-swollen river. Cold storage may include low cost, high capacity and data durability". Digipak with cover art by P. Vantrigt. |
CORRADO ALTIERI - 'Less' CD (Azoth) - £11
For this album Corrado Altieri drops his Uncodified persona and his widely acclaimed bare knuckle noise assaults to undertake a journey across more laid back electronic territories. "Less" offers many multi-coloured facets on the verge between cosmic, not yet pastoral, psychedelia and deep resonating sombre soundscapes tinged with swirling analogue electronics and concrète suggestions. Nine tracks that lay their foundations on analogue pulses, icy deep noise frequencies, soundscapes, and skeletal rhythms. Mastered by Simon Balestrazzi. Ltd x 200 copies in a gatefold cardboard sleeve with booklet with photography by Raimondo Gaviano (Svart1). |
CORRAL SHUT - 'Ramshackle' CD (Satatuhatta) - £11.50
Corral Shut released their debut tape almost a year ago on Satatuhatta and now is the time for their first full-length CD. Those already familiar with the project know what to expect; a rich and uncompromising scrap metal sound. For the newly-acquainted, this is one of the harshest acts in Finland at the moment. Raw, hands down, full bodied junk noise, spliced through tape, with ear-tearing feedback and cone-ripping textures. Mastered by Jaakko Vanhala. Digipak. |
CYESS AFXZS - 'Americhasm' CD (Rural Isolation Project) - £11
Feedback heavy grit Harsh Noise with a keen ear for pace and composition. This is modern noise and experimental electronics music made in Thurgau, Switzerland by way of the hills outside Rome. The sounds on this recording by Cyess Afxzs were produced using homemade shaker boxes with effects, plus zither and clarinet on certain tracks. Cyess Afxzs (Size Affects) are Maria Giuditta Santori, and McCune. 6-panel digipak. |
DIRK SERRIES + ASMUS TIETCHENS - 'Die Höfner Akten' CD (Auf Abwegen) - £12
A new collaborative work by two veterans of the European experimental scene: Dirk Serries (Vidna Obmana / Fear Falls Burning) + Asmus Tietchens (Kontakt Der Jünglinge, Hematic Sunsets, ex-Doc Wör Mirran). Long-time colleagues and friends, Serries and Tietchens have exchanged sound materials to be reworked and published on an on and off basis since the 90's. The improvisations on "Die Höfner Akten" use a Höfner acoustic guitar as the exclusive source material by Serries with its basic structure. Tietchens then reworked source material provided in such a way that the character of his improvisations would remain intact while at the same time expanding the sound palette through further manipulations. "In doing so we hoped the results would sound equally like Serries or Tietchens, or - even better - like none of us" (Asmus Tietchens). "The genius of this album lies in the parallelism, or marriage, between the ectoplasmic non-forms born from Tietchens' radical alteration of the guitar's DNA, and the primordial avatar of the instrument, audibly present in every improvisational fragment by Serries" (Touching Extremes). Ltd x 300 copies in a digipak. |
EN NIHIL / NO VISITORS - 'Measures Of Decay' CD (Rural Isolation Project) - £11
Death Industrial / Harsh Noise split between California's En Nihil (Adam Fritz) and Austin's No Visitors (RIP label boss Matthew Turner). "What did it matter where you lay once you were dead? In a dirty sump or in a marble tower on the top of a high hill? You were dead, you were sleeping the big sleep, you were not bothered by things like that. Oil and water were the same as wind and air to you. You just slept the big sleep, not caring about the nastiness of how you died or where you fell". Cover art by Plague. Digipak. |
HIDDEN REVERSE - 'Six Cases Of Sleep Disorder' CD (Azoth) - £11
Simon Balestrazzi and Massimo Olla join forces once again for a new album that draws inspiration from various forms of sleep disorder. Their surprisingly wide range of weird, unusual and custom built instruments creates a swirling music web that parallel the substance dreams or, better said, nightmares are made of. Hidden Reverse operates in a free and visionary sound territory, on the verge between the outmost leftfield post-industrial and drone music, getting even close to non idiomatic improvisation. Formed in 2015, Hidden Reverse is the duo of Simon Balestrazzi (T.A.C., Dream Weapon Ritual, Candor Chasma, etc.) and Massimo Olla (Noisedelik). The duo plays mostly on self built instruments, especially the [d]Ronin, an acoustic-electric array of strings, springs and metal plates conceived by Olla. Ltd x 200 copies in a gatefold cardboard sleeve with booklet. |
JUGENDWERKHOF - 'Urruin' CD (Rural Isolation Project) - £11
Vicious harsh noise loaded with piercing feedback, recorded live at earsplitting volume in a dank basement somewhere in Berlin. Heavy synth abuse, overblown scrap metal treatment, broken instruments, mangled electronics, and crushing feedback. Jugendwerkhof would kill us all if given half a chance. Jugendwerkhof is a German harsh noise unit formed in 2017 by Insasse M. and Insasse Z. Digipak. |
KAZUMOTO ENDO And SCUM - 'Psychoacoustic Studies + Noise Snippets' CD (Rural Isolation Project) - £11
Utterly ferocious collaboration from two of the finest living practitioners of cut-up Noise coming from Japan. Making noise since the early '90's, Kazumoto Endo is a respected noise veteran and founding member of Killer Bug / RYKE. On this disc Endo supplies the first two lengthy tracks of nauseating harsh noise cut-ups (12 and 13 mins respectively). Relief never comes as the aural battering continues even fiercer on the following 3 tracks from Scum (25 mins). Hurtling onto the scene in 2010, Scum is the harsh noise unit of Sou Inomoto, who is also label boss of Slug Tapes. "Turn that smile upside down". 6-panel digipak. |
KNURL - 'Black Anathema' CD (Rural Isolation Project) - £11
Live 'in studio' album from Canadian junk / extreme harsh noise artist Knurl. All pieces on "Black Anathema" were produced and recorded live by Alan Bloor in April 2022. No editing or post production; all compositions were recorded exactly as they appear in order, and are all first takes. Knurl began in 1994 utilizing found objects such as car springs, scrap metal, saw blades, and other industrial detritus to create the sounds that inspired him while working in welding shops in Windsor, Ontario. Knurl began as an idea to replicate the speed and intensity of grinding metal into a musical project. Digipak. |
MASSIMO OLLA - 'Structures' CD (Azoth) - £11
After four albums as Noisedelik, "Structures" is Italian artist Massimo Olla's first release under his own name. Taking a new path, Olla's goal here is to get maximum results with minimum sound resources, i.e. household objects and self-built instruments. Three elements (wood, plastic, metal) release their energies that turn into sound waves if treated and excited as if having sex, giving shape to seven structures, seven movements, seven episodes, seven journeys, seven dreams, seven nightmares, seven abstract compositions, seven experiments, seven paintings without canvas, seven movies without film, seven books without pages, seven days, seven... Mastered by Simon Balestrazzi. Ltd x 200 copies in a gatefold cardboard sleeve with booklet. |
MOLD - 'Mold' CD (Satatuhatta) - £11.50
Mold is new French-Finnish collaboration by two very distinguishable noise artists known from the projects like H.Ö.H. and Violent Shogun. Together they have produced a very detailed noise album that has the signature sound of both by means of crude tape loops and broken mixers. While not being overly harsh on the surface, it dives into molecular levels of sound, examining the origins of texture and stretching the possibilities of tape magic. Usually, when looked close enough, things are at their roughest and reveal the harsh layers they are made of. Mastered by Jaakko Vanhala. 6-panel digipak. |
SCATHING - 'Scathing' CD (Rural Isolation Project) - £11
CD reissue of this in-the-red brain destroyer from Texas harsh noiser Scathing (Kenny Brieger, also one half of Architeuthis Dux). On this debut, Scathing unleashes a sound that is equal parts caustic and expansive, crashing fervently around the stereo plane. Laden with acute disruptions, the release bristles with energy, championing a cut-up style that favours immediacy over refinement. Recorded and mixed by Brieger in Austin, TX, between 2018-2019. Originally released on cassette tape in 2019 by Idiopathic Records. Mastered by Grant Richardson (Gnawed). Digipak. |
SIMON BALESTRAZZI - 'Asymmetric Warfare' CD (Azoth) - £11
Four long tracks on the new 'glorious' world of modern warfare by the Italian (post) industrial pioneer Simon Balestrazzi (T.A.C., Candor Chasma, Daimon, Hidden Reverse, Dream Weapon Ritual, Sarang and more). Extremely threatening ambient industrial, using audio recordings from middle east conflicts, electric metal plates, metal, wood and plastic objects, and motors, along with various effects and electronic gear to create a scary, distorted, feedbacking form of critical and challenging soundscape. Mastered by James Plotkin. Ltd x 200 copies in a gatefold cardboard sleeve with booklet. |
SIMON BALESTRAZZI - 'Early Recordings (1979-1982)' CD (Azoth) - £11
The material collected on this album unexpectedly resurfaced from a bunch of forgotten tapes stored for decades in an attic. Created by a young Balestrazzi in his late teens, these recordings were realised with rather primitive equipment like cheap reel to reel recorders, radio short wave, abused record players. Tracks 1-5, named "Album Nero" ("Black Album"), was recorded between 1979-1980 and was Balestrazzi's very first foray into industrial music, in an era when industrial and noise music were far from well known or even acknowledged in Italy. The remaining four selections, here labelled as "Early Experiments", make use of some recordings from the same period but were reworked in the following two years. Ltd x 200 copies in a gatefold cardboard sleeve with booklet. |
SIMON BALESTRAZZI - 'Ghost Systems' CD (Azoth) - £11
"Ghost System" is a homage to Earle Brown's 1954 masterpiece "Folio And Four Systems". It was recored while Balestrazzi was stuck in his old and empty family house in the foggy surroundings of Parma. He planned work on a series of background compositions related to time and memories, when Brown's preface to the score sprang to mind. This new album presents Balestrazzi's own heretical take on indeterminacy, bringing to an extreme the process in a twisted and eccentric way. Instead of following the graphic score, this was used as a blueprint to obtain random selections, values, frequency ranges, etc. Some sections from existing recordings of "Four Systems" were excerpted and processed; from extreme time stretching to the convolution of the samples with a random selection of his own sounds (tsymbaly, gongs, amplified objects). The final 7-part composition is enriched by a 15-year collection of field recordings; its haunted atmospheres and foggy droning soundscapes resonating as if coming from a well-hidden otherworldly universe. Mastered by Yvan Battaglia (Carnera, LCHM). Ltd x 200 copies in a gatefold cardboard sleeve with booklet. |
SIMON BALESTRAZZI - 'Redshift' CD (Azoth) - £11
Primitive recordings using self-made instruments and objects resulting in a high-quality album with a strong Z'EV feel; with beautiful roars and gurgling sounds centred on metal. "Formal experiments in modern music and sound art, with the emphasis on percussion. What starts out as rather stark and skeletal set full of rattles and clangs gradually grows more flesh on its bones, with added drones, singing, and more complex layers of vibrated objects and field recordings added to the mix... The vibrated objects, for instance metal bars or pieces of plastic, are sometimes placed on top of the drums for extra resonant properties; the same goes for his voice... a stately drone produced by five loopers comes close to delivering a certain hypnotic effect..." The Sound Projector. Ltd x 200 copies in a gatefold cardboard sleeve with booklet. |
SIMON BALESTRAZZI / NICOLA QUIRICONI - 'Licheni' CD (Azoth) - £11
Balestrazzi and Quiriconi have performed together many times over the last few years both with the deep drone audio / visual project DAIMON, and Balestrazzi guesting on Quriconi's VipCancro emsemble. "Licheni" documents their first meeting as a duo and explores an adventurous sonic territory between free improv and microsound. Balestrazzi has been around for more of three decades painstakingly experimenting in various fields, here his amplified objects and self built instruments are confronted with the angular frequencies of Quiriconi's voice and contact microphones. The overwhelmingly tactile sounds which the duo produces are so finely intertwined that like real life lichens each musician's sound cell and particle needs the presence of the other's to come to life, create dynamics, give way to a dense electroacoustic ecosystem where tiny sound objects, voice and assorted debris are bowed, struck, excited in every possible way. "Licheni" is a journey with no discernible beginning or end, a fertile soil for the growth of new unpredictable sound forms. Ltd x 200 copies in a gatefold cardboard sleeve with booklet. |
TARKATAK - 'I II III IIII' CD (Auf Abwegen) - £12
The four pieces on this album were written during travels, moving between places or being on the move. The first rough sketches were developed further in different situations until they reached the final shape heard on the album. These formations came about after many mood swings and rethinking. Sometimes, the way to the final result was long, depending on the mood in that very moment, while working on the music. The manifestations on the album are four long drone works combining dense layers and textures with haunted voices, field recordings and piano sketches. Truly beautiful and moody. Ltd x 200 copies in a hand-numbered silk screened poster cover with full colour booklet. |
THE RITA - 'The Princesses' MCD (Rural Isolation Project) - £11
The theme of the latest Harsh Noise Wall assault by The Rita (aka Sam McKinlay of Black To Comm, Vice Wears Black Hose) is fallen princesses. The first 15-minute track concerns the tale of Princess Aurora, an impetuous girl fixated on the spindle. She wields it like a scepter as she dances, but pricks her finger and, in a passage reminiscent of the mad scene in Giselle (as well as Nikia's death scene in La Bayadere). She dances brokenly and finally falls down, unconscious. The second 15-minute track concerns Princesse de Lamballe, "a little lady dressed in white". She was dragged into the courtyard, stabbed through and through, mutilated, decapitated. Her head was carried in triumph through Paris on a pike, her heart upon another, her body dragged after. The shrieking mob dressed the head again, rouged the dead lips and cheeks, "for they would carry the prize to Antoinette in her prison, and it was necessary she should recognize her friend". A piece of theatre in itself, all source sounds here are of a woman's body dragged on a tile floor with the participation of Gabrielle Losoncy.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - 'Time Ends - A Tribute to J.G. Ballard's Tetralogy Of Transformation' 2 x LP Yellow (Auf Abwegen / The Epicurean) - £30
Desiderii Marginis, Troum, Martin Bladh (IRM, Skin Area) & Karolina Urbaniak, and Anemone Tube have gathered to pay homage to the first four novels of British writer J.G. Ballard: The Wind From Nowhere, The Drowned World, The Drought, and The Crystal World, which are often seen as disaster novels. Each of the four projects presents a very unique take on the chosen work, using the respective text as a starting point to offer sonic representations of and (further) perspectives on these books, using drones, field recordings, words and much more to create evocative and richly layered soundscapes. Adorned by a painting of German artist Alex Tennigkeit depicting a sphinx-like hybrid creature, a phoenix rising from the ashes of our civilization, the double album also includes an in-depth essay by Michael Göttert (African Paper) on Ballard's works in which he argues that the novels can best be understood as texts of transformation, as well as texts by the sound artists. Mastered by Hunter Barr. Ltd x 250 copies on 'neon yellow' vinyl with printed inner sleeves. |

KINETIX - 'Final Archives' CD (Silentes) - £9
The final chapter for this project of Gianluca Becuzzi, well known for his darkwave project LIMBO and his collaborations with Fabio Orsi. 'Final Archives' is a collection of rare tracks recorded from 1999-2006 totally reworked and remastered in 2009. 'Absolute Grey' is an ambient post-scoring specifically composed for a graphic artwork exhibition. 'RW Materials' is a collection of seven short tracks from the early Kinetix production. Noise gestaltmusic. A multidimensional concept created with sound layers and ambient concretism. 'Resounding Sculptures' is based on the concept of a "composition for blocks of sounds" made in the 50's and 60's by Iannis Xenakis. For this reason, traditional compositional criteria (harmonic-melodic / rhythmic-metric) will replace the various criteria of plastic / spatial forms. |
PAINTING PETALS ON PLANET GHOST - 'Transparent Winter' CD (Silentes) - £7
Painting Petals On Planet Ghost is brothers Maurizio and Roberto Opalio (My Cat Is An Alien), along with Ramona Ponzini (Praxinoscope). The project combines the most lyrical and melodic MCIAA sounds with ancient Japanese poetry as a privileged source of texts to be set to music. PPOPG create some wonderfully fragile and unusual experiments that fall somewhere between folk, psychedelia and drone. Ramona sings in Japanese as well as contributing furin, metal and wooden Japanese wind chimes. These are combined with Maurizio on acoustic guitar, and Roberto on mini keyboard, bodhran, alientronics, and wordless vocalizations. The trio's eclectic setup helps them create some truly luscious and mysterious music that is perfectly fragile, strange, distant and delicate. A mantric gait of ambient atmospheres that interweave introspectively, ghostly reflections on the edge of dream and ancestral memories where emotions re-emerge in an evanescent dimension. 80 ecstatic minutes. |
THELEMA - 'Burnt Memories' CD (Small Voices) - £7
Fourth album from the Italian Neofolk 'n' Pop / Darkwave act. On "Burnt Memories" there are still traces of the past dark atmospheres from their early works. The new album is enriched with gothic / rock sounds as well as industrial influences and a good dose of new pop / folk attitude. 12 Impressive ballads stand for the best and most essential album by Thelema to date. Reminds of Spiritual Front in places. Digipak with booklet. |
TWIST OF FATE - 'September Winds' CD (Silentes) - £9
"Twist Of Fate" is the side project of Giuseppe Verticchio (Nimh, Hall Of Mirrors, Maribor, We Promise To Betray), with the collaboration of Daniela Gherardi. If Nimh represents the most adventurous and droning post-industrial facet of his instrumental explorations, Twist Of Fate follows more melodious and dreamily introspective folk ambient waves. This album is a logical progression from the first release, "Tales From A Parallel Universe" (GS Productions). September Winds" puts the emphasis on semi-experimental and intimate guitar compositions, with some violin lines and discreet treatments. Those shoegazing bucolic pieces will guide the listener in a land of nostalgic revisitations. |
YANNICK FRANCK & PIETRO RIPARBELLI - 'Whinny Muir' CD (Silentes) - £9
A single, long, deeply moving, slow and expanded drone-track, built on ever-changing sonic masses, low frequencies, strong electric / electronic sounds, field recordings, rough distortions, sunken organ chords, and subdued inserts of strings / orchestral parts. It was created using short wave radio signals, feedback, voice, various effects and filters as well as different works of the Italian Baroque composer Alessandro Scarlatti as central sound source. The title refers to the Lyke-Wake Dirge, a 14th-century English funeral chant from north Yorkshire (the chorus of which is sung by Yannick Franck on the last part). It is a warning about the lack of empathy and generosity and their repercussions within the travel of the soul on its way to heaven. An involving and extraordinary trip across an obscure sonic path by Italian Pietro Riparbelli (K11, PT-R) and Belgian Yannick Franck (Y.E.R.M.O., Idiosyncrasia). |

RAMLEH - 'Hole In The Heart' 2 x LP + 7" (Dirter) - £32
On its initial release in 1987, Hole in the Heart was a radical reinvention of Ramleh. The band had split in 1984 after two years of power electronics noise assaults and it was assumed this would be more of the same. Listeners were in for a shock though. Gary Mundy, the sole survivor from earlier line-ups was a big fan of the writer Jean Genet and had been deeply upset to hear of his death and had recorded a four track solo tribute called "Hole In The Heart" using lyrics inspired by the book Funeral Rites but decided to release it as Ramleh. Musically it was a mix of trebly psychedelic guitar, noise, mournful hymn-like keyboards and distorted vocals with no obvious influences. It is often described as one of the best power electronics records of all-time but isn't really a power electronics record at all; rather post-power electronics. It was released on cassette only on Broken Flag. Over the years the tracks - especially the important classic 'Product Of Fear' - were shared between fans, and through word of mouth people began to talk about these recordings as being in some way special. In 2009 Dirter brought all of the tracks together on a now sought after double CD. 13 years on, the double vinyl version is finally here. The tracks have been reordered to put the original 4 tracks on the first disc where they belong. "Hole In The Heart" sounds like no other record by Ramleh or anybody else and has taken on a life of its own far from the largely-ignored cassette-only 1987 release. Ltd x 300 copies on black vinyl, including a bonus 7" single featuring a contemporaneous compilation track missed off the CD version. |
THETA & ENVENOMIST & GRUNTSPLATTER - 'At The End Of The Road' CD (Crionic Mind) - £11.50
After working on the recently released "The Barrens" album from Theta and Envenomist, Scott Candey (Gruntsplatter / Crionic Mind boss) now joins those two acts for a new 3-way collaborative album. "At The End OF The Road" inhabits the abandoned places and the secrets and stains that linger beneath the ruin. A haunted Noise Ambient pilgrimage to the belly of isolation. Is there a lonelier sound than an escalating voice asking the question, "Hello?". Envenomist is David Reed, the musician behind projects such as Luasa Raelon and Telesurgient. Theta is Greek artist Themistoklis Altintzoglou, currently residing in Tromsø, northern Norway. He is also half of the duos Mass Ejection, Metatag and Isolation. Ltd x 200 copies in a 6-panel digipak. |
NOX - 'Abyssal Codex' CD (Winter-Light) - £11.50
The second album from Nox (Croatian artist Jurica Santek, also of Aegri Somnia, and Efil), follows in the footsteps of his previous "Opus Unending" album (Winter-Light, 2020). This is traditional dark ambient, with the focus still aimed on low, sub tones, edged with industrial and horror recordings. The music is still downtune and lo-fi, interspersed with harsh sounds and natural elements. "The main focus is on dark, isolationist soundscapes but also as music without distraction, that can be used as a background meditative for various purposes. The aim is to reach a fluid dark atmosphere that is pleasant and meditational to listen to, but that is also having dark and unnerving moments". Ltd x 200 copies in a matt gatefold digisleeve. |
MLEHST - 'Female Female Female' CD (Karo Productions) - £11
Brand new release from the English experimental / noise perversions project, founded in 1991 by All Brentnall. "Female Female Female" is made up of 4 lengthy tracks (67 mins) running the gamut of in-your-face harsh noise to pulsating electronics, avant-garde experiments, and metallic drones. A prolific artist with over 80 albums and dozens of EPs on hard-to-find cassettes and vinyl (often in small quantities), the project started to wind down in the late 90's. In 2005, however, Mlehst was restarted and continues to release new recordings. You can find his vast back catalogue on labels such as Oxidation, New Forces, Self Abuse, RRRecords, Mother Savage, and his own labels Belief Recordings / Bandaged Hand Produce. |
DEGRADATION - 'Leadlined' LP (Brachliegen Tapes) - £17
A 35-minute lamentation of the perverse ideology of the English, shaped by sound collage and heavy electronics. Heaving drones of memory churn the decayed hum of modernism and the spiritual bus routes of the past. £40 million of military hardware flying low over the colonial jugular; the knifing wind off the Kentish coast, shearing through the tendons of Roman roads and Saxon shores. Through the record's mediation of these imagined pasts and displaced futures - the sinews of a settler class - the debilitating power of personal bereavement collides with the enervating deluge of a grieving national mythology. Post-industrial synthesis gives way to full-spectrum noise, and intrusive thoughts are excavated via aural saturation bombing. Shaped by collapsing signal chains and biting delays, "Leadlined" pores over the rapine chain of degeneration that is England. Through bricolage it attempts to come to terms with the inescapable, morbid nostalgia of the nation's psyche. In this impasse of postponed crisis, future horizons recede and misdirected resentments permeate all things. Degradation (Vinegar Tom and George Rayner-Law of Schwerpunkt) push these cold tones of clay and lead through networks of machinery and loss. Sounds are processed and reprocessed, field recordings swallowed and regurgitated through 35-year-old-hardware. Whispers crackle through a geiger pulse, modulated by municipal memory aides. This is art production as process, wrung out on stolen time. Don't quit the day job. In a sustained state of melancholia, we sit on the country's hard edge, in all the squall and murmur, shadows refracted by the wine-dark sea. 180g heavyweight vinyl, made out of ECO-friendly materials. Features a double-sided riso print insert by artist Simon Moreton. |
