The 5th album from Birmingham-based industrial/doom metal band Khost sees the band forging new and at times nightmarish territories, alongside their signature walls of detuned guitar, corroded percussion and VHS atmospherics.

Inspiration for many of the tracks came from countless live shows and even soundcheck experiments in which extreme, harsh electronics evolved, as did punk/early industrial tempos, all of which were then fused into the DNA of "Many Things Afflict Us Few Things Console Us".

Khost remark: "We hoped that the experience would be something like venturing into an off-limits wing of some gallery after-hours, with each turn more disorientating than where you just were".

Collaborators include AXEBREAKER (aka Terence Hannum of Locrian), acclaimed cellist JO QUAIL, and Berlin-based sound designer MANUEL LIEBESKIND.

The CD and the vinyl are different beasts. The CD is reinforced with 7 extra tracks including ADRIAN STAINBURNER's incredible remix of 'Yellow Light' featuring STEPHEN MALLINDER (Cabaret Voltaire, Wrangler) on vocals, and BERENECES adding his signature deep, dark D&B sound to the track 'Death Threat'. Tumble back into the nebulous and murky psychedelic haze of 70's-80's VHS horror!

Explore grimy palimpsests from the film studio to the grindhouse with 400 Lonely Things in "The New Twilight": eleven creepy yet sublime analogue microdoses of vintage genre and exploitation audio sampled and filtered through the darkly ambient, melodically droning, melancholic nerd soul.

It's been said by many over the years that Horror is the most flexible genre. So many ideas, themes, and styles flow through it. Craig Varian of 400 Lonely Things has spent a half-century on earth exploring almost all of it, and finds a particular sweet spot in the glut of films released in the VHS boom of the 80's.

Varian developed a fascination for the worlds of sound revealed by audio sampling after first encountering an Ensoniq Mirage in the 1980s. While he found sampling music interesting and often surprising, it was the overlooked moments in the audio environments of horror films in particular that seemed to provide the most fertile wealth of inexplicably sublime material. More often than not, samples from these sources seemed eager to twist themselves into moments of smeary, effusive beauty and when looped and treated, often veered directly into mysterious assemblies of warm melancholia - meditative poetics that were never implied in their lurid lo-fi grindhouse presentations. And, of course, sometimes they were just creepy.

While a couple previous releases by 400 Lonely Things in this realm have focused on specific film-titles (2008's "Tonight Of The Living Dead" and 2022's "Nigths And Profecy") with similar results, their 17th album "The New Twilight" is the first 400 Lonely Things release to take a slight step back to widen that perspective a bit, to focus on the overall genre itself. With the exception of one single track, each song (and song title) is sourced from a single film.

To further this theme, the chronologically ordered booklet included in the physical packaging (and digital booklet included with Bandcamp purchases) uses the same techniques to extract a hazy and dreamlike visual reference from the murky celluloid sources.

"Broken Allures", the fifth LP from trio Jac Berrocal, David Fenech, and Vincent Epplay (following releases on Blackest Ever Black, Akuphone, KlangGalerie), furthers their unique recording style with a musique concrète approach to mixing, characterized by the distinctive sound and technique of musicians and producers. Fenech and Epplay have paired with legendary French musician Berrocal, renowned for his collaborations with Nurse With Wound, Vince Taylor, Jaki Liebezeit, Pascal Comelade, Sunny Murray etc. "Broken Allures" is arguably their most coherent and fully accomplished album to date.

For this album, the trio has invited two fantastic musicians to compose with them: COSEY FANNI TUTTI and JAH WOBBLE.

COSEY FANNI TUTTI (Throbbing Gristle, Chris & Cosey, COUM Transmissions) contributes vocals, cornet, and electric guitar in her unique style. She has also written lyrics for two tracks on the album and brings a radical touch to the instrumental track 'Viva la Hacienda', which, in her own words, recalls her time recording with Throbbing Gristle.

JAH WOBBLE (founding member of Public Image Limited, and collaborator with African Head Charge, Brian Eno, Björk, Holger Czukay, Jaki Liebezeit, Bill Laswell, Primal Scream, Evan Parker, Sinéad O'Connor etc) plays a deep bass line on one track. He adds his signature industrial dub sound, with deep sub-bass frequencies.

The Totality Of Death compiles 20 songs from past limited-edition releases, digital compilations, and the most obscure recesses of the T × R × P archive. The material - reworked and remastered in 2024 e.v. - is spread over two separate compact discs, transmitted by ᚦᛟᚦ ᚷᛁᚷ and ᚾᛟᚺ ⩝⚭⩝ respectively.

The CDs feature different, intricately-designed artwork throughout, and are beautifully presented in reverseboard, flood-printed, 6-panel digipaks, each coming with an exclusive artcard when bought direct from Cold Spring or the artist.

The t-shirts, which come in red and army green mirroring the CD artwork, feature two-colour screenprinted designs on Gildan SoftStyle.

CONJECTURE - 'V (Ext. Edit)' CD (Zoharum) - £11.50

Rhythmic Industrial / Dark Ambient / IDM from Greece. Exactly five years since the vinyl release of "V", (Amek, 2019), and on the 10th anniversary of the band's existence, this new CD edition has been expanded to include tracks from the cassette EP "∫V" (featuring remixes including Antichamber, Evitceles, BlakkHarbor, Flint Glass). "V" is an anti-body statement. The individual's disengagement from the human body and from all kinds of physical hypostasis is portrayed through unconventional industrial sound forms. Sometimes oneiric, sometimes frozen and aggressive, while at the same somewhat erotic. Conjecture's musical expressions are well-constructed and climax into the literary metaphor of the human body deconstruction. "V" is dedicated to the process of seeking out the individual existence, which can occur beyond the barriers of life, death or creation. "V" unveils the materiality of flesh and the frailty of thoughts. This album is an obsessive manifest against the flesh-cage; a hymn for the consciousness, found standing silent in the background, and reflects the true nature and cause of personal existence. SETH NEHIL & BRUNO DUPLANT - '(Else)where' 2 x CD Boxset (Auf Abwegen) - £22

Distant instruments and voices, corroded melodies, electronic insects and low tones drift across a series of field recordings - captured moments in time and space. A dream narrative emerges from fractured frames. Intersections of locations contain a collection of deceptions, interruptions and overlays. "(else)where" is an audio-visual collaboration between composers Seth Nihil and Bruno Duplant, and photographers TJ Norris + Harrison Higgs. "The first set is heavy on the environmental recordings, that situate us in a difficult to place landscape: machines whirr, wind blows, insects chirp in the distance and objects roll around on hollow, suggestive surfaces. Duplant and Nehil's processing is deceptively minimal - the recordings are unedited, but by layering and adding unusual, phantasmagoric electronic elements, they draft a narrative that swerves hypnotically from the real world into the imaginary. On the second set, Duplant plays slow piano chords over Nehil's insectoid oscillations and buzzing flies, and interrupts the near-silence with gong-like percussion" (Boomkat). Presented over two CDs and 10 photographic prints in a soft touch clamshell boxset, the 15 soundscapes, each a consistent length (5:00 and 10:00) are placed in conversation with 19 images, each a pairing of halves. Cards and sounds may be shuffled by the listener to create new juxtapositions. A poem by David Grubbs completes the set.

TROUM - 'Symbiosis' LP VIOLET (Auf Abwegen) - £23.50

The original "Symbiosis" MCD was released in January 2003 as a limited edition in a handmade 3D pyramid-box (200 copies) on Troum's own Transgredient Records, with an additional standard edition in a stickered and handcoloured cardboard cover with obi strip. The five original tracks were recorded from May 2000 - August 2002 and consisted of guitar-only solo pieces by both members. Forming a unity out of singularities, merging the contradictions, this first reissue has an additional unreleased bonus track; a 2023 reworking of older material recorded with the same approach. Troum ("dream") is a duo located in Bremen, established in early 1997. The two members Glit[S]ch and Baraka[H] were active before in the influential ambient industrial group Maeror Tri (1988-1996). The dream seen as a central manifestation of the unconscious symbolizes the aim of Troum to lead the listener into a hypnotizing dream-state of mind, a pre-verbal and primal consciousness sphere. ILLUSION OF SAFETY & Z'EV - 'Illusion Of Safety & Z'EV' 12" BLACK - £20

A long overdue and essential industrial collaboration, which fell through the cracks after the passing of Z'EV in 2017 and Illusion Of Safety were in the midst of a 7+ year hiatus. Illusion Of Safety helped shape various movements within the annals of 80's cassette culture, as well as industrial / experimental / noise / ambient music on the whole. As for Z'EV, it's hard to measure how immense his influence was. Active since the 70's, and highly instrumental in the development of metal percussion within the context of industrial, experimental and noise music, Z'EV created instruments out of discarded industrial materials, and that process evolved into structures that can be swung back and forth like marionettes, or in some cases were self-operable devices. Later, he grew to embrace drone and ambient music in addition to continuing his works for percussion until his passing in 2017. What we have here is a potent cocktail of scrap metal, processed field recordings, modular synthesis, and plenty of aptly placed intermittent percussive clatter. The overall impression is a very calculated sound collage that still feels like the sonic equivalent of a deep epiphany, or maybe a catalyst for one. What seems like a casual interweaving of a wide range of unexpected elements slowly becomes sewn together into a work that balances complexity and harshness. ATRAX MORGUE - 'Negative Frequencies ' LP (Urashima) - £24

Honouring Italian Death Industrial legend Atrax Morgue's enduring impact on the avant-garde music landscape, this reissue commemorates one of the final artistic beacons before Marco Corbelli's untimely departure. Originally released on limited CDR in February 2006 (150 copies, Slaughter Productions), "Negative Frequencies" encapsulates the disease and bleak essence for which Atrax Morgue is renowned; an unwavering dedication to the exploration of the death. Atmospheric, repetitive, and haunting textures intertwine to create a uniquely evocative auditory experience. Corbelli, through his meticulous approach, manipulates synths and analogue tape to craft a sonic landscape that invites introspection into the darker recesses of the human psyche. Shortly after the album's original release, Corbelli took his own life, rendering this work one of the last tangible echoes of his creative brilliance. This seminal work is now reissued for the first time on vinyl and features a cover image sourced from the "Atlante di Medicina Legale" by W. Weimann and O. Prokop. Ltd x 199 copies including an A3 folded booklet, containing the original notes and drawings by the talented Marco Corbelli from the CD edition, enriched with a collection of new annotations and previously unreleased photographs provided by Andrea Marutti (who also remastered this edition).

SPITEFUL WOMB - 'Interior Castle' LP (Cipher Productions) - £22

The debut LP of Nora Zimmerman's project Spiteful Womb. "Interior Castle" coalesces many of the elements which have coursed through her cassette and CDR releases over the last decade (inc splits with Djinn, Bride, Trou), combining sombre dark ambient, fetid power electronics, captured sound elements and hints of melodic dissatisfaction into an architected sequence of carefully layered and viscerally powerful compositions. "Interior Castle" finds common (burial) ground across the range of post-industrial recesses in which Spiteful Womb has dwelled, constructing a sinister sequence of mansion rooms which expose an array of embedded horrors. ZELENYE DELA - 'Uyti Withvoim Delam' CD (Ksenza Records) - £11.50

Green things are living between the cracks, pulling like oil. Fuzz drone, philosophical exercises under soundwaves and doom jazz in the spirit of old Bohren & Der Club Of Gore under a noisy synthetic environment. Zelenye Dela (Green Things) present "Go About Your Own Business" - a noisy Dark Jazz / Drone album using synths, samples, noise, and guitar, with guest artists Sleepwalker, Letov, and K1R2CH8T7V.
