Cold Spring is proud to present a unique collaboration between Industrial Breakbeat pioneers MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO (Jack Dangers) and the undisputed king of Japanese noise, MERZBOW (Masami Akita).
"We may not speak the same language, but in the vortex of sound, there's a raw, primal understanding that transcends words. Noise can be art, a visual representation could maybe be Jackson Pollock's No 5, a plexus of chaos redefining what music can and could be. Pushing boundaries with Masami wasn't just a musical adventure, it was a masterclass in sonic anarchy" (Jack Dangers, January 2024).
"Extinct" sees the duo take listeners on a transcendental journey, focusing on the dismantling of beat and structure and recycling the result through layers of beautifully crafted noise and feedback loops, giving birth to new rhythms buried deep in the dirt.
The 20 minute opener '!FLAKKA¡' takes constantly evolving breakbeats which are gradually broken down over time, driven through a filter of harsh noise, destroying the old to give birth to the new. Raw and unforgiving, the track is a behemoth that blends mutant forms of broken beats and hints of dub, creating rhythmic noise of the highest calibre in the process.
'Burner' takes the record to its ultimate conclusion, the initial drum beat broken down so that it is barely recognisable. Pulsating distortion and high end audio fragments bleed into each other as the track lumbers forth and destroys everything in its path before slowly unravelling, degrading and falling apart.

Step into the shadows of ancient mysticism as Llyn Y Cwn, the maestro of Welsh dark ambient, unveils the mesmerising odyssey that is "Megaliths".
A profound exploration of the sacred resonance embedded within stone circles, capturing years of field recordings from the silent and enigmatic monuments that stand as timeless witnesses to the ebb and flow of existence.
Ben Powell has crafted a sonic voyage that mirrors the sacred spaces marked by stoic pillars of rock, each track representing a specific site. Delving deep into the esoteric significance of stone circles, the album portrays these structures not merely as historical relics but as religious ceremonial sites where the veil between our world and the eternal realm becomes tantalisingly thin.
Extracting ambient soundscapes from burial chambers, Ben has utilised convolution reverbs to replicate the ominous ambiance of these ancient spaces. A veteran of stone circle exploration, Ben's decades-long journey has yielded field recordings that capture the haunting whispers of wind and the solemn caws of crows, enveloping the listener in a ghostly atmosphere that transcends the ordinary.
Guided by the wisdom found in Julian Cope's "The Modern Antiquarian" and Aurbrey Burl's "A Guide to the Stone Circles of Britain", Llyn Y Cwn embarks on a sonic pilgrimage across the country, exploring the remote bleakness of these sites. The album transitions from the cramped, gloomy chambers of tombs to the unroofed, wide rings - a journey from darkness to light, from the dead to the living, and from the grave to the sky.
"Megaliths" is a ritual, a sonic séance that beckons listeners to commune with the ancient energies that saturate these sacred circles - an atmospheric descent into the heart of mysterious realms, where the boundaries between the earthly and the spiritual blur into an indistinguishable, haunting atmosphere. CORRUPTED - 'Felicific Algorithm / Mushikeras'

Corrupted is a mysterious Japanese doom metal band, formed in 1994. Immensely downtuned guitar and crushingly slow bass are shrouded under deep layers of feedback. They are rightly hailed as one of the heaviest and darkest doom metal bands of all time.
This is not a simple reissue of the 2018 multi-speed, vinyl-only release "Felicific Algorithim" (Cold Spring). Though the first two tracks were created using the same field recordings / source material captured in Amagasaki, Osaka, and Fukushima, the tracks have been carefully reworked into a much darker sound. The new track titles 'Felicific Algiorithm' and 'Felicific Aligorithm' reflect this; like a mind virus appearing the same at first glance.
The 27-minute track 'Mushikeras' was recorded 2022-23 as a four-piece line-up of Kaz Mike (howling guitar and bass), Rie Lambdoll (vocal and bass), Mark Y. (guitar and bass), and Chew (drum and high carbon steel). A self-released digital-only track in autumn '23, this is the first physical manifestation of this doom metal behemoth, full of loud sludge, funeral dirge, haunting whispers / howling harsh vocals, and atmospheric build-ups.

LULL - 'Journey Through Underworlds'

The classic, genre-defining 1993 album from LULL - the pioneering, isolationist dark ambient project of MICK HARRIS of SCORN, FRET, ex-NAPALM DEATH - is a dark journey through the Stygian netherworlds of Hell.
The listener is left with the impression of a final escape into reality; a return upon waking, with only wispy trace memories and the heavy rush of blood-pumping fear as a keepsake.
With this album, we are plunged back into a dark pit of noise - all escape barred, all hope dashed. The nightmare continues, the journey through underworlds descends deeper. These are soundtracks for Nightmares. Despite there being just three tracks on the album, it lasts just shy of 75 minutes.
Originally released on Sentrax (the label of the late John Everall / Tactile), the CD suffered the 'disc rot' fate of many PDO pressings from 1988-1993, rendering most of that initial run unplayable.
Mixed by Justin K Broadrick (GODFLESH). Remastered by Martin Bowes (The Cage Studios) from the original recordings supplied by Mick Harris.

Set during Cold War Soviet Russia, the ominous film starring Oksana Akinshina (Bourne Supremacy), Fedor Bondarchuk, and Pyotr Fyodorov Jr follows the story of a cosmonaut returning from space with a mysterious extraterrestrial organism; essential viewing for those with a penchant for "Alien"-style body horror.

The new Sonologyst "sonic documentary" delves into the secretive realm of shortwave transmissions; a chronicle of clandestine shortwave transmissions culled from a span of nearly four decades (1982-2021). These mysterious transmissions - repetitive voices, signals, sound pulses, short pieces of music - were collated and edited to compose the tracks of the main album.
Immersed in an isolating fog of dark ambient, deep drone music and cinematic sound art, originating from covert radio stations engaged in military and espionage endeavours, the tracks unveil a hidden sonic landscape of strategic communication.
The second disc, in its extensive presentation, provides a deeper immersion into these enigmatic broadcasts. Each recording remains unaltered, accompanied only by a ghostly drone. An unfiltered glimpse into the world of clandestine communication.

The latest chapter in The Telescopes' idiosyncratic exploration of sound combines hallucinatory ballads with transcendent melodies, clanging, and lo-fi buzzes, with a substantial amount of crushing and sound degradation. The result is an album radiating a dark and abrasive, yet ethereal energy.
Created entirely independently by Stephen Lawrie in a remote cottage in West Yorkshire January-May 2022, the record was made with broken toys and cheap synths - mostly Pocket Operators and miniature synths, with no guitars. The complexity of sound rests within the simplicity of the composition and musical arrangements.
Features bonus remixes by Black Market Karma and Mosaic Runes.

 CAPRICORNI PNEUMATICI - 'Al-Azif' CD (Eighth Tower Records / Unexplained Sounds) - £12
Originally released on tape in 1987, Capricorni Pneumatici's second album was recorded in an underground location containing a group of vitrified cement tanks that created an extremely deep reverberation and amplification.
The band used sheets of metal, hammers, PVC pipes, air compressors, corrugated tubes, etc, recorded with a Teac hi-fi tape deck and two Akai microphones suspended at different heights inside the tanks, directly connected to the tape deck. All recordings were made directly on the two-track recorder during the performance, without any digital or analogue intervention, and no overdubbing after recording.
The first seven tracks are taken from the "Al-Azif" C45 tape published in 1987 on 666 Production, while the last four are part of the same recording session from June 1986, unused due to space constraints. Unavailable for nearly 40 years, "Al-Azif" is a jewel in the discography of Capricorni Pneumatici, one of the flagship projects of Italian industrial / esoteric underground in the 80's, alongside Ain Soph, Sigillum S, LAShTAL, and other representatives of this realm of sonic occultism. Cult Of Light is the new collaborative project by Italian Dark Ambient musicians Davide Del Col and Ascanio Borga. Inspired by ancient cults, folk horror tales and exploration expeditions, the music evokes long forgotten rituals and aims towards uncharted territories where mysterious ancestral forces are still alive and well. The debut album, "The Luminous Spiral", is full of mesmerizing dark electronics and an ever-evolving flux of sonic matter that represent a sonic ritual with tribal and spiritual overtones.
Davide Del Col is an electronic musician and drummer with his own project Antikatechon, as well as We Promise to Betray (with Giuseppe Verticchio of Nimh), Molnija Aura (with Andrea Marutti), and Echran (with Fabio Volpi). Ascanio Borga is an electronic musician and guitarist, who has released several solo albums, and collaborated with musicians like Cristiano Luciani (Cris X), and Paolo Taballione (Carillon Del Dolore, Christian Death, Gronge).  DAVID LEE MYERS / SONOLOGYST / LARS BRÖNDUM - 'Unus Et Trinus' CD (Unexplained Sounds) - £12
Dark Ambient with an experimental edge that pushes the boundaries of the genre, while retaining its essence. Sonologyst invited New York's David Lee Myers (Arcane Device) and Sweden's Lars Bröndum to collectively produce tracks for this album, after appearing on various compilations for Unexplained Sounds. From exchanges of samples, audio experiments, music segments, a long piece of over 20 minutes emerged, which effectively encapsulates how their musical sensibilities complement each other. Each artist also composed two of their own individual tracks, rounding off the album. "Unus Et Trinus". The listener can therefore hear three different sonic worlds creating a synthesis.  ENS IMPERFECTISSIMUM - 'Kama-Loka-Aur Naraka' CD (Zazen Sounds) - £12
"We are part of the whole. As it is above, it is below and as it is on one side, it is on the other. We are reinterpretations, apparitions, experiences, elementals, experiences, deities, living and dead. Doesn't death exist before everything? Isn't death born out of life?". This work is a continuation of the debut "Illuminate E Aelimitate" which had as its theme contact with the dead. On this second work, the main theme is the transition from the material to astral life, when our earthly time ends. For this, it was essential to carry out different rituals full of visualisations and gnosis that would allow access to the hidden parts of the astral world. Necroglossolalia, bells, kanglins, death whistles, mantras, sounds taken directly from graves, and bone sounds were used to create the recordings.  MUSLIMGAUZE - 'Lo-Fi India Abuse' CD (Other Voices Records) - £13
This disc was recorded in 1998, and released at the turn of the century on Portland's BSI Records. Some tracks are "pure" Muslimgauze and some are remixes of tracks from Systemwide's "Sirius" CD. Bryn Jones uses hand percussion, whistles, vocal wailing, unpredictable cut-ups and delays, along with dub bass lines, drones, and twinkling synth waves. The percussion varies in tempo and intensity, often turning brutal with heavy pulsating electronic soundwaves and surging jabs of noise. The sound is very crisp and clean, extremely well-produced, recorded, and nicely varied throughout the length of the disc. Remastered. Ltd x 500 copies in a gatefold mini-LP sleeve. |

Second album by Italian act Pain Injection, the DSBM Dark Ambient band formed by Z.C. (aka Adriano Vincenti of Senketsu No Night Club, Zoloft Evra, Macelleria Mobile di Mezzanotte, and Cronaca Nera), and Cold (aka Manuel Mazzenga of Zoloft Evra, and Nocturnal Degrade), now with new members Tenebra (Dreariness) and Amanda Nostalgie (Helus).
The album explores, through dark sonorities, the various aspects of specific paraphilic, repetitive, intense, sexually arousing fantasies or behaviors that usually involve inanimate objects, fetishes, extreme sexual practices, suffering or humiliation of oneself or of the partner. Each track is inspired by a specific mania. A deviated and black album, the result of distorted sensory experiences, where blood is also a key to inflicted or self-inflicted pleasure. "Chains" is a reflection of the tumultuous journey through life; its unpredictability and transformative events, the struggle for identity, and the fear of change. The lyrics illustrate the importance of striving for inner peace and silence amidst the chaos. The second part of the famous collaboration between two UK based electronic pioneers: John Bolloten aka The Rootsman and the late Bryn Jones aka Muslimgauze.
For this album the original The Rootsman material from his albums "Into The Light" and "52 Days To Timbuktu" was remixed and deconstructed by Muslimgauze. As always with Bryn Jones, all material is inspired by Arab culture. We hear distorted dub rhythms, sawn-off loops, traditional music, male and female voices and then distorted rhythms again. Closing your eyes, you can find yourself in the middle of an eastern city, walking along its noisy streets, admiring the ancient architecture. This noise can tell amazing stories! Originally released by Third Eye Music (The Rootsman's own label), this is the first time the album is available since its original 1999 pressing. Ltd x 200 copies in a gatefold mini-LP sleeve.

 THE TAPES - 'A Touch Of Despair' CD (Unexplained Sounds) - £12
The Tapes was founded by a young Giancarlo Drago in 1982. Dating back to 1986, "A Touch of Despair" was recorded live on a standard 2-track cassette recorder, using a 4-channel Fostex mixer, a self-built analogue echo unit, a Korg MS-20, and toy instruments. It is undoubtedly the darkest and most industrial work in The Tapes' production. The cover features a photo of what the musician saw from his bedroom window: the rooftops of industrial factories, with a distant steel mill emitting smoke. Immersed in the music and industrial culture of the time (Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, W.S. Burroughs, J.G. Ballard, W. Gibson, B. Sterling, P.K. Dick), "A Touch of Despair" represents one of the brightest examples of the Italian "tape culture" of the 80's, as well as a significant testament to creating music that defies the passage of time by experimenting with extremely limited technical means and relying on passion, motivation, and creativity. This reissue also features three additional unreleased tracks from the same period, providing valuable material for enthusiasts of the genre.

 THE WASHING PLANCK - 'Integrale Sui Cammini' CD (Unexplained Sounds) - £12
The Washing Planck is Matteo Mariano (an experimental /soundtrack artist, also recording as Macrogramma and Phoanøgramma), and Domenico Diano (a specialist in synthesizers and self-built electronic instruments). An album of minimalist experimental electronic music, it utilises a hybrid system of sound creation, combining analogue and digital synths, structured algorithms, and magnetic tapes to create series of generative textures that lead to different paths based on the same principles. The Washing Planck is a wordplay that arises from the curiosity of connecting everyday objects, with the name of the German physicist Max Planck, the initiator of quantum physics, and a repetitive action over time.
The album art features subliminal information; two alternate paths depicted by lines, each with a strip containing two very short stories in Italian - one more elaborate and one simpler - with both stories constructed using the same phrases and words.

 VARIOUS ARTISTS - 'Witchcraft And Black Magic In The United States' CD (Eighth Tower Records / Unexplained Sounds) - £12
Meticulously-crafted aural creations with the explicit intention of transporting listeners into the captivating realms inspired by the witchcraft and black magic in the United States. The well-documented witch-hunting craze spread from the Old World of Europe to the New World during the 16th-17th centuries (most famously, Salem) and beyond. Featuring in the writings of Arthur Miller, HP Lovecraft and Ambrose Bierce, this interest has spread into other forms of entertainment, particularly with the advent of cinema, most notably Robert Eggers 2015 movie The VVitch. Along with modern investigations into witchcraft's traditions and history, this has sparked a revival in interest in both Witchcraft and the latter Black Magic in recent years, including this new collection.  DANIELE CIULLINI - 'Great Events Are Coming' CD (St.An.Da. / Silentes) - £10
Italian 'mail artist' Daniele Ciullini was part of the forward-drinking TRAX collective and a member of early 80's outfits The Cop Killers and Oxidized Man. Ambient noises compounded by rhythmic timbres of toy instruments... the rustling and crackling of old vintage radios have been joined by snippets of miniaturized voices from the web. Over time, different sound elements have settled, coming to constitute a heterogeneous but at the same time subtly fascinating whole. The final work is a fil rouge that crosses all these elements joining them in an unconventional sound research hypothesis. Ltd x 200 copies in a gatefold digisleeve. |
 GIANLUCA FAVARON & STEFANO GENTILE & CARL MICHAEL VON HAUSSWOLFF & ROD MODELL - 'Landslide (For Field Recordings And Sine Waves)' 2 x LP **SLIGHT DAMAGE** (13 / Silentes) - £25
On October 9, 1963, 260 million cubic meters of rock broke off from the top of Monte Toc. It fell into the reservoir of the Vajont dam, producing an enormous wave of at least 50 million cubic meters of water. Flooding destroyed several villages in the valley and killed almost 2,000 people. In some ways, it is as if the landslide swept away the past and the future of an entire community. An apocalypse lasting just a few minutes left scars and stigmata for decades to follow. Movement and accumulation are two keywords that guided the search for the sounds hidden in the silence. The landscape reveals reverberations of its past... the movements of downward sliding, crystallized substances, and ghosts of its previous inhabitants, frozen in time.
The original version of "Landslide", and the C. M. Von Hausswolf version, re-construct nature in a unique and unusual way, sewn with the smallest amount of sonic fabric. Reissue of the 1995 album by British post-industrial / ambient group O Yuki Conjugate, originally released by Staalplaat. Coming four years after their lauded "Peyote" album, "Equator" made use of the emergent technology of the early 90's, making it one of the first albums to be mixed with digital equipment, weaving together a blend of studio, live and location recordings to create their own deeply immersive, enveloping soundscapes. Brooding atmospheres unfold underneath a wide range of ethnic percussion and deep, meditative basslines - existing in a unique cross-section of Hassell-inspired 4th world mystery, Industrial landscapes, and the rich middle-eastern projections pioneered by Muslimgauze.
It's a deeply hypnotic work that joins the dots between the late 80's industrial scene and the smoked-out chill-out rooms of the '90s. This expanded edition features an additional 30 minutes of material, together with glorious new artwork from artist and actor Frederick Schimmelschmidt.

"Joel would record sound sketches, which would then be torn apart and decomposed by Kazuyuki. It was a creativity flood, exchanging mails and sound files over the ether... In less than two months we created a huge array of material, which became our first output as Psychic Drones". It can be introverted and reflective, or a full-blast explosion. The super deluxe edition of Einstürzende Neubauten's new album, "Rampen". They search for new forms - pursuing undiscovered sounds and unspoken words; constant evolution is the best way to describe Einstürzende Neubauten's body of work. In its 44th year of existence, the band is going back to its roots while redefining itself. It's a change in self-image, for which the Berlin quintet plus one has created its own genre in 2024: APM - Alien Pop Music. Blixa Bargeld, N. U. Unruh, Alexander Hacke, Jochen Arbeit, Rudolph Moser and Felix Gebhard present themselves from their most unpredictable and unconventional sides. Since the mid-80's, Einstürzende Neubauten have been experimenting on stage with what they call "ramps": public improvisations with open developments and outcomes; launchpads into the still unexplored that the band performed in 2022 during the encore on its last Alles in Allem tour, and those recordings served as the basis for this new album. "Rampen" is pop music for parallel universes and in-between worlds - for hyperspaces and interzones. It is microcosmic and intergalactic at the same time. There's a return to the roots on one side, while a new art form emerges on the other from powerful eruptions of noise encountering cryptic, often fragmentary lyrics: popular music for aliens and outcasts. A balancing act between avant-garde and tongue-in-cheek, provocation and pop-cultural discontinuity, with themes of change, utopian mind games and transience.  TEHO TEARDO & BLIXA BARGELD (EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN) - 'Live In Berlin' 2 x LP (Spècula) - £32
The new album by Teho Teardo and Blixa Bargeld (Einstürzende Neubauten), was recorded live at Sonic Morgue, Berlin, 6 December 2022; a concrete cellar in the grounds of a former crematorium. The unforgettable evening of powerful yet fragile pieces featured Blixa's signature high-pitched screeches, howls, growls and whispers, with Teardo playing his large array of instruments. The duo were also joined on stage by cello, bass clarinet, as well as a string quartet. "Live In Berlin" closes the circle of the albums "Still Smiling", and "Nerissimo", containing the complete setlist from the concert, and is a summary of those previous two records. Opened by the song 'Nerissimo', the concert was part of a series of European dates culminating in the Berlin gig - a sort of homecoming for the duo that has made the Rome / Berlin axis a membrane continuously crossed by sounds and words in Italian, German and English. The song 'A Quiet Life', originally written for the film of the same name directed by Claudio Cupellini, has severed some of the connection it had with the film because many now associate it with the final episode of Dark, the highly successful Netflix series. |

Active since the late 90's, American artist Stephen Petrus has created an abundance of venerated and well-executed releases under the moniker Murderous Vision. With previous releases delving deep into Dark Ambient waters, and others delivering full-on Death Industrial with Power Electronics brutality, "Mechanical Collapse In Six Stages" is his newest landmark release. There is a feeling of desolation and underlying brutality that shapes the six lengthy tracks. Upfront blackened walls, mechanical patterns and shrill screams evoke a feeling of post-apocalyptic wastelands and total annihilation. As the work progresses, Murderous Vision ramps things up with that highly cherished brutality known from previous exploits, making the last third of this amazing album truly liberating and harsh.  SIST EN 343 / DAVE PHILLIPS - 'Thinking Future Coexistence' LP (Debila Records / Noise Mafia / & / I Shot God) - £19
Split release from Slovenian noise act Sist En 343, and radical Swiss sound artist Dave Phillips. Established in 1999 as one of the first ambient / harsh / noise projects in Slovenia, Sist En 343 (Matjaz Galicic & Miha Novak) was influenced by the ugliness of the harsh reality of the (post) industrial world. This is just their second appearance on vinyl after a 7" on RRRecords. Dave Phillips (Schimpfluch-Gruppe, Fear Of God). has been a purveyor of radical sound since the mid 80's. Working solo since 1987, dp has developed a unique sonic language typified by sharp compositional techniques and strong environmentalist connotations. Black vinyl housed in a reversecard gatefold sleeve with artwork by Matjaz Galicic using photos by Dave Phillips. Includes two inserts, one by each act: a two-sided A3 insert by Sist Sn 343, and a four-sided A3 insert by dp printed on recycled stock. |
 CRANIOCLAST - 'A Con Cristal / Rats Can Coil - Cats Can Roil / Accidental Encounter Of Rats And Cats On A Turntable' CD (13 / Silentes) - £12
"A Con Cristal", the third Cranioclast album or rather EP from 1987, and "Rats Can Coil - Cats Can Roil" from 1990, have been digitised for the first time and are now brought together on one CD. This disc also offers three new tracks (30 mins in total) based on "Rats - Cats" under the name "Accidental Encounter Of Rats And Cats On A Turntable". "A Con Cristal" deals with bunkers, especially along the European coasts, mainly not in their original function during WWII, but in their post-functional appearance as bizzare sculptures or relics of long-dead cultures, architecture of aggression and more. "Rats Can Coil - Cats Can Roil" already sounds like rock 'n' roll in the words and is it or isn't it or is it or not? But the rats and cats are dancing. Accidental encounter of rats and cats on a turntable transforms Rats - Cats into Metal. Into Drone Metal of course or doesn't or does or... But the dogs like that, as was to be expected.  YAT-KHA - 'We Will Never Die' CD (The Lollipoppe Shoppe) - £11.50
Yat-Kha, from the remote Russian republic of Tuva, presents its eighth album. Albert Kuvezin's ultra-low variant of Tuvan throat singing, in the kargyraa or kanzat style, still remains the unique feature of Yat-Kha's mixture of traditional folk music and experimental roots rock. On this new album Kuvezin is accompanied by his long-term musical accomplice Sholban Mongush on igil (a bowed horsehair 2-string cello) and backing vocals. Besides original compositions, the album features words gathered from the sayings and incantations of Tuvan shamans - whose traditions form an unbroken lineage dating back to the neolithic period. It also features covers of Black Sabbath's 'Solitude' and George Harrison's 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' - two songs sometimes played as an encore on live shows.
An extraordinary band who in many ways blazed a trail since the early 1990's for many new and interesting East Asian rock music artists and experimenters such as Mongolian metal-rock band The Hu.

 JUNKYARD SHAMAN - 'Silence, Then Pause' CD (Kohina Records) - £12
A noirish album of dark jazz / ambient from electric wastelands, junkyards and abandoned cities; a mental junkyard of evaporating dreams, disintegrating memories and fading recollections. Junkyard Shaman is the solo project of Finnish artist Jere Kilpinen who resides in Osaka, Japan. This particular album was composed after Twin Peaks season 3 was aired. Jere took lots of inspiration from this and composed a dark jazz / ambient noir album. While differing from the usual Junkyard Shaman sound, this album also differs from other records of that particular genre in that it also features Jere's self-built instruments.  AUGMENTED ATROCITY - 'In Search Of Something That Doesn't Exist' CD (Aussaat) - £12
Augmented Atrocity is the project of former Kovana member Janne. Following on from "Anomaly" (2023, Aussaat), this album follows a futile search that goes through beating electronics, haunting tape loops and frantic screams. The sound squirms through the vines of the past with determination, focused purely on something that doesn't exist. "There is a ton of distorted noise music here, yet it is still about more than just playing a load of ugly sounds (as some would perceive noise music to be). Augmented Atrocity knows how to pull back, go deep, turn on a few loops, whisper a few words and have a different kind of creepiness, only to return in full glory (gory) power electronics at the next corner... it reminded me of Genocide Organ and Whitehouse, but on updated machines. Brutal, minimalist synths, strict square waves, piercing right into your brain, but the variation does it for me here. Without those moments of quiet unrest scattered about, the listener can breathe briefly before filling their lungs and diving back in. Now, that is the kind of noise I like" (Vital Weekly).  BRANDKOMMANDO - 'Jugoslavija 1941-1945' CD (Zoharum) - £11.50
Brandkommando (Karol Wachowski's project), in its characteristic way, contests totalitarianism, this time referring to the turbulent history of the rise of the communist regime of J. Tito, which ruled undivided for many years, using terror against the community living in the then Yugoslavia. The musician uses a means of expression typical of industrial style, close to the aesthetics of Power Electronics / Noise. Numerous quotations and samples from which the thematic outline emerges are subjected to numerous modifications and deconstructions, thus exposing the falsehood of the political manifestos and stripping the pathos and seriousness of these false and devalued ideas, which only serve to implement the tasks of the then authorities. Factor X is Shaun Robert - a veteran of the tape scene since the mid-80's. As well as releasing a plethora of solo cassettes, he has also collaborated with many luminaries of the time including Sudden Infant, Suzuki Shunya, Telepherique, and Runzelstirn & Gurgelstøck. Shaun also records as Mutant Beatniks. This 24-minute CD is a re-release of a very limited cassette put out by English Yoni in 1991. It is an approximate interpretation of the J.G. Ballard book, and features many loops multilayered. Despite its short length, it is a rewarding listen. Ltd x 300 copies in a digipak reproducing the original artwork. |
