400 LONELY THINGS - 'Creature Comforts' + Why I Went To The Woods' - OUT 9th JAN 2026
400 Lonely Things present two beautiful, entwined releases - one, the soundtrack to a perceived isolated apocalypse filled with psychoactive melancholia and ugly lullabies, evoking an acute sense of horror, bewilderment and bereavement... and its twin, devouring hauntological dream worlds inspired by the fictional filmed landscapes of psychedelic folk and benignly sinister pagan nights in the wild forests...
"These albums are opposite sides of the same coin, which is why they are being released in tandem. The coin being, in this analogy, the 2024 National Election in the US and its place in the world's entropic trajectory, and my own emotions in the time since. Thematically different, they are both visceral reactions to these subsequent points in time in which they were made".
"CREATURE COMFORTS"
With the idea that this album would be lullabies for the end of a world, I started seeking out soothing vocal samples and hypnotic audio beds and simple melodies and set about roughing them up to form a soundtrack to my perceived isolated apocalypse. These songs would be ugly on the surface, sad and angry and defeated and more than a little unhinged but, like David's paintings, hopefully have a heart that would show through the scarring... [read the full story of the release here].
"WHY I WENT TO THE WOODS"
Inspired equally by both the fictional filmed landscapes of psychedelic folk - the bucolic British countryside of the 1960s and 1970s which, though I've never witnessed in real life, still fill me with an inexplicable melancholic yearning to return home - and the benignly sinister pagan nights of our young wild forests here in the States... Music that would be suitable for all woodland creatures and ethereal beings of the melancholy forest. [read the full story of the release here].

COIL - 'Backwards' - OUT 23rd JAN 2026
2LP 'FIRE RED' + CD £35 Adv. | 2LP 'COLD WHITE' + CD £30 Adv. | 2LP BLACK + CD £28 Adv.
We mark a decade since we first released Coil's landmark album 'Backwards', with a special 10 year anniversary vinyl reissue. All editions come in a gatefold matt-laminate sleeve with silver detail.
ALL ORDERS DIRECT FROM THE COLD SPRING STORE / BANDCAMP INCLUDE:
THE FIRST EVER RELEASE OF THE FULL 'BACKWARDS DEMOS' (10-track CD), POSTER AND ARTCARD.
After the ground-breaking release of 1990's "Love's Secret Domain" album, Coil were not dormant; the main project was "Backwards", which was started in 1992, updated considerably between 1993 and 1995, and transferred in 1996 to New Orleans, where it was finished in the magic of the Nothing studios of Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails). The album saw the fruition of Jhonn Balance's recent vocal coaching, producing haunting, passionate vocals, while reaching new heights.
23 years after its initiation, these tracks have been beautifully preserved by Danny Hyde and are finally available in highest quality audio. Differing substantially from the later, remixed incarnation, "The New Backwards" (2008), "Backwards" contains the original versions of Coil's much-loved tracks; 'A Cold Cell' and 'Fire Of The Mind', which have appeared on various compilations over the years, and are now presented as originally intended.

CHIMEHOURS - 'Underneath The Earth'
CD £11.50 / LP Black £20 | LP Ltd Earth Green £23 - OUT NOW!
"Underneath The Earth" is the debut album from Chimehours; a hauntological music project for the dislocated present day. Taking inspiration from Max Porter's novel "Lanny", the album digs into themes of nature, myth and community, with an edge of folk-horror.
Drones, drums and gritty guitars are juxtaposed with woodwind, strings and ethereal song. Written and produced between Derbyshire, London and Margate, the album takes musical influence from the likes of Liz Fraser, Broadcast, Beth Gibbons, Bibio and Jóhann Jóhannsson, and atmospheric cues from The Wickerman, The Fog, and Enys Men.
Chimehours is a collaboration between Beck Goldsmith and Jon Dix. The pair have previously performed in bands together and composed music for award-winning film and television. They conjured up this foray into cinematic, horror-flecked contemporary-folk to explore their love of the supernatural and the other-than-human.
Chimehours raid the vaults of 70's British cinema and trad folk soundscapes to riff on contemporary anxieties and ecological yearning. They conjured up this foray into cinematic, horror-flecked contemporary-folk to explore their love of the supernatural and the other-than-human. The result is a collection of all things earthy, exquisite and grotesque.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - 'Decoder'
CD £12 - OUT NOW!

Released on standalone CD for the first time in 33 years, this now-complete edition of the ground-breaking, legendary soundtrack is finally here.
A cult classic of sci-fi dystopia, "Decoder" (1984) saw EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN's members working alongside GENESIS P-ORRIDGE (THROBBING GRISTLE / PSYCHIC TV) and WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS. It's one of the strangest (and most prescient) films of the decade. The film was made in Hamburg and Berlin, and directed by Klaus Maeck 'Muscha' (who directed several punk films).
The lead roles are played by Christiane F and FM Einheit from Neubauten, who also contributed to the film's score. Genesis P-Orridge, the kingpin of the English industrial scene, also appears as a priest of the Black Noise faith. Author William S. Burroughs portrays an insurrectionist salesman of audio equipment (and contributes spoken word to the soundtrack), and American cult actor Bill Rice plays a detective.
SOFT CELL contributed their classic 'Seedy Films', while MATT JOHNSON from THE THE wrote a frenetic, deformed song for the film that is both fantastic and painful to listen to, and EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN's 'Compressed Metal' is sublime. Dave Ball (SOFT CELL), Jon Caffery and Genesis P-Orridge composed the rest of the soundtrack.
A futuristic film, and a joyous application of William S. Burroughs' "The Electronic Revolution", which proposes a seditious and rather poetic method of subverting the masses and inciting them to rise up against the forces of order.
MUZAK IS MORE THAN MUSIC.
• CD in matt-laminate digipak with 10-page foldout booklet.
Track listing:
1. Genesis P-Orridge & Dave Ball 'Muzak For Frogs' (3:23)
2. The The 'Three Orange Kisses From Kazan' (4:30)

ETHNEA NEKRŌN - 'Exo-Metempsychosis' CD (Winter-Light) - £11.50
Ethnea Nekrōn is the new project of Maurizio Landini (Onasander / Les Anges Morts) and Daniel Ferreira (Kloob). Darkness inducing drones, pierced with sci-fi overtones and deep space sound architecture. "Exo-Metempsychosis" is inspired by an idea of reincarnation that does not happen in one's own world but in other worlds of other galaxies. Rebirth as unknown entities that exist in areas far away from the Earth inhabited by human beings. A must for all followers of these two great artists. "[They] manage to unite hypnotic mortuary rhythms with twisting metal, static discharges and other sonic arsenal typical of space-inspired dark ambient with a remarkable degree of cohesion... a surprisingly refreshing take on two relatively well-established subgenres of dark ambient" (For The Innermost). Ltd x 300 copies in a 6-panel digisleeve. |
ORGAN OF CORTI - 'Locus' LP (Dead Mind Records) - £20
Swedish trio Organ Of Corti present their first LP. Slowly moving into new territory, they deliver six bare-boned surreal soundscapes. Minimal, repetitive tape loops, haunting synths and vaguely familiar vocal samples are carefully mixed for a sonic exercise reminiscent of those classic Nurse With Wound and Organum releases. Scene veterans Joachim Nordwall (The Skull Defekts, iDEAL Records boss), Mattias Gustafsson (Altar Of Flies, Barstool Mountain, Nærværet) and Dan Johansson (Sewer Election, Ättestupa, Enhet För Fri Musik, Heinz Hopf etc) have been exploring the possibilities of sound manipulation for years, together or by themselves under various aliases. Stoically moving forward in pursuit of obscure, atmospheric textures that will get right under your skin. While the world is falling apart, they have been fine-tuning their hallucinatory concrète ambiances. The sort of stuff that fits a bleak, enervated mood by chewing on nerve ends, transporting heads to other places. Ltd x 300 copies in a reverseboard sleeve. |
ROBERT TURMAN - 'Distant Dosage' LP CLEAR (Dead Mind Records) - £23
Robert Turman first came onto the Industrial scene in the late 70's as the ominous 'other half' of legendary noise outfit NON. Shortly after recording the classic 1977 single Mode Of Infection, he went on to pursue his own unique vision as a solo artist. Fusing every possible influence at his disposal while laying his ideas down on self-released cassettes like Flux (1981), Spirals of Everlasting Change (1987), Way Down (1987) and the massive Chapter Eleven cassette boxset (1988). Turman resurfaced in 2005 to team up with seminal noise musician Aaron Dilloway, and has been gradually adding new titles to his already impressive discography. For this archival release Turman selected seven tracks that were recorded 1980-1984. This album fits in nicely between his early industrial noise, the long-form minimalism of Flux and the rhythmic industrial of Way Down, focusing on slowly shifting hypnotic loop-based layers of sound. "Absolutely psychotic, psychedelic brilliance here, that makes links from Dadaism and surrealism to industrial music and noise" (Boomkat). Clear vinyl in a reverseboard sleeve with full-size printed insert. |
SONOLOGYST - 'Silencers' LP (Nocturnal Anomalies) - £21
We are thrilled to finally be able to offer the 2017 vinyl version of this brilliant album, reissued by Cold Spring onto CD the following year (CSR253CD). Eerie drones, oscillations from the ether, distorted dark matter, signals from other dimensions... The music of Sonologyst fluctuates between scientific sonic documentaries and psychedelic abstraction, illuminated by early experimentation of the 50's and 60's, as well as future possibilities of the electronic and electro-acoustic."Silencers (The Conspiracy Theory Dossiers)" is inspired by the testimonies of those who have had contact with the so-called "Silencers" or "Men in Black". Federal agents? Aliens? International conspirators? Sonologyst makes a documentary in music, including spy tech, declassified documents, official recordings, control techs, secreted scientific information, CIA Deep Black Programs, NASA classified tapes, Secret societies and breakaway civilization hypotheses. Recommended for those who follow the nebulous paths of Inade, Schloss Tegal, Bad Sector, Lustmord. Ltd x 300 copies. |
TEMPLE OF CLEAR LIGHT - 'Communion' CD (Live Bait Recording Foundation) - £12
Temple Of Clear Light is Dan Serbanescu (Alone In The Hollow Garden / Tanz Ohne Musik). "Communion" is a collection of thelemic devotional pieces created at the confluence of a vast array of styles, incorporating old school industrial structures, real metal and junk percussion, the piercing synths of the 80's, tribal trance elements, experimental modular synth textures, dark pop beats, neofolk flavours and psychedelic electronics. An offering to the diversity blooming from the modern world's Aquarian chaos and maelstrom of information, in which grounding in the inner spaces and personal truth is crucial to establish a point of balance and also to refine the ability to find sacred mysticism in the mundane experiences. Originally self-released in July 2025 in an extremely low edition of just 20 CDR copies, this CD-proper edition of 200 copies is packed in a matt-finish digisleeve, created and designed by Dan Serbanescu. |
THE GREY LAKE - 'The Grey Lake' CD (Winter-Light) - £11.50
The Grey Lake is a long-distance collaboration between two artists, built from an exchange of tones, drones, found sounds, and field recordings. The project's name reflects both artists' identities and creative approaches: the dark ambient soundscapes of Ben Powell (LLYN Y CWN) merge with the reel-to-reel tape manipulations and granular textures of Christopher Olson (STANDARD GREY). Together, they craft new sonic tableaux and evocative atmospheres for the imagination. Dense, immersive drones, delicately layered textures, and rich, enveloping dark ambience. Mastered by Robin Storey (Rapoon). "Dark sounds that immerse the listener in a misty, hazy, and secluded atmosphere... An intercontinental collaboration resulting in music that captures the harsh, desolate, and simultaneously beautiful aspects of wild nature. At times, the music sounds as bleak as the weather can be in some godforsaken place. The interplay between dark ambient and tape manipulation works wonderfully, creating a delightfully wintry album" (Luminous Dash). Ltd x 300 copies in a 6-panel digisleeve. |
TITHING - 'At The Mystery's End' LP (Ætheric Recordings) - £23
Canada's Tithing (neé Tithe) conjures a lush and haunting dark folk. Eleven songs traverse the arcana of the soul and explore the deeply poignant process of reawakening. Wandering melodies and powerful orchestration ebb and flow between S.P Haché's complex finger-picking, while his character baritone is joined by a myriad of voices to spin occult tales with arcane allegory and surreptitious symbolism. Each autobiographical song was conceived with a specific symbol set in mind, informing the words, tonality, and even the instrumentation chosen to sympathetically enhance the magic at work. What has emerged is a haunting dark folk balancing sumptuous bombast and subtle beauty, extracting inspiration from the lush largesse of 2000's post-industrial luminaries such as Current 93, Dead Can Dance, and Rome. Walking the path of the Fool's journey, Tithing has traversed the abyss to transmute the ashes of the past into a fresh vision of spiritual gold. Ltd x 150 copies. |
VARIOUS ARTISTS - 'Analog 2025' CD (Unexplained Sounds) - £12
Originally released in 2016 as "Analog 2020" (digital-only, Unexplained Sounds), this newly remastered edition appears on CD for the first time, featuring three previously unreleased tracks. Reimagined as "Analog 2025", it celebrates and reaffirms the enduring spirit of analogue electronic music in an era increasingly shaped by digital tools and AI-driven processes. With visionary artists such as Robert Rich, Sonologyst, and Simon Balestrazzi taking part, the compilation pays tribute to those who continue to explore the richness and unpredictability of analogue machines. These artists reject sterile perfection in favor of the warmth, instability, and tactile expressiveness that only analogue gear can deliver. "Analog 2025" stands as both a document and a manifesto - a celebration of a global movement of musicians who view analogue synthesis not as a nostalgic indulgence, but as a vital creative choice: an act of resistance and authenticity in a hyper-digitized world. Features: Anasisant, Robert Rich, Thierry Gauthier, FernLodge, Downscope, Lars Bröndum, Fastus, Oubys, Sonologyst, Pharmakustik, Mario Lino Stancati, Simon Balestrazzi, and VÄäristymä. Ltd x 150 copies in a matt digipak. |
VARIOUS ARTISTS - 'Codex Of Pleasure And Pain - A Sonic Tribute to Clive Barker's Hellraiser' CD (Eighth Tower Records / Unexplained Sounds) - £12
"Codex Of Pleasure And Pain" is a dark sonic journey inspired by one of the most iconic and disturbing visions in modern horror cinema. Drawing from the imagery, themes, and atmosphere of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser (1987), this compilation assembles 11 projects from the dark ambient, experimental, and post-industrial scenes to create an immersive experience that echoes the film's haunting exploration of pain, pleasure, and the limits of human sensation. The artists offer abstract, oblique responses to its aesthetic and philosophical implications. The compilation functions as a sonic codex, an aural grimoire of sorts, where each piece contributes to a broader cosmology of the Hellraiser universe. Features: 400 Lonely Things, Sonologyst + VÄäristymä, Paolo L. Bandera, Philippe Blache, Grey Frequency, Phoanøgramma, Kokum, Mario Lino Stancati, Nerthus, VÄäristymä, and Sílení. In Hellraiser, Clive Barker introduced a world in which reality fractures under the weight of forbidden desire. The puzzle box - the Lament Configuration - is both a gateway and a warning, opening a portal to a dimension ruled by the Cenobites, beings who transcend the binary of agony and ecstasy. The film challenged conventional horror, embedding philosophical and existential questions within its gore-soaked narrative. Ltd x 150 copies in a matt digipak. |
VARIOUS ARTISTS - 'Radiola' LP (Dead Mind Records) - £20
Between 1978 and 1984, Fluxus artist Willem de Ridder hosted a weekly radio show called De Radiola Improvisatie Salon. Listeners were invited to send in cassettes recorded at home and would get guaranteed airtime. Willem never listened to any of the tapes in advance. No censorship or personal taste were involved, just total artistic freedom. Long before social media existed, he understood that just providing a platform could ignite boundless creativity. Unknown home tapers and independent artists would share their freshly recorded bedroom experiments with the world and Radiola became a catalyst for the rising Dutch tape scene. When the show gained popularity, broadcasts became open to the public and people would visit the salon to submit their latest cassettes in person. Only a few boxes of the Radiola master cassettes survived and were archived by Marco van Dalfsen in 2022. "We went through hours and hours of material and eventually compiled this album. A few names might sound slightly familiar, but the goal was to unearth the most obscure hidden gems of Dutch home taping culture". The result is an eclectic mix of ambient, industrial, lo-fi weirdness and experimental music, offering a unique glimpse into a very specific, but still relevant piece of the past. Features: Hessel Veldman, Rob Terwiel, Arie van der Kooi, Arthur Berkhoff, Harry Teunisse, Ad van der Koog, Paul van der Velde, Eelco Tamminga, Lex Bruining, Hubert Kuipers, Ton Rückert, Lorenz Factor, Ronald 't Hart, Koen Timmermans, Hans van Edam, Peter Deijkers, Peter Kaars, and Simple Simon. Ltd x 200 copies. |

AWEN & MURDEROUS VISION - 'A Nature Out Of Season' CD + Sigil Deck (Live Bait Recording Foundation) - £17
Awen and Murderous Vision combined to produce an album of sinister industrial psychedelia, devastating dark ambient and wistful dark folk intention. A distillation of synthetic and practical sounds - the composite elements recognisable to the initiated, but together forming a distinct entity with a compelling presence of its own. Let it guide you on a journey between worlds and times. Special guest appearances by Larry Kerr (of Steel Hook Prostheses) on two tracks and C*nting Daughters on another. "A Nature Out Of Season" is a CD presented in a high gloss digisleeve with a professionally-printed deck of 10 specific sigil cards (each card corresponds to a track on the album), beautifully drawn and designed by artist Lot1113, and housed in a hand dyed / printed cloth pouch. |
BROTHERHOOD OF SLEEP - 'Devotional Hymns To A Brilliant Flaming Sun' CD (Winter-Light) - £11.50
The debut album by renowned Belgian artist Bart Piette's (NDE / Dead Man's Hill) project, Brotherhood Of Sleep.
"Devotional Hymns To A Brilliant Flaming Sun" is constructed of five lengthy Ritual Dark Ambient pieces employing powerful percussive elements and deep drones, traditional instruments, chants and invocations. Skillfully-crafted tracks, draw the listener to a point of deep focus and guide them on to the next path of the journey, culminating in an auditory gaze into infinity. "Energy directed through the opened mouths of the singing skulls, facilitated by mantra and multiplied several times by vocalisations through the mouths of other singing skulls, that are placed on stupas throughout the Temple". Mastered by Ronald Mariën (Stratosphere). Ltd x 300 copies in a 6-panel digisleeve with artwork by Abby Helasdottir (Gydja). |
ONASANDER - 'Dawn Metrics' CD (Winter-Light) - £11.50
A wonderful studio album by Italy's Onadander (Maurizio Landini), known for a wealth of excellent collaborations with Alphaxone, Empusae, Nimh, Ajna, Kloob, Gydja, and more. In remote and boundless galaxies, entire generations of Cantors have declaimed the heroic deeds of alien military castes with armour that reflected the light of unknown star dawns. Expect deep drones, crisp tech-edges and boundless dark space ambience. "A release that seems deeply inspired by fantasy and dystopian worlds.
This vision is masterfully translated into dense, low-frequency vibrations that slowly build an ominous atmosphere. Buzzing waves and layered textures further intensify the tension, shaping a soundscape that feels tormented and immersive. The result is pure Dark Ambient - deeply restrained yet profoundly evocative.
This masterpiece culminates in an apocalyptic experience, leaving a lasting impression. Onasander stands among the most striking projects in its genre to emerge in recent years." (Side-Line). Mastered by Ronald Mariën (Stratosphere). Ltd x 300 copies in a 6-panel digisleeve with artwork by Patricia Schoonenberg. |

MERZBOW - 'Animal Magnetism' 2 x LP (Urashima) - £32
A touchstone release from Merzbow's digital era! Originally released on CD in 2003 (Alien8, JP), "Animal Magnetism" now receives a long-overdue vinyl reissue (with bonus track). This is a work that remains firmly rooted in Merzbow's signature approach - dense layers of distortion, intense feedback, and electronic debris... but it also stands out for its sense of structure and variation, and the fact it's not impenetrable. A complex of textures, subtle melodic patterns and rhythmic shifts sit beneath the surface of majestic Japanoise.
Experimentism and heaviness, speed and inertia, chaos and control - this is not chaos for chaos's sake, but a carefully controlled burn. The deluxe double LP edition has been meticulously remastered by Lasse Marhaug and includes a previously unreleased bonus track, 'Quiet Comfort #2', which serves as both a continuation and a reflection, extending the album's themes.
"Animal Magnetism" is a reminder that noise can be complex, emotional, and even, beautiful.
Ltd x 299 copies, housed in a gatefold sleeve, the reissue replicates the original artwork, including Masami Akita's own photographs. |
EXTNDDNTWRK - 'Albus' 2 x LP (Fourth Dimension) - £25
EXTNDDNTWRK is the enduring solo project of Andrew Fearn (one half of SLEAFORD MODS). While akin to his role in his main group with respect to primarily working with electronic sounds, samples and rhythms, EXTNDDNTWRK is a far more mannered affair whose approach is concerned with atmospherics, occasional tempered beats perfect for a late night drive along a deserted motorway, near-ambient swerves into neo-minimalism, crisp melodies and moody sickness fever dreams. There's a strong soundtrack-ish angle to EXTNDDNTWRK's instrumentals that almost command cinematic accompaniment, but what is most striking is the sheer maturity and refinement to each of the nine songs that constitute "Albus". Together, they illustrate an artist clearly at the top of his game in a home studio setting as much as when he's working up a sweat on stage. Ltd x 500 copies on black vinyl, includes an insert featuring sleeve notes by Andrew Fearn. |
SERGIO ARMAROLI / DAVID TOOP - 'And I Entered Into Sleep' LP (Die Schachtel) - £23
David Toop is a pioneer in British experimental and improvised music: a sonic voyager who has continuously challenged the sources and materiality of sound through rigorously thoughtful performances, a vast catalogue of recordings, and a steady flow of highly influential texts. His first outing with Italy's radical composer, percussionist, vibraphonist, and multidisciplinary artist Sergio Armaroli has a sprawling sense of beauty and intimacy.
Featuring Armaroli on vibraphone and prepared vibraphone and Toop on electronics, "And I Entered Into Sleep" is a sonic journey into the unconscious between electronic and acoustic sounds. The pair weave a striking interior world of immersive psychological depth. Feeling almost subaquatic at times, like captured glimpses of rumbling, shadowy ecosystems lost within murky ambiences, before washing ashore in a series of pointillistic, highly detailed alien landscapes of the mind, each artist's markedly different sound-sources, and treatment of the subsequent material elements, dance in abstract grace, incorporating subtle nods to minimalism, free jazz, and musique concrète within its seamless total form of sparse texture and tone.
Ltd x 200 copies on 180g heavyweight vinyl, housed in a silkscreened cover and outer PVC sleeve, designed by Bruno Stucchi. |
KLEISTWAHR - 'The Battlefield Is Everywhere' CD (Fourth Dimension) - £11.50
On "The Battlefield Is Everywhere" (a perfect title for what's going on around us these days), in addition to the searing psychedelic churn Gary Mundy (Ramleh / Broken Flag boss) is a deft hand at delivering, there's the slow-burn volcanic rock assault of 'Let's Be Strangers' and the electronic bleep-addled mass of howls, demolition ball rhythm and cascading textures of 'Yet Still the Birds Sing' to contend with besides many other delights that pull the album in several directions. While it could be contended this music would be ideal for the aftermath of your next toxic 'shroom stew-serving dinner party, there's still room enough for some violent twitches towards an appetising dessert. Threaded throughout are signature features comprising organ groans, despairing vocals reaching from a scorched canyon, black hole guitars, abrasive textures and occasional rhythmic pulses. As always, this album sees Gary pushing Kleistwahr into new spaces only he has the tools to carve. Mastered by Sion Orgon. Ltd x 300 copies in a gatefold mini-LP style sleeve, based on the Broken Flag design featuring paintings by Michael Boul. |
RALF WEHOSWKY - 'C.D.' 2 x CD (Penultimate Press) - £15
Ralf Wehowsky (aka RLW) is one of the most respected practitioners of radical music of our day, and a founding member of the seminal German group P16.D4. The "C.D." project uses, on the one hand, a series of documentary recordings of contemporary witnesses (considerably sound-modified), and on the other, a set of melodic improvisations (MIDI files), improvised in the spirit of the impressions of terror, tension, claustrophobia and fear associated with the Colonia Dignidad - a German evangelical sect, which fled to Pinochet's Chile in 1961. CD 2 (Knochenstückchen) directly reflects this atmosphere. CD 1 (Reue?) on the other hand, is characterised by the contradictory breadth of the statements found after the dissolution of the sect: denial of atrocities to glorification of the C.D. by leaders. The MIDI files were played back with a variety of virtual instruments (piano, guitar, sax, turntable, lung machine, barrel organ, synths, etc.) in a multitude of modifications, so that the pieces from both discs each represent a closely interwoven overall composition. 6 panel digipak with suitably unsettling artwork. |
DARK AWAKE - 'Archemoros' CD (Dark Odyssey Records) - £11.50
Greek act Dark Awake have been exploring the hidden, subterranean currents of esotericism, occult philosophy and ancient lore for two decades. Their latest album, "Archemoros", presents a ritualistic and mystical atmosphere; an abolition of matter under the banner of cosmic Dark Ambient music. Within the wider universe we do not live in relation to anyone, we are undefined in our being continuity. Death will truly have no power over art. The power of the will directs the destiny. And so, in the perpetual cycle of life and death that defines the tragic fate of the human, a gloomy epilogue can unexpectedly lead to an auspicious prologue... Glossy digipak. |
KEMET / EMME YA - 'Ashes Of Divinity' CD (Zazen Sounds) - £12
"Ashes Of Divinity is an incredible split offering from Colombia's Emme Ya (Edgar Kerval) and Canada's Kemet (Mo Massaya, who also records as Sublimatio Mortis with Undirheimar). From the ashes, the phoenix awakens. From pain, divinity is born. The initiate walks between two shores, standing before eternity. As above, so below. Sound becomes fire, silence becomes flame. This is the mountain, the path, the illumination: a hymn of rebirth, an invocation beyond time. Ritualistic Dark Ambient in the vein of Lustmord and Arcana. Gatefold digisleeve. Already sold out from the label! |
MOLJEBKA PVLSE - 'An Expression Of A Poetry That Was Lost' LP (Zoharum) - £20
MOLJEBKA PVLSE - 'An Expression Of A Poetry That Was Lost' CD (Zoharum) - £11.50
Once again, the Swedish-German project invites their listeners into its musical world, intricately woven from subtle melodies, warm, delicate drone structures, and the sounds of exotic instruments, over which hangs an aura of the extraordinary, shimmering with particles of light, bathed in summer sunlight, evoking fragrances from the farthest corners of the globe. "An Expression Of A Poetry..." comprises two longer compositions where, alongside electronics, we hear live instruments and dark ambient moments give way to exotic sounds, reflective melodies, and a fleeting aura of mystery. This is another release showing that this band still has much to say. MOLJEBKA PVLSE recorded the material with a four-member lineup: founder Mathias Josefson (who also records as Skare, on electronics, production and mastering), with Kris Kuldkepp (bass guitar), Hara Alonso (piano), and Isabel Fogelklou (harp). 45 mins. CD: Ltd x 300 copies in a 6-panel digipak. LP: Ltd x 200 copies on pressed on 180g heavyweight black vinyl in a reverseboard sleeve, includes download card. |
SÁNDOR VÁLY - 'Prayer' LP (BlindBlindBlind) - £22
A beautifully deep and meditative choral / organ journey from Hungary's Sándor Vály, featuring Sheik Abdullah Al Zaili and Júlia Heéger. Egon Wellesz (1885-1974), the Austro-British musicologist, could well provide the motto for "Prayer". "Arabic music knows no concept of time. A single song or piece of music can last for hours. The listener is not actively involved in the performance, not concerned with the formal structure of the work, but is magically connected to the music, allowing it to take him or her away". The track 'O Vis Aeternitatis' was created with soprano Júlia Heéger, based on the responsory of the great western mystic Hildegard von Bingen, originally presented as a sound installation in the Church of St. Francis Trevi, Italy. The vocal tracks are transformed into a chorus with 10 second delays, doubling the layers at each round. The same doubling method was applied to 'Adhan', the Islamic call to prayer, which was performed by Sheikh Abdullah al Zaili, following the tradition of Arabic recitation. For both pieces, the result is a sustained sound mass, which could be interpreted as their essence.
The two tracks (44min), which feature Vály on sampler, organ, and wind instruments, have now found their place on this limited edition record, merging like palms in one. |
COLIN ANDREW SHEFFIELD - 'Serenade' LP CLEAR (Elevator Bath) - £22
Jagged audio collages which shift from blurry abstractions to choppy sound art to mournful plundered passages, always with the singular stylistic approach the composer has developed over the last 25+ years of activity.
In these dense new compositions, hidden details come into relief as loops develop and morph while elusive melodies emerge from the mist before vanishing into thin air.
With a DIY aesthetic at its heart, the characteristic looseness of these pieces could be attributed to Colin Andrew Sheffield's use of vintage sampling hardware, but the presence of imperfect loops and rough textures was also a conscious decision.
In bending found sounds to his will, creating a certain ambiance of open-ended intrigue, he describes a hazy landscape - flecked with distant clouds and obscure lights in the sky; a paean for the inexplicable.
"Strings swell up from the bottom of a dark pool of water, drones vibrate like the hull of a doomed cargo plane, the ghosts of ghosts walk in circles across sheet-metal... he conjures these scenes and more like them here" (Yellow Green Red). Ltd x 100 copies on clear vinyl in a reverseboard jacket with flood printing. Includes download code. |
