Andrew Ostler continues his artistic evolution towards choral beauty, orchestral textures, ambient drones and low woodwind, into the realms of Jóhann Jóhannsson, Arvo Pärt or Stars Of The Lid.

Building on the string arrangements of his previous LP "Dots On A Disk Of Snow", and taking a heavy dose of sax drone from an earlier album still, this record also adds a full choir, taking the music to another level of spiritual intensity.

"This is music of transcendence, and perhaps transformation... A glimpse of something profound: not merely music, but a reflection of the sublime itself - blind, unknowable, and utterly captivating" (Chain D.L.K.).

On the first three compositions the drones are, for the most part, relatively gentle, while chant-like choral arrangements drift and weave around and above them. 'Affirmation' is quietly confident, with a surge of intensity around the midpoint; 'Confession' is perhaps more tentative, the shifting canon of the voices threatened by a distant storm of distorted synth shredding; 'Adoration' restores the straightforward choral beauty, building to an unashamed cadence.

The immense final track 'Meditation' is a quite different affair. Here the drones are more intense slabs, the choir is more demonstrative in its emotion, and the ultimate climax the more devastating for it. The journey is longer, but the rewards are greater for the committed.

Originally released on Andrew Ostler's own Expert Sleepers label on limited edition blue vinyl last year, Cold Spring are very proud to press this gem onto CD for the first time.

Two legendary titans of the extreme metal scene - IGGOR CAVALERA (Cavalera Conspiracy / Petbrick / founding member of Sepultura) and SHANE EMBURY (Napalm Death / Dark Sky Burial) - join forces for this unique split of brooding dark ambient, industrial strength noise, and heavy synth-laden electronics, creating what feels like the lost soundtrack to some dystopian fever dream.

Setting the tone for this double-headed behemoth with creeping, cinematic dark ambience, IGGOR CAVALERA's side-long 'Neon Gods' unfolds into a brutal sonic nightmare. Equal measures of dread and anguish come together with the occasional reprieve of slow, pulsating drones and almost meditative waves of static. The crescendo of harsh industrial noise with heavy Death Industrial vocalisation is nothing short of pummelling.

SHANE EMBURY's 'Own Your Darkness' merges menacing, pitch-black dark ambient and hypnotic bass swells with celestial synth lines that subtly lurk around the peripheries. Rising and falling, ebbing and flowing - until finally the all-encompassing apocalyptic bleakness, the enveloping darkness, closes in around you.

"Iggor and I have been good friends for decades and this is a record very different for us both but amazing! A very interesting track to make, it was my first experiment with the Solar 42. An excellent synth for those eternal drones of despair and was assisted my long time colleague Russ Russell. As I journey ever onward in through my individuation it's imperative that I own my own darkness... hence the title. An experimental dive into aquatic and industrial rhythms, this is the original soundscape to the highly-successful, immersive installation "It's Always Ourselves We Find In The Sea" (premiere at The Saatchi Gallery) composed for 3D ambisonic sound by: MARTYN WARE (HEAVEN 17, B.E.F., ex-THE HUMAN LEAGUE), CHARLES STOOKE, and GABRIEL WARE.

Produced by Illustrious (Martyn Ware and Vince Clark of Erasure), with environmental and immersive design by Oscar Blustin and Anna Söderblom, the installation invites visitors into a contemplative space; a quiet, peaceful temple to water, within which the soundscape exists. Listeners enter and explore the space in their own time, letting the sounds wash over them, experiencing the stories and musical motifs as they build and gather then subside like the tide.

Taking a cue both from UNESCO's Ocean Literacy initiative and the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 14 - Life Below Water - "It's Always Ourselves We Find In The Sea" offers visitors an opportunity to consider their relationship with water, and to step back out into the world with an altered perspective on its value and cultural significance. The soundscape is a looping experience, divided into two parts:

Part One - A Call To Water: This section explores our human relationship with anthropomorphised Water - throughout the history of our species and all across the globe, humankind has petitioned the deities of the sky and the sea for the benediction of rain and for deliverance from natural disasters.

Part Two - The Water Circle: Water is crucial for all life on earth to exist and thrive. In this part, we witness the storm's deluge on the land, water cascading in streams, then rivers and finally to the sea. The beauty and mystery of the oceans culminates in the process of evaporation and the creation of clouds, which continue the eternal cycle of water.

SATØRI's mission to document the stupidity of our species continues with "Pillars of Salt" - a journey through grinding rhythms, dystopian soundscapes and a fascination into what lies beneath the surface.

"An aberrant signal. Data loss. Corrupted programming. Everything should be fine. But it isn't, is it? Everything is f**ked. Something has gotten into the system and is destroying it from within. This is humanity being consumed by the inability to think for itself. Ahead is the future. Just don't look back..."

Formed in the mid-80's, with previous releases on high-calibre labels such as Broken Flag, Cold Spring, Trident, Mindscan, and Tesco Organisation, SATØRI's sound comprises a mixture of harsh Industrial noise and power electronics with harder and heavier percussive beats than before. Their material provides a constant pervasive undercurrent of violence, the feeling of a planet on the verge of collapse and a reflection of the lack of humanity embedded in a culture based on greed and self-preservation.

Featuring guest vocalist Lorenzo Abattoir, the album was produced by Andy Swan (Khost, Final, Iroha, Tactical Pagan).

Limited tape from Norway's Abraxas Teratology. "Ephemeral Rift" is 40 minute gritty death industrial incantation in two parts (20+ mins apiece), exploring themes of eschatology, death and gnosticism. Ritualised ambience from the darkest earth. Recorded on a Tascam 4-track cassette recorder somewhere in space and time. Pro-duplicated tape with 6-panel fold out J-card.

AGNIVOLOK + NECROMISHKA - 'Animal God' CD (999 Cuts) - £12

The new album from legendary Neofolk / Dark Ambient from Agnivolok (aka Vera Agnivolok) - with lyrics inspired by magical realism, mythology and folklore. Five years in the making, this album is finally out, fusing the enchanted style of Vera's voice and guitar with dark atmospheres and soundscapes provided by Necromishka (Michael Zolotov of Kadaver + Tamar Singer of Zeresh / Cruel Wonders), in charge of electronics and production. "Direct Action", Alternative TV's first studio album since "Opposing Forces" (2015), presents six lengthy instrumental tracks (44 mins) - this extended CD version bolstered by a seventh, previously-unreleased track featuring the late Steve Carter - which steadily rip apart all expectations as they shed all allusions to rock music in favour of the kind of sonic mutilations that once helped 1979's classic (and Nurse With Wound list endorsed) "Vibing Up the Senile Man (Part One)" stumble into weird and wonderful shapes. "Direct Action" marries guttural electronics to experimental sounds, and through Mark Perry's long perfected mastery of pulling together disparate strands to create something entirely alchemical and invigorating delivers a unique stamp to the ATV story. Edge Of Decay is the brainchild of Olli Tanskanen (Vigilantism). "Polttomerkki" ('brand' or 'stigma' in English) is filled with heavy, mangled electronics. Demented screeches, obscure electronics and sounds that pierce through your skull. Real Harsh Noise chaos from the well-respected Finnish artist known for releases on Aussaat, Freak Animal, Phage Tapes, 4iB Records, and Nil By Mouth. "In 40 minutes, you will get stigmatized by Olli... a messed up mind of all kinds of intrusive noises. It's not the harsh noise with cutups and sudden movements; the music is more organised. When there is a certain movement, Olli provides time for that sound to evolve, interact with other sounds, and become part of a larger thing. HORNORKESTERET - 'Dans Fra Dalstrøka' LP (Panot) - £23

On the new studio album from Norway's Hornorkesteret, their signature reindeer antler and moose skull instruments are joined by bass and mandolin, with field recordings, langeleik and bone flute. The compositions range from playful dance tunes to thoughtful meditations and powerful riff excursions, in an unrestricted and acoustic tonal landscape. 'Utrøst' is a minor voiced piece about a bewitched island. 'Krekling' (crowberry) is about the joy of finding berries. 'Gangar Grå' is inspired by myths of The Wild Hunt, and 'Sommerbeite' is a declaration of love from a shepherd boy to a mountain maid. On 'Dill Dall Holom', an angry shaman wakes up to protest the destruction of his forest world. HORNORKESTERET - 'Jehovas Vinter' LP (Panot) - £23

Norway's Hornorkesteret reinvent the songs of their forefathers with the compositions on "Jehovas Vinter", their first studio album despite being formed by Jonas Qvale in 1999. The group presents a dark, foggy and mystical folk music landscape with a collection of original tunes written by them. Elements of folk rock, Scandinavian traditional music and sinister "popular" music are heard through the interweaving string horn melodies (reindeer antlers and moose skull) and ritualistic drums (timpani, rototoms, bells, wood), with mandolin on the title track. "The melancholia and dissonance of Hornorkesteret makes me think of some kind of undead New Orleans marching band at a funeral ('Jehovas vinter'), while songs like 'Den sorgfulle sjaman' conjures images of a bunch of psychotic laplanders... IKON - 'Realm Of The Black Sun' CD (Dark Vinyl) - £12

European edition of IKON's 8th studio album - their first in over 10 years - with a title that refers to the most recent solar eclipse. A vinyl edition was released 2024 by Australian label Nile Records (200 copies only), but this CD edition includes 3 extra tracks. 13 songs recorded in 2023-24 in Australia, Belgium, Germany, United States, and the honour of recording a track in the King's Chamber in Cairo, Egypt in early 2023 before sunrise with no one else present. The project was completed in Melbourne, Australia with Chris McCarter (guitar, vocals, keyboards), Dino Molinaro (bass, also of Chiron), and Neil McKay (guitar, also of Autumn). This album features the classic Sangre De Muérdago sound in combination with the strong female vocals (sung in Portuguese) of Priscila (also in SINISTRO), sprinkled with trance-inducing passages. Standing in the attic... lost and found... "The Truth In Dark Corners" is a treasure. Restored by Martin Bowes from rediscovered live cassette recordings of the 1985 tours of Holland and the UK. This album Includes two never before released songs from Attrition's "Smiling, At The Hypogonder Club" period - 'In The Attic' and 'The Aftermath', plus a rare vocal version of the track 'The wrecking ground', and radically different earlier versions of many tracks from that album. "Smiling, At The Hypongonder Club" was Attrition's second album proper and was seen by many as a classic darkwave / industrial record. MEGAPTERA - 'Disease' CD (Ur Muzik) - £11.50

Megaptera have been a Death Industrial benchmark since their first recordings back in the early 1990s. The Swedish monster, led by mastermind Peter Nyström (Negru Voda), embodies the most disturbing and gruesome art there is. Alongside other legends, such as Archon Satani, In Slaughter Natives, or Atrax Morgue, the project has haunted our sheltered lives with their highly oppressive sound ever since. The album "Disease", originally released in 1996 by Art Konkret, is no exception to the rule. It is Death Industrial at its best - grim, terrifying and ghastly. "Emak Bakia" is a long out of print Muslimgauze masterpiece from 1994 (Concrete Productions). Even in the huge discography of the late Bryn Jones, "Emak Bakia" really stands out of albums from the period due its rather unique (acid house related) sound and short (by the standards of Muslimgauze) tracks. Like a cross-mix between Psychic TV (circa "Towards Thee Infinite Beat") and Muslimgauze's trademark percussion and ethno-ambient sound. 40 mins. Recorded at RMB Studios, London. Second edition. MUSLIMGAUZE - 'Uzi' CD (Other Voices Records) - £13

Muslimgauze's gem 'Uzi' from 1989, originally released by Parade Amoureuse. Cinematic, minimal, noisy, hypnotic, and gloomy. Probably not so overtly Middle Eastern as his later works, though definitely bearing an influence. Backed by electric drones, percussion forms a living, breathing atmosphere of impending menace. This album was not included in VOD's "Chasing The Shadow Of Bryn Jones" 10LP boxset, making this a great artefact for collectors and the curious alike. Remastered and presented on CD for the first time since its original release. Ltd x 300 copies in a reverse board mini-LP sleeve, with printed inner sleeve and a fold-out poster insert.

MAURIZIO BIANCHI - '603... Annus Mundi' CD (Siren Records) - £13.50

This is the remastered CD edition of "603... Annus Mundi" by Maurizio Bianchi. M.B. played empty synthetic sounds intersected by annihilated noise waves. Originally released by Italian download label Sine3pm (2006) it is now presented for the first time on physical format. "When I decided to compose this work saturated with negativity, I was filled with apocalyptic thoughts and emotions, because inside me I was convinced that the end of this inconsistent system of things was very near. So, I prepared two sound carpets, permeated by saturated sounds and electronic modulations dripping with alienation and desperation. The result amazed me to such an extent that I decided to put a random and indefinite title, '603... Annus Mundi' with the three ellipses, almost as if not to indicate a precise date for the annihilation, but subject to various interpretations, at the discretion of the individual. Thus, the sense of empty frustration was brushed onto the canvas of emptiness, waiting for the end...". This CD edition has been beautifully remastered by Andrew Chalk (Ferial Confine, Organum, ORA, Mirror). ATRAX MORGUE - 'Death-Orgasm Connector' LP (Urashima) - £24

The first ever reissue of Atrax Morgue's seminal album "Death-Orgasm Connector", originally released in 2003 by Slaughter Productions. It encapsulates the raw essence of Marco Corbelli's power electronics, melding harsh noise with industrial undertones and dark synth-electronics, solidifying Atrax Morgue's place in the experimental music landscape. From the very first track, listeners are thrust into a visceral experience defined by Corbelli's staticky rasps and eerie sci-fi synth notes. Each subsequent composition unfurls like a chilling soundtrack to existential terrors, culminating in a bleak exploration of themes that echo throughout the album. With the tracks playing as a cohesive narrative, "Death-Orgasm Connector" is characterised by sparse arrangements and an evocative exploration of singular ideas. The standout title track showcases Corbelli's vocal prowess and synthesis reaching intense climaxes, punctuated by a jarring bass drum that cuts through the sonic murk. Tracks like 'A Nasty Trick' employ high-pitched drones, overlaid with Corbelli's unsettling laughter, painting a picture that is as disturbing as it is compelling. Alan Bloor has been recording as Knurl for thirty years now and remains one of the most consistent harsh noise artists in the field. He has released music on pretty much every vital noise label since the 90's, including Deadline Recordings, Self Abuse, Spite, Xerxes, Troniks, Alien8, Phage Tapes, New Forces, Oxen, Absurd Exposition, Rural Isolation Project, and many others. "Obtain By Sacrifice" is another solid entry in his vast discography, presenting seven tracks of amplified junk metal screech and, as Seymour Glass put it, "the saturated clang of pulverized metal grinding jagged holes into your neck like the most sarcastic tracheotomy lesson ever". "While I was working in welding shops I used to love the sound of the grinders and the radial arm saw as it ripped through metal. [...] I've always been influenced by the environments I've worked in. I've always loved the sounds of banging, scraping, grinding. [...] I used to think it would be great to form a band that could play as loud and fast as a grinder grinding metal. Among the flag-bearers of contemporary, genre-defining Industrial Noise and Power Electronics from Italy is Uncodified. Fronted by Corrado Altieri (Candor Chasma, New Processean Order, TH26), with an impressive list of releases on labels like Unrest and Old Europa Cafe, Uncodified has been enticing fanatics for more than 10 years. In many ways, the new full-length "Erased People" continues in the footsteps of previous releases with heavy synthwork dominating full-sounding and diverse song-structures that convey a feeling of oppression and exaltation felt in a crumbling, dissonant world. Altieri's very distinct style manages to combine the old and the new; there is definitely a trace of the synth-driven minimalism Atrax Morgue was praised for, but also a great deal of innovation and modern skill.
